American Pale Lager |  6.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This lager harmoniously combines lager yeast fermentation and west coast IPA hops. Our India style Pale Lager is like a traditional IPA but with a twist - it’s fermented cold and aged for extended periods. A blend of classic American hops creates a huge tropical fruit and citrusy hop aroma. A dry finish accentuates the pleasant bitterness and hop profile. Hoponius Union uses locally grown dehulled spelt from MA.

Pours a hazy golden straw body beneath the fluffy, pure white head that very patiently dissolves to leave a scattered sticky lacing.

Tremendous fresh citrus and pine hop aromas waft from the glass with compliments of sweet pineapple and grass.

The palate is equally hoppy and packed with pungent flavors of pine and sweet citrus hops. The hops are explosive on the palate and absolutely fantastic and the more I enjoy it the more the pine flavors come forward.

Medium in both body and carbonation with a sharp drying finish and ever present hops throughout.

Can't say I've ever had a beer quite like this. The flavor and aroma are tremendous.

Golden in color with a white head. A very nice citrus hop aroma and plenty of floral notes to go with it. There are some pine notes to it as well as a light grass note. Very little in terms of malt. The palate is on the dry side with a lot of hop flavor to it. Citrus fruit and peel, lots of floral notes, pine, and a hint of grass. Just a bit of biscuit and cracker malt flavor. Very well done.

Poured into a Spaten tumbler. A golden, orange color that is clear and full of tiny carbonation bubbles that lead to a huge four fingers of creamy and bright white head.

Smell is a tropical brightness and some bread or earth.

Taste is bright, sweet and delicious. Pine, mango, yellow grapefruit and some bread.

Mouth is a bit thin but okay for a lager. Carbonation is on the spritzy side and the finish is medium and on the dry side.

Overall I really enjoyed this, my only review of a Lager yet. The brewers up in the North East sure take brewing to a new level. Best Lager I've had.

Appearance: With a very white and fluffy two fingered head. Underneath is a clear and very golden beer.

Aroma: Lots of grapefruit notes and some piney bits in this lager. Light buttery biscuit.

Taste: Mostly on the citrus hoppy side quite alot of grapefruit and piney bits. Light dry mouthfeel with some crispness. Biscuit notes round it out.

Notes: It's drinkable and the citrus notes add a good touch. Cheers.

Finally a reason to use my half liter pilsner glass.

Light golden pour, terrifically clear. Obligatory fluffy white head on top.

Dank, citrusy hop aroma hits before the pour is done. Definitely some major American hopping going on in here. I can smell a resiny bouquet drifting somewhere between lemon zest and pine trees. Absolutely no input from the malt.

First sip is a hop explosion on my taste buds. Fresh and incredibly crisp, the hops take center stage. The hop flavor is sharp and bright - there is a lot of piney dankness going on here. I double check the description that reads "tropical" but there is nothing tropical about this, all pine trees like simcoe hops with a touch of citrus.

Then as I adjust to the bitterness I can tell what makes this an IPL and not an IPA - total lack of yeasty esters that I normally take for granted. Its like pulling aside a curtain and seeing the wizard of water behind. Normally I can't tell much about the water used to brew, but this beer has a mineral hardness to it with a slight touch of salt. It seems to stiffen up the hop bitterness and accentuate it.

Clean, delicious and refershing. Love the idea of an IPL. It's almost like performing without a safety next because there is no fruity ale yeast esters to cover up any inbalances. Great beer and would buy again.

Great clarity in the yellow hued brew. Light, fluffy, foamy, white head. Moderate lacing.

Centennial hopped. Citrus hits with a nice bang. Cantaloupe, pineapple, bready, ricey... yum.

Light and refreshing, yet unrefined, in a good way. Dry finish kicks you with a wallop of bitterness. Heavy carbonation sightly distracts from the high points of the brew. Citrus is sweet with pleasant, refreshing, bitterness.

Ah, yes. Perfect for IPA day.. I guess it is an IPL, but whose counting?? Refreshing for a hot summer day. A (near) perfect example of an IPL. Great style, becoming one of my favorite. Highly recommended.

From a 0.5l bottle, one of a 4-pack bought at Harringtons ($12.95). Seeing July out with a nice, hoppy lager...

Filled a nonic with a deep, rich, clear golden bier. Has plentiful carbo rising rapidly, with a creamy, fine off-white head up top. Lacing is decent as well. Aroma is quite rindy, along with some biscuity malt. Mouthfeel is solid, as Hoponius is a nice medium with only light prickle hitting the tongue.

Flavor has some grainy sweetness, though light. There's lots of citrus here, with a hint of tropicality, too. Mostly, though, it's piney, pithy, resiny hoppage hitting the palate. Has plenty of bitterness, but finishes dryly. Would personally like a tad more balancing sweetness, but this is solid nonetheless. Prosit!

Bottle pour at the bottle share hosted by Adam Fine Wine & Liquor held at Sophie’s Place in Redondo Beach, CA.

Pours a hazy light orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, citrus zest, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a fresh hop flavor and a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.
