appearance: dark brown. Like a cola, some ruby highlights. Pretty substantial tan head on the pour that hangs around pretty good.
smell: Sweet, rich dark fruit. The barrel treatment has added some nice vanilla and bourbon.
taste: A little drier than the nose and not as rich.
overall: Like it's non BA version, quite drinkable, alcohol well hidden. BA has improved this one. I'm probably ruined by Backwoods.

On tap at the 2014 Secret Stash Bash (Atlanta).

Large and durable head over an opaque and, I think, murky black body.

Aroma: uninviting, dank mess smells more like old red wine barrels were used rather than bourbon barrels. Improved a little with warming.

Flavor: hard to get past the aroma but here goes... Not bad. Not great but not bad. Still, not as expected and a bit too sweet. This is from a keg I saw getting delivered directly from the brewery earlier today, so there' s no way this should be bad beer. Cannot account for the bad aroma except to suspect the barrel.

Feel: medium body and carbonation.

22oz. bottle into a Cigar City snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a 1.5 finger cream colored head with great retention. Beer is a very dark, almost pitch black mahogany. Lacing is thick, layered, web-like and with excellent stick. A really outstanding looking beer.

Nose is orange chocolate, mint, brown sugar, and a slight tickle of booze. Very unexpected and a bit awkward. Not bad though.

Opens molasses, brown sugar and hazelnut. A slight bit of roast and booze in the middle with more brown sugar and nuttiness. Slightly boozy backbone but overall very sweet. Finishes lightly minty with molasses and anise. Sweet, syrupy aftertaste. Pretty good.

Medium to light bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth and a little prickly in the mouth and goes down aggressive. Finishes accented with a sharp, slightly lingering aftertaste. For a barrel-aged beer, I was hoping for a more substantial body.

Overall a pretty good beer but this one might as well not be barrel-aged. The barrel presence isn't very prominent and I don't think it added much to the beer at all. Slightly above average for the style.

22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 8.99. No bottle date but this was a late 2013 release. Served in a Monday Night snifter.

Pours opaque, ruddy chestnut with two and a half fingers of sandy head. The nice thick layer of foam retention leaves beautiful sheets of lace.

Aromas of woodsy vanilla, burnt caramel, mildly smoked/charred malts and faint cocoa powder.

Taste follows the nose. A good bit of vanilla barrel character throughout with notes of charred wood, caramel/toffee-like malts, bourbon, cocoa and vague smoke. Drinks smooth with no real alcohol burn. An enjoyably balanced blend of barrel and Scotch ale.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. It seems a little thin but can still be considered creamy. Barrel, caramel and charred wood aftertaste.

Far and away the best I've had from Monday Night. The base Drafty Kilt is probably my favorite they brew and the barrel treatment really kicks it up a notch. Nice depth of flavor make it worth checking out. Glad I picked up a few.

Poured into an Ikea snifter. Liquid is a dark mahogany - nearly black, with a really nice creamy brown head that leaves bits of lace on the way down.

Aroma is coffee, chocolate, wood. Definitely sweeter than the regular Drafty Kilt.

Taste follows the nose - super smooth. Nice barrel character - adds nice sweetness and alcohol burn without being too much of either. Charred malts add a good bitter complement to the bourbon sweetness.

Mouthfeel is super creamy in the best way possible, with just a moderate amount of carbonation. I would like it a little bit thicker though, but otherwise great.

Overall, really solid BBA scotch ale.
