Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: mschofield on 08-07-2011

This lager harmoniously combines lager yeast fermentation and west coast IPA hops. Our India style Pale Lager is like a traditional IPA but with a twist - it’s fermented cold and aged for extended periods. A blend of classic American hops creates a huge tropical fruit and citrusy hop aroma. A dry finish accentuates the pleasant bitterness and hop profile. Hoponius Union uses locally grown dehulled spelt from MA.

Clear pale copper (SRM 9-12) with a slight, creamy white head that leaves a coating of lace below the lid of an HB stein.

Quick floral hops are replaced by grassy aromas and resin. Citrus zest leaves a light touch of lemon and orange, while peppery celery follows. Warmth brings out wet hay.

Quite bitter, yet somewhat balanced. Grapefruit and caramel work well together. A dry finish has modest bitterness and light, lingering effects.

Crisp and medium body with alcohol as expected. A satin texture is highlighted by fizzy carbonation.

This is a fine beer with which to decompress during a mild, sunny summer evening. (623 characters)

Bottle marked mfg1150607 at Lower Depths. Wow, really impressed, more so than with Mass Rising. Great aroma, bursting flavor and solid mouthfeel. Would definitely drink this often if available in my locale! (211 characters)

Look - golden color with a great lasting white head
Smell - citrus hop smell with a little toasty bread
Taste - incredible citrus herbal taste. I'm not sure what herbs are in there but it's very interesting and good.
Feel - medium body with lots of carbonation
Overall - I really like this beer! Great citrus pale lager! (322 characters)

Poured from a 12oz into a pint glass

Look: Hazy orange, half inch foamy head, a lil lacing

Smell: slight citrus. Herbal and grassy notes

Taste: Much like the smell. Not really getting the citrus, but still herbal and grassy. Finishes dry and bitter

Feel: Really smooth. Nice carbonation

Overall: Really enjoyable. I usually tend to go for juicier ipas but this ipl hit the spot. Just a really tasty well balanced beer. Feel like this one begs to be sessioned. Would definitely get this again (497 characters)

Poured into a narrow pint glass: color is opaque copper, somewhat dense looking, head is off white, fine bubbles with dense cover and lacing left on the glass.

Smell is extremely enticing: light malt toastiness quickly followed by the well balanced floral and fruity hops, there not overpowering but more sharp than a typical pale lager to warm you up for the sharper flavor.

Taste is less malty in terms of toastingess but a little sweeter than the aroma, light malt flavor (pilsen) is overtaken by the hop bitterness, hops seem less pronounced in terms of flavor than bittering quality. Subtle hop flavors include light citrus and grass.

Mouthfeel is definitely where this beer finds its India roots, lighter malt flavor of the pilsen malt is slightly overmatched by the hops (not in a bad way). Hops linger in a pleasant way on the tongue, not too drying and leaving just the right presence to identify this as more IPL than Kellerbier.

Overall, a great beer, seemingly simple in formulation but the subtleties of hop schedule, fermentation and aging come through in the finished product. (1,096 characters)

Has color more characteristic of an APA or IPA. Pours an orange-amber with a frothy white head. Smell is very muted to my nose, but then again that's the irony with IPLs as the coldet serving temp kinda defeats the purpose. Gains a nice fleshy mango aroma as it warms Grassy, citrusy, resiny hop taste. Gtapefruit, jackfruit, bitter melon, passionfruit. Definitely had a crisp, dry feel that accentuates citrus florals than any tropical sweetness. (451 characters)

330 Cl in a nonik pint glass
A:orange to straw gold, little to no head mild lacing, cloudy for a lager
S:good clean hop bitterness with hints of orange and miscellaneous citrus
T:clean, juicy and refreshing, I can personally attest that this is good on a summers day, it is a little bitter at first but any harshness is quick to dissipate, they call this 'wicked hoppy' and while for a lager that might be true for a beer in general it is certainly not the case
M:juicy, a little drying after a second or two but not very
O: Special thanks to mike constanzo for sending me this, I would definitely buy it again if I had it available to me, a very enjoyable very pleasant beer, like drinking juice only better (709 characters)

Had at the new "Cheers," Quincy Market, Boston, Mass., on draft into a faceted mug. Would say this "IPL" is a great example of what lagers can be, except it confirms I had (have) no idea what can be done with lagers. Whatever, find this beer. It may or may not open your eyes (like mine), but you will almost certainly enjoy the experience. (343 characters)

bottled 6/25/15 poured into snifter
This beer poured a orange-golden color with a moderate white head.. Amazing lace down the glass. Smell is of tropical fruit and citrus with a hint of cracker, breadiness. Taste has the fruitiness of the nose interplaying with the pilsener malt to balance out nicely. Feel is medium with moderate carb. Love me some hoppy lagers. (369 characters)

Appears translucent and golden with a single finger of head; like a crisp lager. Aroma is of sweet malt, honey, and a little citrus. Taste is initially hoppy with citrus. This is followed by a nice malt bready middle with lager notes. The finishes has some mild bitterness. (273 characters)

Had at Plan B Burger Bar in Springfield, MA.

The beer poured with an amber-orange appearance with a little bit of haze and a medium head. Wonderful aromas of citrus mixed with grassy and hop notes. The taste was this great balance of bittersweet flavors. Not as hoppy as an IPA with just the right combination of hops with citrus, like lemon and orange, and bready flavors. This flavoring was complimented by a crisp and refreshing mouthfeel, giving the drink a great body. Overall, this was a great discovery. (513 characters)

Not bad but I expected more. Dark golden color, light lacing. Apple juice up front, nice initial lemony hop snap. The aftertaste disappointed, leaving me with an unpleasant final impression. I really wanted to like this more. (229 characters)

-spiegelau ipa glass. ipl.

A: Hazy princeton orange coloring with a creamy, froth head of one inch, dirty bone white, with a solid retention rate that only adds to the lasting visual. Moderately paced glass consuming effervesce, lasting coverage, decent coverage rate on the vessel.

S: Nice wiff of dry pineapple-orange, good level of awareness. Some fresh green melon sneaks in along with wet citrusy notes. Crisp pale malts lets the hopping speak for itself with some tropical nature, very clean. Deep down some fresh apple-pear yeastiness comes to light. Good complexity for an ipl, duration is good, awareness is generous, whats not to like.

T: Citrus, semi-dry, followed by a grassy hopping. Solid level of bitterness, light flowery piney-orange, dry whole grains with a decent lingering after fade of citrus-grass on the swallow that is lightly dry and begs for the next sip. Crisp lager like flavor, generous american wet coast hop addition with a strong level of hoppiness well balanced with malt aspect.

M: Crisp and tight mouthful, bubbly and sharp, just like a good lager should be. Medium bodied with a touch of creamy nature.

O: Overall beautiful presentation with a well lasting capping only leads to a lasting impression. Lightly cloudy orange coloring with a crisp carbonation rate dances in the glass with healthy hop loads, cleanly brewed, with a lingering dry hopping afterwards that certainly won't dissappoint even the most stubborn of hop heads. Citrusy fade. Had this after a 90+ day mowing the lawn and this hit the spot perfectly, to bad he didn't bring along more friends, only had one. Clean lager brewed with american hop influence just as the label claims is spot on. 6.7% feels more mid 5ish. 6 pack worthy. Hop levels worthy of mid entry ipa status with a cleanly brewed background makes this a must try per style (pale lager). There is a lot to say about this beer, it starts with the the brewery's focus on one style (lagers). Nice to see other states outside pennsylvania focusing on this underappreciated german style and bringing some respectability with an american twist and influence. Rated as an american pale lager. (2,167 characters)

Pours light hazy orange with 2 fingers of off-white head, not much lacing on the glass. Strong tropical fruits on the nose, this one is a hopbomb no doubt. Huge tropical fruits and citrusy hoppy notes on palate, feels smooth and crisp and finishes dry with a pleasant amount of bitterness. A very enjoyable IPL, will look to have another one for sure! (351 characters)

Poured into a Haw River Farmhouse Ales teku glass. Bottleneck says 041615.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of sheer surface foam. Not-so-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Mild grassy hop aroma that's a bit fumy.

T- Definitely more on the earthy side as far as the hop profile's concerned. Nice mild bitterness with a bit of sweet malt flavor. Goes down so easy but is still very interesting due to the enhanced hoppiness. Slightly fruity aftertaste with a clean finish that resets the palate for more sips.

M- Crisp and somewhat sharp with medium carbonation and a lightish body.

O- I'm rating this higher than I would if this were an IPA because, if I'm reviewing to style, this is the best American Pale Lager I've ever had. (877 characters)

This beer is like liquid gold, almost literally. It pours an iridescent golden hue, reflecting both its status as a lager and its "India"-ness. It is crisp upon tasting but the body of the flavor is bitter with a strong floral-citrus end note.
The mouth-feel is smooth and straightforward, the smell reflective of the description of the taste.
It really is a fantastic beer, and perfect for someone who wants an IPA and the crispness of a lager at the same time. If you want something deeper, go IPA, and something lighter a session IPA will do. But this is definitely a flavor profile all its own. (598 characters)

Interesting brew. Smells like an IPA, though not crazy tropical fruit IPA. Taste a bit sweet and subdued. I could drink a bunch of these but not enough pop to warrant a higher rating. (183 characters)

I was caught completely off guard in finding this beer. Thankfully the place I went to brings stuff over from the east side of the state. Really excited to try this one.

Nice citrus tones. Really smooth beer. Hops bring all the suave and none of the abrasive character. Love it. I would drink this all day and all night. Great beer. (333 characters)

Poured from tap at home into my DFH glass. Jacks Abby just came to PA literally 2 weeks ago, so this beer is fresh, fresh, fresh.

A: A light to medium golden color with a one finger white head. I'm not getting any lingering glass lacing.

S: Wow, I mean wow. This is a lager? The nose is all tropical fruit. Mango, pineapple, peach and some citrus. Some baked bread sweetness is detected. The hops steal the nose.

T: The tropical fruits are amazing in this beer, so damn hoppy. Again, mango, peach, pineapple, some tart apple, slight citrus and some grass. I even get some bitterness in the middle here, prickly. The malt is grainy and bready smooth with some slight sweetness, but it really pokes through. Towards the finish is where this beer shines as a lager. The body turns creamy like a good lager, but still not really sweet. Finish eventually dries out to be crisp. I laughed that a reviewer said it was too malty...uh it is a lager. Anyway, fantastic beer, different in so many ways, it's genius.

F: Mouthfeel is prickly but smooth towards the end with a clean finish. No alcohol and it really leaves you mouth satisfied.

O: This is my first real foray into Jacks Abby products and I love it. They are known for their lagers and there is a reason for that. If you love hoppy beers and you've been looking for an outstanding hoppy lager, this is it! Fabulous beer. I can't wait to try their other stuff. (1,440 characters)

Somehow this does not resonate with me. Some people call it dank, but to me it's sorta skunk. fresh bottle< 1 month old. I'm rating it on the last bottle of the 6 pack, and it has not grown on me at all

It's piney to a fault, witch registers skunky and onions to my nose and palate. The mouth is very crisp and dry. nice

I liked Lashes Lager and Kiwi Rising quite a bit. Saxonater is great. This is missing for me (420 characters)

MFG 03/24/2015

Pours a clear gold crowned with a tight, creamy head. Juicy hop aroma...grapefruit, orange pulp, spicy grass, and leafy herbs over some cereal grain. Nose is more raw than the flavor. Taste brings that crunchy grain note a little closer to the surface, but it's all about the hops. Floral, citrusy, spicy, and leafy hops with some sweetness holding it together. Finish is oily and resinous. Medium-light feeling and delightfully crisp. A pretty damn good hop bomb of a lager. Love the switch to 12oz bottles too. (535 characters)

Beer is clear and bright amber in color with a soapy-hop oily looking white head. Smells like sweet citrus, fresh grains, apples, passionfruit, peppery, and leafy. Taste is along the same lines. Very juicy, dank hop cones... Also very drinkable and delightfully balanced. Yes. (277 characters)

Cold 12 oz. bottle, hard-poured into a room temperature nonic - a creamy, sticky, 2-finger head over hazy bright orange beer. Smell is all hops, pine trees and pineapples. T: a sturdy malt chassis overlaid with tropical fruit, grassy, slightly bitter hops. I don't get the citrus at all. F: creamy smooth, dry, modestly carbonated.
