Notes/Commercial Description:

From Keg.

Has a dark brown color, with ruby red hints to it, and a froth, generous head.

Smells of slightly sour, fresh yeast, rustic bread malts and toffee hints, resulting into a slightly sweeter malt body, which overall still appears very earthy.

Tastes dryer than expected, with a decent bitterness, coating up the bread, toasted malts. Malts then turn even more present, introducing a caramelized aspect to the palate, still carried by a grainy bread foundation. Returning with with a slick aspect to it, the bitterness shines again during the finsih, supported by a well fitting carbonation, while there is almost no sweetness left, leading to a well balanced finish.

Poured from the bottle into a pils style glass. Bottled Sept 8th 2014, best before October 11th 2014.

A real gorgeous color of deep chestnut red, with excellent clarity. Head is a very faint light tan to cream color, slowly falls to a simple soaped but one finger puck and top. A big fluffy and light puck sits and settles nicely.

Very neutral and airy smelling bouquet if quite standard. Lots of dry yeast and baked brown bread crust. A good light matching caramel comes also afterward with a hint of light honey brown sugar sweetness. Very nice.

What a real interesting palate. Big hits of dry spiced bread. Large aftertaste of pine like hop and long winding bitterness, with a dusty character. Quenching slightly wet but malt forward in the mid palate. Extremely crisp and dry character with a hint of large hop that seems to grow as the aftertaste lingers for awhile.

I can truly say I have never had a beer like this, it's a lot of fun, and very enjoyable.

Appearance: reddish copper, with creamy head and good lacing

Aroma: very little aroma, but can pick up hints of toasty malt and slight noble hop presence

Taste: toasty malty flavor with rounded noble hop finish, sweetness at first but bitter finish, mostly lager like, but can pick up subtle hints of the apple tartness from the ale yeast

Mouthfeel: lager like consistency, crisp, smooth, biting carbonation, medium body

Overall Impression: A delicious ale-lager hybrid that exhibits lager like mouthfeel, clarity, and toastiness, but ale like yeast characteristics of fruit.

Third destination on my altbier odyssey through Dusseldorf. Visited on 4/11/2013. Served in a .2l stange. Pours a copper/amber hue with a creamy/frothy 1.5 inch off-white head. Nose is very subdued - some caramel notes and a hint of noble hops. Taste is a bit spicy and earthy (particularly in comparison with Uerige and Schlussel) with a lingering earthiness at the finish. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body, but closer to light, with a slightly watery consistency and an even carbonation. Overall, a good altbier, but not as enjoyable as the alts experienced at the prior two stops.

On-tap at Schumacher itself, on to the beer:

This is an amber orange colored beer with an inch thick head on top, good retention, and lacing which sticks around the glass. Its nose is bread crust and cracker notes, with a vague sweetness attached. A surprisingly complex alt when tasted; there's the usual bread crust, then it goes fruity for a brief moment. A little spicy hop enters. Then a little caramel, and finally a little orange. Its medium bodied, and is finished with a fruity and toffee filled aftertaste.

A fun alt to try, and what a way to finish day in Dusseldorf.
