American Pale Lager |  6.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This lager harmoniously combines lager yeast fermentation and west coast IPA hops. Our India style Pale Lager is like a traditional IPA but with a twist - it’s fermented cold and aged for extended periods. A blend of classic American hops creates a huge tropical fruit and citrusy hop aroma. A dry finish accentuates the pleasant bitterness and hop profile. Hoponius Union uses locally grown dehulled spelt from MA.

Bottled June 26th, according to Julios website.

Pours a nice creamy fluffy white 2 finger head. Brilliant clear pale straw colored body.

Smells very good. Citrus, lemon, touch of garlic, tropical fruit, sulphury lager yeast smell (a bit much of this but it does let you know right away it's a lager yeast).

Tastes quite grainy and crisp, lemon, grapefruit, floral, dank juicy and oily hops. A good amount of sulphur again in the taste. Finish is lightly piney, grainy and sulphury.

Thin bodied, medium carbing, firmly bittered and powdery dry on the finish.

Overall this is a tasty beer. Very hoppy on the nose and pleasing. Fairly good flavors in the taste. The dry powdery finish and a good amount of sulphury smell and taste keep this from being an A+ beer. Very good beer and a great value.
$3 a pint bottle.

Golden in color with a white head. A very nice citrus hop aroma and plenty of floral notes to go with it. There are some pine notes to it as well as a light grass note. Very little in terms of malt. The palate is on the dry side with a lot of hop flavor to it. Citrus fruit and peel, lots of floral notes, pine, and a hint of grass. Just a bit of biscuit and cracker malt flavor. Very well done.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a slightly hazed, steadily carbonated, copper-golden coloring with a low profile, thin, off-white filmy coating. Aromas of resiny hops, with basil and hemp characteristics, as well as a slight peppering. Flavors are hop forward, with that heavy pepper/basil combo blasting the tastebuds. Light toasted backbone supports the hops presence, and the beer is light bodied and smooth in mouth. Great cling along the glass as you go. The aftertaste is light and bitter, with a slight floral highlight. Resiny, bitter finish, with the clean feel typical of a lager. Very tasty.

Every once in a while you pick a beer off a list with no idea what to expect. This was one of those times and boy did it pay off well. I had never heard of or tried an India Pale Lager, but I was intrigued.

A: Pours a clear gold with soft pillowy head.
S: Huge hop aromas - citrus, tropical fruits, apricot, resin running the show.

T: Stiff malt backbone. Beautifully balanced, crisp, drinkable. Very similar to an IPA in taste but actually a lager. Flavor follows- solid hop profile showing lots of citrus and pine notes.

M: Mild bitterness throughout. Body has enough weight to carry the hops without lending too much sweetness.

Very good beer, an entirely worthwhile east-cost hoppy brew.

Bottle poured fresh from brewey and cold into a glass. Golden with semi rushing bubbles a spotty off white legs. Smell strong citrus and floral accented by a bit if earthiness. Taste and feel impressive at first getting a pleasant grapefruit and line leading into a the lager profile which is a bit hard to explain but almost a toasted bread which probably is the yeast or spelt? Overall feel, depth are outstanding with a unique flavor profile. Welcome change from the regular apa/IPA

On tap at the armsby abbey.

A - Poured into a standard pint glass a crystal clear golden hue with a seamy one finger head that recedes to leave nice side lacing.

S - Nice hop notes up front. Definitely resembles a nice ipa with hop bitterness and a light malt sweetness.

T - Very nice lightly sweet bitter hops with a smooth malt finish. Quite bitter throughout.

M - Fairly nice mouthfeel. Bitter and dry but crisp and refreshing.

O - Overall I Enjoyed this beer. A very nice hoppy beer with a good crisp bitter finish.

Big thanks to celticfutbclub for this bottle...

A: Pours a nice translucent orange/yellow gold with one and a half fingers of pure white head. The foam settles fairly quickly, leaving a frothy ring along the edges of the glass. Good lacing as it drinks.

S: The nose is light malt, yeast, pine and orange citrus hops.

T: It starts out light, sweet, and refreshing with a good bit of light malt and mild citrus hops. As it moves to the middle I get more citrus, some pine, and a helping of yeasty. The finish is hoppy bitters and yeast.

M: Light bodied beer. It's super refreshing to start, get really flavorful in the middle, and finishes bitter and wet. Smooth from start to finish, with some lingering hops on the back end.

O: Very nice beer. This is something that I would drink more of if it was available in my area. A great summer beer, but also something that you'd want all year round. Solid.

From the chilled bottle into the big tumbler I see a clear, golden light amber colored lager with a decent but broken fluffy white head with healthy lacing. The aroma makes itself known quickly from a distance with a decidedly tart citrus hop and biscuit base. Very impressive and unlike any lager I've had the pleasure of knowing before (other than this same brew on tap). The flavor is such a pleasure with more of the same biscuit and citrus hop blend and maybe some rye grain and light grass ideas. It's peppery, tart and clean with a light but lively carbonation that offers an effervescent feel over a medium body. More grass and grapefruit lemon pours over the tongue with quite some bite, especially unheard of for a lager but as the label explains, this is simply a lagered IPA and the unique flavors are definitely successful and worth a try.

Brewed 9/24

Golden - mostly clear with a sticky, rocky white head. Plenty of visible carbonation with little bubbles clinging to the bottom of the glass. Really like the smell: grassy, weedy, lemony. I take a big easy swig and it’s very refreshing: earthy, crisp, and bitter, this can quench a thirst and a buzz. Nice finish though I could use a little more carbo. I love lagers so I’m lucky enough to live in the distro zone. Seek this one out.

1763rd Review on BA
Bottle to Speiglau Wheat Glass
500ML

Thanks to Jlindros and Rudzud for this one.

App- Into the glass, its that classic lager yellow with a bit of deep golds behind it. The small capped head receded fairly quickly but didnt leave a ton of bubbles behind it. Was a nice looking beer, just needed a bit more head and lace.

Smell- When I first smell this one its a bit more of a grainular hop note with a touch of pale hops. As it warmed a little bit more it takes on a bit more of a juicy hop note on the noise.

Taste- I enjoyed this beer. The crispness of the lager paired with a good dose of juicy and semi fruity pale malts and then go into a bit of a little bitter to balance out the flavors. Better when this was cold.

Mouth- A semi light body with a bit of a medium carbonation level behind it. A bit more hops on the residual flavor wouldve been nice but the lager notes with a bit of grain are really nice.

Drink- Im not a lager fan, but these hoppy lagers are really starting to do it for me.

Big thanks to surge1311 for sending this one as an extra in our trade! Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Cigar City pint glass.

A: Pours a hazy gold, with medium visible carbonation and a half-finger of white head.

S: Grassy and resin hops, light cracker and less pilsner malt aroma. Essentially no sulfur character.

T: Resin, grapefruit rind, and bit grassy hops, light pilsner and cracker malts. Citrus rind bitterness in the hang - significant but not overly bitter.

M: Light but smooth body, low carbonation sensation, and almost no alcohol.

O: Pretty darn tasty, and it certainly makes a good argument against the "lagers are tasteless" crowd. Still, it wouldn't necessarily be a go-to for me in the face of other choices - there are a lot of readily available IPAs that are just plain better.

Second pour of the night from a growler I bought on Saturday. Lugged the growler back to my house in a backpack for three miles, don't know how that might affect things.

a -- the body is brilliant. Kind of a hazy, golden orange color. Very little head, but really good lacing and retention of the said very little head.

s -- Boom, grapefruit. Piney west coasty hops. Lagery. Light biscuit and flower scents.

t -- much like the nose, it's a mouthful of grapefruit. Very citrusy. Very fresh. Fruity, dry and not astringent. Tastes beautiful and magical.

m -- medium carbonation. little spicy from hops. refreshing though.

o -- so, so good. again, wicked refreshing and very hoppy. Tastes like America -- awesome.

Cheers.

A- this looks your archetypical beer. Between gold and amber in color with a 2 finger white head on top, this is what everyone imagines when they hear the word beer.

S- a slight but not overwhelming nose of citrus and pine up front. Not much else. (i do have a bit of a head cold though)

T- the citrus isn't as strong here as in the nose. I pick up spicier earthier hops in the front and finish. Citrus is more toward the middle of the sip. The malt body keeps it balanced though it feels like more could have been done with it.

Mf- I could comfortably drink this all day. Light body and clean finish make for an incredibly drinkable beer.

I could drink this beer any time and be absolutely happy. A well done lager, which should be a model to others in the style.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Sierra Nevada IPA glass.

a: Clear dark gold with an inch and a half white heat which dissipated to rocky and then even surface foam and patterned lacing.

s: Spice and resin.

t: Pine and spice hops forward over a tasty medium malt base. Bitterness lingers in the mouth of an otherwise dry finish.

m: Light to moderate.

o: A very easy drinking IPL, tasty and refreshing. Eminently sippable and sessionable.

Poured into a pint glass. The color is light hazy straw. There is not much of a head on this one. Just a thin layer of bubbles.

Really nice unique aroma here. There is mango and melon prominent in the aroma. This is going to be good.

The melon notes are prominent in the flavor as well; that's how the beer starts. The finish has a bit of pine. There is just enough sweetness here to emphasize the melon, just enough piney bitterness to make this crisp and refreshing. I really like this flavor.

This is light to medium bodied. The carbonation is sharp. Overall this is very enjoyable. I will definitely be picking up more of this.

A - Hazy yeast filled golden body with a massive ice cream looking white head. Retention is killing me because I want to take a sip. Lots of lace down the glass.

S- Damn, west coast hops smelling on par wit most great IPAs but thesis an IPL. Tropical fruit and citrus blow up upon opening with notes of peach, mango, lemon and pineapple.

T- this is like sculpin lager to me. Fresh tropical fruits once again with a blend of peach, mango, orange and lemon zest. Very light malt and yeast presence backing up this hoppy lager.

MF- Creamy body with high carbonation stinging the palate. Somewhat silky and a clean bitterness on the palate.

Another satisfying jacks abby lager. Great west coast hop profile and very drinkable.

500mL bottle courtesy of JOSHMAN, 6 May 2013 bottling date.

A: Pours a cloudy golden color, almost like an IPA, with a finger of fluffy white head that quickly recedes to a thin bubbly layer. If I didn't know better, I'd guess this was an IPA from the appearance. Very nice looking, though. Plentiful lacing remains on the sides of the glass.

S: Sweet citrus covering up a slightly bready pale malt backbone. Here a little bit of the lager character emerges, but really it's the hops that are most prevalent. Lots of citrus and a little pine gives a crisp and sweet aroma to the beer.

T/M: A medium body laden with citrus character that dominates the palate, with underlying bread and cracker flavor to the malt. The finish is drying, again belying its lager roots, but also strong with bitter hop character. A perfect amount of carbonation makes this beer a joy to drink. Alcohol is not evident anywhere.

O: A very nice beer. The lager base is complemented quite well by the plentiful hopping, but it remains central to the character of this beer. A strongly bitter lager, to be sure, but retaining a lot of the drinkability of the style. Definitely a beer I'd be happy to have again at some point.

Bottle courtesy of cbeer88, thanks again!

Pours a bright and slightly hazy gold color with a huge white head.

Aromas are very nice. Notes of hard candies, sugary citrus, floral hop cones and crackers.

Taste is light and hoppy. Crackers, bread dough, and light creamy sweetness up front. Finish is snappy and crisp with bitter grapefruit, and mineral bitterness.

Mouthfeel is smooth with plenty of body and nice carbonation.

Overall, a very tasty lager. Very refreshing and super drinkable, would be a treat on a warm day.

Orange/gold and clear with a short, dense off-white cap. Thick lacing and great head retention. Fresh hop aroma, lots of citrus, grapefruit, pith, slight pineapple. Really well constructed, with citrus hops throughout but mild malt up front and tropical/spicy notes in the bitter finish. Moderate carbonation, on the creamy side while still retaining some crispness, nice texture. I really enjoyed this beer. Bright hops all the way through yet still refined and refreshing.

500ml bottle with no date.

Pours hazy gold with a dense white head of a half inch. A partial skim coat on the surface with dotted lacework throughout the glass.

Aromatics are a floral blend of tropical fruit and a trace of husky malt. Peach, mango, pear, and melons. Not leaping out of the glass as a great IIPA would but very nice for what it is.

Light to medium bodied with a crisp mouthfeel. Light and quaffable.

Bright, juicy, citrus-laden hops start the palate. Plenty of plump tropical goodness with barely a trace of bitterness. A bit pf pine is in the mix this time along with mangos, peachs, tangerines.

Finishes with a lingering smooth bitterness, tropical hops, and a trace of honey-drizzeled biscuits.

Great beer! Not to compare to others, but I look at this beer as sort of a Heady Topper Jr. Similar hopping and flavor, just not as big in any aspect.

Pours a nice bright gold with a big puffy head, a light cream color. Lots of lacing, very good retention, in case you're curious. The aroma is quite hoppy. Big on bright citrus with a little tropical fruit in the mix. Nice floral note, as well. Sugary, doughy malt underneath all of those hops. Taste is similar. Lots of hop flavor. It pretty much drinks like an IPA. It's just a bit cleaner for better and worse. The hops start with sweet floral and citrus flavors but get a bit bland in the finish. It's just not quite as juicy as I'd like. Nice dry finish, otherwise. Light mouthfeel with a little bit of hop oiliness. Very good beer.
