I was fortunate enough to come here on one of my last nights at home for Christmas break. I was pleasantly surprised a place like this was only about 20 minutes away from my home. The atmosphere has a "family" quality yet there is also a large bar/bar seating area which to me, means they know some people just go there to do their "business" to drink. The quality of the place is a bit odd - it is called "The Bavarian Lodge" and that is exactly what it looked like. The service was pretty good - the guy that helped us definitely knew about the beer and actually pronounced some of the harder names correctly which was refreshing. The selection was also great - one of the few places outside of Chicago (perhaps the only one) that had Jolly Pumpkin on tap, and many other great beers I have not seen on tap elsewhere. Very impressive. We didn't eat a full meal there, but had a couple appetizers. The pretzel things (forget the actual name) were flipping so good. We got another order after the first was gone. We also got a couple other appetizers which were equally as good. To be honest, I can't wait to go back there when I am home and order a full meal and have some more good beers. Would definitely go back here again in a heartbeat.

Great environment and German food about as close to overseas as you can find in Illinois. While the selection of beers wasn't overwhelmingly large, the quality was evident with no low quality brews. All of your typical German staples were there along with some other imports. What really makes this place special though, is their special casks that they frequently tap after aging various beers. Not only are these specials good beers to begin with, but their aging and tapping makes the final product one of a kind. Since their casks always rotate, you can expect to find something new every visit, I'll be back soon!
