Light copper color, clean, with a quite compact and creamy foam.
In the smell malt and caramel, then a light hop.
At the taste again a good maltiness, then a quite strong bitterness, but a bit more raw than in others Alt.
Anyway, as usual, great drinkability.
And the hop is well present in the aftertaste.

Third destination on my altbier odyssey through Dusseldorf. Visited on 4/11/2013. Served in a .2l stange. Pours a copper/amber hue with a creamy/frothy 1.5 inch off-white head. Nose is very subdued - some caramel notes and a hint of noble hops. Taste is a bit spicy and earthy (particularly in comparison with Uerige and Schlussel) with a lingering earthiness at the finish. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body, but closer to light, with a slightly watery consistency and an even carbonation. Overall, a good altbier, but not as enjoyable as the alts experienced at the prior two stops.

I had this at the brewpub in the Altstadt area. It was served throughout my meal in 0.3L glasses that replaced each empty one.
The beer is light rusty brown, clear looking, with generally 2 fingers of foam that last until the glass is empty. It smells muted, maybe a little more malty than hoppy, caramel malts being the main take-away.
It tastes nutty and malty, very nice and it paired well with the wild game dinners we were eating. Light bodied and good carbonation, very sessionable.

Appearance: reddish copper, with creamy head and good lacing
Aroma: very little aroma, but can pick up hints of toasty malt and slight noble hop presence
Taste: toasty malty flavor with rounded noble hop finish, sweetness at first but bitter finish, mostly lager like, but can pick up subtle hints of the apple tartness from the ale yeast
Mouthfeel: lager like consistency, crisp, smooth, biting carbonation, medium body
Overall Impression: A delicious ale-lager hybrid that exhibits lager like mouthfeel, clarity, and toastiness, but ale like yeast characteristics of fruit.

Thanks to Ethan for bringing this back fresh. Best served before May 21st, 2011. Obviously they want all the beer lovers who will be raptured away to get a taste of this before they go.
A - Dark copper/amber body with a white head that faded to a nice cap with some spots left on the sides.
S - Roasted grains and some sweetness, mostly honeyesque. Smells pretty straightfoward and easy to drink.
T - Toasted grain and some sweet, pale malts that go down clean with just the smallest bit of hops at the end. Really east to drink with nothing offensive.
M - Lighter side of medium, nice carbonation, very crisp and refreshing.
O - Really nice beer. I'm not a huge fan of the style but this is straightforward, simple, and good. Could drink this regularly.

1L swing-top, bottled 3/1/11, best before 4/1/11 (must be some volatile stuff!). Poured into a Willibecher, which is starting to become my favorite pint glass.
Clear, coppery amber. Tight and creamy head retains very well and laces beautifully.
The aroma has some toasted bread and light, earthy hops.
The flavor is light but interesting, with lots of Maillardy flavors of bread crusts and toast. Touch of malt sweetness and a kiss of spicy Noble hops, with a dry, lightly bitter finish. The light mouthfeel has fine, medium-low carbonation.
Definitely the lightest of the classic Altbiere from Düsseldorf, but also one of the best. Very drinkable and satisfying.

This is an amber orange colored beer with an inch thick head on top, good retention, and lacing which sticks around the glass. Its nose is bread crust and cracker notes, with a vague sweetness attached. A surprisingly complex alt when tasted; there's the usual bread crust, then it goes fruity for a brief moment. A little spicy hop enters. Then a little caramel, and finally a little orange. Its medium bodied, and is finished with a fruity and toffee filled aftertaste.
A fun alt to try, and what a way to finish day in Dusseldorf.

Alt beer should always been drunk as fresh as possible. No argument. This particular beer, from an absolutely colossal looking one litre swing top bottle was brewed this year on 0ctober 18th and has a best before date of November 18th.
Poured between an ISO tasting glass, a couple of altbier style glasses and a Duvel tulip this beer just looked superb. A beautiful red copper brown colour it has a lusty pure clear sparkle to it with a thin but lightly fluffy head which clings to the glass but it is thinnish at the centre. There's a rather firm almost dark chocolate whiff about it supported by a nutty background.
Medium bodied at most with a carbonic quality when first in the mouth this is firm, clean and almost delicate.The malt quality is both integrated yet detectable on its own with malt and some fruit at the core surrounded by a firm but restrained bitter edge. Quite beautiful really.
Not for those weaned only on DIPA or Imperial IPA. A beer for the connoisseur.

1L swing-top generously procured by Ethan on his recent Düsseldorf jaunt. Served in a Hill Farmstead tulip. Best before May 21st, 2011 - love the aggressive freshness dating.
A - A finger of tan-tinged foam settles to a thin cap and thicker collar, leaving behind splotchy patches of lace. Transparent coppery-amber-brown body.
S - Toasted grains, barley, kiss of pale malt and honey, faint nut character.
T - Taste is a nice mix of cereal grains and malt sweetness, with perhaps a hint of hazelnut. Very clean finish, with light hop bitterness.
M - Crisp, clean medium-light body, and medium carbonation. Chewy texture that is a bit like undercooked bread.
D - The 1L serving size was greatly appreciated, as this is an excellent session offering. I'd love to be in a beer garden in Düsseldorf getting continuous refills of this one throughout the day. Low alcohol, pleasant flavor and texture, and minimal aftertaste all contribute to making this really easy to drink.

1L swing-top from Ethan, fresh from the brewery! Poured into Bruery tulip.
A - Pours a reddish copper color, white frothy head, thin cap, and a nice thick collar. Very nice-looking beer, no doubt.
S - Huge roasted malts, slight sweetness, grain. Very straight forward, yet very enjoyable.
T - Roasted malts, nice touch of sweetness, grain. The roast is complimented by the sweetness in the malts. The grainy finish is wonderful as well. Not complex, but it's not really meant to be.
M - Light, smooth and refreshing, good carbonation.
O - Very well done Alt. Very easy to drink and I went back a couple of times to get another pour. I can imagine drinking this one a hot day in Düsseldorf, just chillin'. Recommend!

I've read that this is all light munich malt with hallertau hersbrucker hops.
A: Copper with an off-white head, good retention, incredible lace.
S: Light sulfur, steelie mineral, floral, sourdough rye bread.
T: Really well-hopped for an Alt, very floral & steelie, light mineral, toasted nuts and bread crust, hint of sponge toffee, slight hint of grainy sourness, solid bitterness.
M: Well-attenuated, moderate body has a crisp finish (with a hint of tartness).
D/O: New world brewers NEED to taste this, so they can see what an Alt is really about (not a sweet, syrupy mess).
