On tap at the brewpub.

The beer pours a milky yellow color with a large white head. The aroma is very heavy on the banana with some wheat mixed in. I don't get too much clove character in the aroma.

The flavor is also very heavy on the banana. There is also a lot of wheat in the flavor, but the clove is once again pretty much absent. The banana is very intense but it is very well done and doesn't taste artificial.

Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

On-tap at the brewpub, served in a standard pint glass.

NXNW's Bavarian Hefe shows a cling-peach yellow body with lots of yeast clouding it--just as a good Hefeweizen should. Not much head, and what little spittle-colored foam first appears dissipates within the first few minutes. Standard aroma for the style, but light on the cloves. Vanilla, lots of wheaty goodness, and traces of tropical fruits in the nose with a healthy dose of grain husks in the background.

Great flavor to this Hefe; not sure why it's gotten such low ratings. Granted, it's not quite up to Live Oak's standards, but few are within the style. Perhaps it's so overshadowed by its bigger Austin Bavarian brother? Anyway, NXNW's version tastes great, with lots of wheat and pale malts laying down a satisfying cracker note upon which lots of fruity bananas and other yeasty esters reside. A quick dash of white pepper and floral hops in the finish. Mouthfeel is thirst-quenchingly light and crisp, but doesn't ever feel watered down. All in all, a great interpretation of the style...tastes much better with food, but I've ordered this a few times now and have never been disappointed.

Appearance - a lemony, cloudy looking beer. Decent swath of foam across the top, reduces to a light ring before long.

Aroma - straight-forward hefe; a good, somewhat sweet banana/yeast presence.

Taste - brief soft flavor of wheat, followed quickly by lots of banana and clove. A light balance on the swallow per the hops. Clean finish.

Mouthfeel - smooth body with muted carbonation.

Drinkability - very nice summer quencher, for which I imagine there is much demand for in Austin.

Pours very dull, murky yellow, and doesn't look good really. Smell is mostly clove and then banana. Taste is decent, but spiced clove is the dominating flavor. I'm not big on hefeweizens, and this sampler was ok, but didn't really make me want a pint.

Tried this on tap tongiht at the brewery. Poured a wonderful full bodied looking wheat beer into a .5 liter glass.

I scented a good amount of nice wheat malt in this brew with some good fruit undertones as well. The same for the taste, as it was very well balanced among a variety of pleasant wheat and fruit flavors. This brew really shines with its mouthfeel. It is absolutely perfect for the style, as it's not heavy, but doesn't have the watery feel that some wheat beers tend to lean towards.

Besides their pale ale, this is my favorite brew NXNW brews. Very true to the Bavarian style, plenty of mouthfeel. Try it if you are in the Austin area.

I first have to say that this is one of those styles of beer for me that must be served as fresh as possible. For me it never seems to age well and on top of that, all the elements (bitterness, malt, esters, and yeasty flavors) have to be just right for me to enjoy it. What I'm saying is that I'm picky about my hefe. If fact, even knowing how good it can be I usually will pass it up for something like a pale ale rather than chance it. I ran accross this one while going through the samplers and this one was perfect for me. Fresh as could be(as it should be... it was made right there). Good banana esters comes through in both the aroma and the mouth. Hop bitterness is spot on for the style. While the head was thinner than what I'd expect from a wheat beer it didn't detract from the enjoyment of the beer and it stayed around all the way to the bottom (when I ordered a full pint). Appropriately light in body and refreshing as a hefe should be with adequate carbonation. The pint was served with a slice of lemon in the glass. I don't like lemons in my beer.. not even a hefe where it's generally expected... I just forgot to tell the bartender not to put one in there. I took it out apon serving and the flavors of the beer were strong enough that I didn't notice any lemon flavors so I was pleased with that. This would make a good session beer if you're up to it.

Appearance: Medium golden in color with light haziness, a decent white head, lots of broken lace, and modest carbonation.

Aroma: Spicy banana and clove aroma, wheat malt, yeast, bubblegum, slight phenol alcohol.

Taste: Tart wheat malt carries the taste throughout, with a metallic bitterness, which appears late in the taste, and carries beyond its end. Spicy cloves and ripe bananas are present, but subdued. The finish is a bit dry.

Mouth feel: A bit thin, with the slight carbonation a bit noticeable.

Drinkability/notes: Pleasant, but seems a bit understated for the style.

Appearance - Thick hazy pineapple juice color. No head, just a white ring. A little lace.

Smell - Huge, big, fat, ripe banana. Banana. Did I mention banana? Incredibly one dimensional nose, not bad though.

Taste - Banana (surprise), fruity and just the slightest sour wheat character.

Mouthfeel - Incredible. Thick, thick, thick full mouthfeel. Much like Live Oak Hefe. Low carbonation.

Drinkability - Nice. I could have had one or two more of these, but there were other beers to try! This is a solid, unique hefeweizen.

Served with a slice of lemon. Wow, this has got to be the cloudiest hefe I've ever seen. The color is light yellow, almost like lemonade. By the time the beer arrives there is almost no head. The aroma is typical of a hefe, a little light, but the distinct yeast smell is there. The flavor is a faithful example of the German style. The spicy clove taste is very good, and the overall flavor is full enough. This isn't the best I've had, but far from the worst. I also tried this with lemon for the first time and found it to be an interesting twist to a style that I already enjoy.
