Had this at the Lazy Dog restaurant tonight. Overall, enjoyed this more than most porters. A bit on the sweeter side versus roasty character I find common in many porters. Could see getting this one again.

Review not detailed on the specifics as I'm mostly relying on memory (thought it would be bad form to be jotting tasting notes during this birthday outing).

On-tap at Lazy Dog Cafe in Irvine

A: The pour is a nice dark brown color with a fluffy cream colored head on top and some mild lacing.

S: The nose is not overly robust, but does offer up some roasted malt, dark chocolate, and maybe a touch of coffee.

T: Like the nose, the flavor is pleasant, but not necessarily intense. The roast is prominent, but there's a pleasant sweetness and a bit of bitter chocolate on the finish.

M: Medium in body with a bit of a smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

D: Not a bad beer at all, and probably the best of the "house" beers on tap at Lazy Dog.

Here's a Lazy Dog "house brew" which I tried today with my BBQ Beef Sandwich. On to the beer:

As dark as a porter should be, capped by a billowy head and leaves very good lacing on the glass. The aroma is smoky with some molasses, and a bit of unsweetened chocolate. The taste is unique for a porter, but the aftertaste it provides knocks it down in enjoyement. Notes of smoked tobacco, unsweetened chocolate, and what seems to be a hint of bourbon whiskey. The aftertaste is odd and dry.

Fix the aftertaste to this porter and this would really be something. It started well, but couldn't maintain the momentum.

Update 6-15-09: No overly dry aftertaste. Better than I remember. Lemme bump up the score.

On-tap at the Lazy Dog Cafe, in Huntington Beach, CA, the menu said it was brewed by Bayhawk Ales, in Irvine, CA, for this location, so I'm adding it to their repertoire,

A: Pours black, with a medium tan head, which leaves excellent lacing, in a shaker pint glass.

S: Smells of roasted malts, coffee, and some bittersweet dark chocolate.

T: Lots of coffee and chocolate, but not too overbearing which could make it difficult to drink.

M: Smooth, succinct, easy to drink, goes down easy.

D: A good porter that I was surprised with when I ordered it, I didn't think it would be this good, a definite reorder, the next time I go to the Lazy Dog.
