What do Scotland and the American South have in common? An appreciation for good booze. But that doesn’t mean they always get along. We put our award-winning Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale in Kentucky bourbon barrels and let them duke it out in the cellar. Who won? You did. Oh, also we did. Again. A GABF Gold Meal. No big deal.

The chocolate, caramel, and roasted malts in Drafty Kilt complement the charred oak and vanilla notes in the bourbon barrels quite well. Notice we didn’t say “compliment.” Scotch and Bourbon still don’t send each other Christmas cards.

16 ounce can into a tulip snifter. Best by 11/3/23, had 2/5/24.

Pours a darker copper color, semi opaque, with a one and a half inch foamy head and a decent amount of foamy lacing. Aromas of malt, caramel, vanilla, some chocolate and oak, light bourbon, a little banana on the open. Smells a little smoky. Flavors of malt, caramel, some chocolate and vanilla, some oak, a little bourbon, some floral and herbal hop bitterness. Smooth, a lighter medium body, well carbonated.

The barrels are light and the feel is lighter for the style, but there’s an array of fairly distinct aromas and flavors that step this up a bit. Enjoyable.

skin of beige head. Aroma has chocolate, peat, bourbon, vanilla notes. Taste comes in sweet, more than you'd expect from the style. Chocolate and vanilla with some of the earthy peat flavors, mellowed by the barrel. Unexpectedly delicious

I am trying this beer off the tapper at the Lee Street location as part of a four sample flight. It poured a dark mahogany amber with khaki head that is leaving some lace. The scent had brilliant bourbon notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with semi sweet caramel malt base with peat, grain and bourbon presence. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a solid beer.

Not a bad scotch ale, but not the best. Plenty of dark malt, vanilla, roasted oak, and a mild barrel presence. The problem is it is a bit thinner and lighter bodied than I hoped. I feel that it could be stronger, especially in terms of alcohol presence for a barrel aged beer.

16 ounce pour - $9.50 at Woodstock Beer Market in Woodstock, Georgia.

Appearance: Served up a very dark amber-brown body with a slim, off-white head.

Smell: Toasted malts, toasty bourbon barrel notes a thin brushing of molasses and a faint, distant fruitiness.

Taste: Sweetish maltiness, predominately toasty, though with a small sliver of roast and molasses amidst the taste of brown sugar. Veers a bit towards some barrel tannins and a little inkling of heat. Modest herbal-toned, tea-like hops. A bit more barrel char bitlets on the fairly drying, warming finish.

Mouthfeel: Skosh over medium-bodied. Medium-light carbonation.

Overall: Not bad.

Dark brown body with light edges and a full tan head. Smells of cocoa, earth, oak forward barrel, and an emerging amount of peated earth. Taste more earthy and boozy, tootsie roll, cocoa and a hint of smoke to the waves of malt round out. Feel is malty, thick, cool, yet barrel backed, smooth with sneaky robustness

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours dark brown with an inch of off-white head. The nose is quite subtle. I was expected a bit more. Slight caramel, vanilla, and a touch of maple. The taste is much more flavorful that expected from the nose. Big notes of toffee, slight bourbon, vanilla, maple, brown sugar, figs, prunes, and raisins. A nice malty bread note. The mouthfeel is fairly light and the alcohol is not detectable at all. Overall, a smooth and tasty Scotch ale.

Look: Poured from a pint can. Beautiful rich clear mahogany with a nice head.
Smell and Taste: Malty, Bourbon Goodness. Just like the regular Drafty Kilt but better.
Feel: 8.5% ABV is nice, then add a pint can is one hell of an improvement.
Overall: I see many more in my future.

Pours deep brown-black with beautiful burgundy highlights when placed in sunlight. Presentation is nice directly after the pour but rapidly diminishes into the blase as all the fluff dissipates. No surface cap, collar or surface cap evident. Both aroma and taste are boozy oak and dark malts with smokey peat hints. Mouthfeel does not allow for this to be a easy drinking beer. While slightly creamy it is grating on the tongue.
