Bomber split into a pair of snifters. The brew appears a dark mahogany color. When held to the light it shows ruby clarity and a finger of yellowish tan head sits atop. A full wall of patchy lace sticks on the glass.

The smell has some whiskey alcohol tang with dark fruit. Some vanila and caramel tones are present giving a sweet and smoothness to the nose. A bit of spicy almost insence-like character to it evolves as it warms.

The taste is tangy with alcohol and some fruit like raisin or plum. More sips reveal a layering of molasses, oak and vanilla with carmel and toffee toasty quality. It has a spiced barrel flavor almost like cedar or incense just like the aroma indicated. Sulfur and minerals come out more as it warms up.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest to lighter level of carbonation. There is some pleasant barrel charater but the tang keeps this back for me as not being as enjoyable as it could. The barrel flavoring dominates all other aspects mixed with alcohol. The base brew here is a complete mystery to me. If you like tangy whiskey, this might be a brew for you.

"BREWED 07 JUNE 2010"
"BOTTLED ON: 08 JUNE 2011"

Appearance: Could not get much head to form no matter how I poured it. This was disappointing as it made it look like a rather bland, flat beer. The color however was very a nice, almost iridescent brown/red making up for the lack of foam.

Smell: Amazing. Very strong cherry, sour fruit aromas along with vanilla from the bourbon plus some barley malt. It could easily pass as a Belgian sour ale that has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Taste: Also amazing. Flavors are consistent with the aromas, with the addition of a strong bite from the alcohol. There's a fair amount of maltyness, but it's not chocolatey. I've never had the regular LSD before, but this tastes like they started with a fairly rich red ale.

Mouthfeel: Very nice balance of thickness and high carbonation. The alcohol and tartness definitely sting a bit, but this is not a hot beer nor a terribly difficult one to drink. Though I did need to take a break halfway through due to its rich, tartness. (a slight minus for "drinkability")

Overall: Definitely one of the better bourbon barrel beers I've had. Surely this beer has slipped under the radar to most, given the small number of reviews. I was thoroughly impressed and would certainly rank it as the best non-stout, non-porter bourbon barrel brew I've come across. This technique seems to be hit-or-miss; New Old Lompoc has definitely scored a HIT with this one! Only 'downside' is that the flavors and alcohol are intense, so you will either want to pace yourself or share your 22.

22oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pour a dark brown with a small brown head that fades to near nothing and leaves no lacing on the glass.

S: The nose is very odd. A bit of a funky aroma jumps out first followed by a bit of cherry, vanilla, coconut, and some dark fruits like figs.

T: The taste has a good amount of cocoa and vanilla with a bit of a funky brett style finish. It's actually a lot better than I thought it would be after smelling it.

M: The feel is on the lighter side of medium with some big bubbles in the carbonation. Pretty much what I expected after the pour and not the best aspect of the beer.

O: While this isn't the best brew I've ever had it's not too bad. I wouldn't mind a bit more chocolate malt in the aromas and taste and a bit less of the funky stuff but it kind of sets it apart from other barrel aged style beers.

Thanks for sharing this one, Bobby.

A: The pour is a dark brown color with about a finger of off-white head.

S: Roasted malt is the first thing I pick up here, but it's quickly followed by various dark fruit notes and a mild tartness. The more I smell it the more raisins I get out of it. There's a mild metallic note, maybe some plums, too.

T: Definitely a lot of plum and raisin flavor to this. Decently roasty with a bit of vanilla and oak. Surprisingly not much bourbon on the flavor (or the aroma, come to think of it). A touch of chocolate and the same tartness, almost like green apple.

M: The body is medium and the carbonation is also medium.

O: The tartness and the metal did this one in. Just a weird beer all around.
