A: Dark, small but potent head that fades in thing lacing around the rim. A few whisps linger in the center of the glass.

S: Not much here. Not bad, but it doesn't reveal much of the beer.

T: Kind of like the smell. Not a lot going on here. Definitely not unpleasant, but it certainly doesn't define itself in any way. Kinda of light on the malt. Not as watery as Guinness, but in that direction. Basically an amorphous dark beer that really wasn't what I expected from a Scotch Ale.

M: Creamy, a little bite.

O: Not bad, not great. Pretty underwhelming. But I'm certainly enjoying it with my dinner. Nothing to write home about but not bad to pair with dinner for a local brew.

EDIT: After looking at other reviewers, I'm wondering if mine is a little off. I'm finding zero smoke in the nose or the taste. Perhaps pounding too much Scotch has made me accustomed to it or this was just from an off bottle. Either way, I might try it again sometime as I just had a single this go around.

A dark brown color with a small tan head.

Smoky aroma, roasted malt.

Smoky, peaty taste. A little sweet caramel.

A little too much smoke, giving a bitter mouthfeel.

Growler fill from Moondog Growlers located in GA near the brewery. {lightly revised based on April 2013 trip to the brewery.}

Served in a snifter, this beer is a lovely ruby-brown color; crystal clear with fine highlights. Ample and durable tan hand (on tap).

The aroma is rather light and fruity compared to the full flavor. The latter features dark roasted malts and more spicy hops than I expected. The higher ABV is well-hidden; drinks like a 5.5% although the alcohol comes through in the nose after warming. Hints of smoke and roasted nuts. Brewery says the grain bill includes "cherrywood-smoked malt, chocolate malt, and roasted barley". Roasted grain, coffee, toffee and a trace of smoke in the aftertaste. No burnt flavors and almost no peat.

M: medium-full body; good carbonation; dry finish.

O: a very drinkable and rather dry Scotch Ale, "Americanized" with a healthy but well-proportioned dose of hops. Unique, perhaps due to the cherrywood-smoked malt.

Had this on tap in Blue Ridge. Really an excellent choice from these guys, the new facility is turning out better beer than when they were contracting. Great balance, excellent smell. The best I have tried from them. Reminds me a bit of Gaelic Ale from Highland Brewing Company.

Beautiful dark brew with purplish highlights. Small cream head with poor retention.

Sweet and fruity aroma.

Flavor follows: potent, fruity. Alcohol surprisingly shows. Nutty and sweet.

A touch hot for the ABV, but smooth and oily.

A surprisingly good Scotch ale.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. This beer has a big malt and grain aroma. The color is pure dark brown with a medium sized off-white head.
The flavor is very rich and smooth. I liked this beer quite a bit and thought it was more than just a scottish ale.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep amber. Small off white head. Thin collar and nothing else going on.

Smell - Lots of caramel. Some booze. Slightly fruity. A bit of butter.

Taste - Boozy. Caramel and some honey. A little abrasive. Not strikingly scotch, but I get some of the malt character.

Mouthfeel - Boozy with low carbonation. Medium body and a bit dry.

Overall - Eh. Not impressed. Just not a lot going on.

This is from memory - had this beer several weeks ago at Shorty's Pizza in Tucker GA.

Served on tap, from an outstanding selection of 6 beers on tap, with 5 of them at or near world class ranking. They include a 'Customer of the Month' special and for my visit this was a Sam Adams.

Just remembering that after being out for the night with a friend and ending up at Shorty's, this one beer just jump-started my taste buds. Rich, full-bodied with a great aftertaste.

I know this review is kind of weak from a technical standpoint, but I will update this after my next trip to Georgia and Shorty's Pizza.
