On-tap at the Lion's Pride into a tulip. This beer is a strange hybrid of styles, best described as a Dark Wheat Saison. The waitress called it a Wheat Stout, but it's really nothing like a Stout.

A: Looks black from a distance, but glows a clear, deep russet brown hue. Persistent, fine tan head that settles into a ring. Minimal lace. Pretty nice.

S: Interesting, highly piquant mixture of spicy yeast, wheat and coffee roast. Very fresh and vibrant.

T: Less roasty than the nose, with medicinal phenols and dry, spicy yeast leading the way. A bit of coffee on the long, dry finish. Good, but a little less deep than I hoped for.

M: Medium body with light, soft carbonation. Ok.

O: I was really intrigued by the description of this beer, and I was hugely impressed by Oxbow's standard FPA Saison, but something about this one just didn't cohere. The roasted wheat was prominent enough to distract from everything else, and yet in the end was drowned out by the spicy, phenolic yeast - not the most complementary of combinations, sadly. Still, it was enjoyable and gets major points for originality.
