American Pale Lager |  6.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This lager harmoniously combines lager yeast fermentation and west coast IPA hops. Our India style Pale Lager is like a traditional IPA but with a twist - it’s fermented cold and aged for extended periods. A blend of classic American hops creates a huge tropical fruit and citrusy hop aroma. A dry finish accentuates the pleasant bitterness and hop profile. Hoponius Union uses locally grown dehulled spelt from MA.

Bottled June 26th, according to Julios website.

Pours a nice creamy fluffy white 2 finger head. Brilliant clear pale straw colored body.

Smells very good. Citrus, lemon, touch of garlic, tropical fruit, sulphury lager yeast smell (a bit much of this but it does let you know right away it's a lager yeast).

Tastes quite grainy and crisp, lemon, grapefruit, floral, dank juicy and oily hops. A good amount of sulphur again in the taste. Finish is lightly piney, grainy and sulphury.

Thin bodied, medium carbing, firmly bittered and powdery dry on the finish.

Overall this is a tasty beer. Very hoppy on the nose and pleasing. Fairly good flavors in the taste. The dry powdery finish and a good amount of sulphury smell and taste keep this from being an A+ beer. Very good beer and a great value.
$3 a pint bottle.

Appearance: Pours a deep copper from a 500 ml bottle into my IPA glass. Two-finger white head that dissipates fairly quickly, decent lacing on the glass.

Smell: Citrus fruits, piney and resinous hops, with some earthy notes. Pick up some grapefruit, and overall a not overpowering aroma.

Taste: Somewhat hoppy but not overly saw, certainly on the lower threshold of IPA in my opinion. I can pick up the grapefruit that I sense in the aroma, and this is slightly sweet and not overly malty.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and smooth and not too bitter. Goes down very easily with the right amount of carbonation for the style. Very smooth with a nice creaminess.

Overall: This is a great beer by Jack's Abby. Interesting yet not overly complex and certainly one of their best, but everything they make is pretty solid. Definitely worth seeking out. Also a great brewery and great people, get out there if you can.

Appearance: The clear golden liquid arrives capped by a fluffy head that leaves copious amounts of lace behind

Smell: Citrusy and floral

Taste: The malt bill of this beer provides a base for the floral and citrusy hops to strut their stuff; grapefruit and tangerine flavors abound with just a slight oniony character; a bit of a lagery twang in the finish reminds you that this is not just another IPA, though I am not sure I would have picked up on it had I not known this was a lager

Mouthfeel: Medium body with the crisp carbonation often found in lagers of this genre

Overall: Just when I thought I had tried just about anything, along comes this twist on a lager that is just a superb drinker - lives up to the hype

Lots of hype around this brewery lately, definitely dig the bottles, emphasis on lagers, decent price, etc.

Pours pale orange, quite a bit of haze and dust in there. Big ol white head slowly settles to a finger or so, a little lace left.

Scent is, indeed, wicked hoppy. Lots of dank and earthy hops, grapefruit, lemon, some tropical, and a touch of cat pee for good measure.

Taste follows suit nicely - tropical fruit is more abundant with lots of peach, pineapple, citrus, lemon and all the good stuff, still a good amount of dank and earth. There is some toastiness in the finish but the lager part is pretty much lost here, this may as well be an IPA. But more well-rounded than the scent, and quite tasty I will admit.

Mouthfeel feels a little thin, but quite smooth and fine enough for the 4. Pretty easy drinking.

It is very enjoyable, but pretty much drinks like a good, tropical, danky IPA - not that there's anything wrong with that, but I do wish lager qualities were there more to spice things up.

Wooow. This beer is fantastic. You must drink this.

A: Clear, golden-yellow with a white, fizzy, soapy head. Sticky lace and a bit of retention.

S: Massive tropical, fruity, piney, resiny hops. Up there with some of the best IPA's I've put my nose to.

T: Incredibly smooth, delicious, and refreshing hops that contain flavors such as mango, fresh pineapple, and other crisp, sweet fruit. Lightly roasted, sweet malt is there in the finish. Well balanced but the hops shine and put this over the top.

M: Can't beat the fresh hop flavors, the smooth feel, and the refreshing qualities. Drinkability is absurd.

O: Clearly one of the best of the style but just a great beer overall. Well done Jack's Abby. This is superb!

500ml bottle served in a snifter.

pours a clear gold tone with a frothy 1 and 1/2" white head that fades at a moderate rate into a lasting cap; some lacing. of the aromatic hoppy bouquet offered by the nose, tropical and citrus hops stand out first and foremost for me; some secondary notes of grassy and pine hoppiness and a hint of malt.

flavor follows the aroma with a medley of hops - citric/tropical showcased with some more subtle pine and grassy characters, flanked by a subtle toasted/biscuity malt element. bitter hoppy bite persists through the finish. very tasty. medium bodied on the palate with average carbonation.

overall a slam dunk keeper in my book. flavorful and bold yet light enough that having a few in a row won't put you down for the count. such a drinkable brew - unquestionably one of the best lagers i've ever had.

500ml bottle served in a cervoise. Pours a semi-hazy straw gold with a bright white, creamy half inch head. Nose is clean, light and bright and expresses citrus zest, a slightly earthy character and a hint of tropical fruit. Taste consistent with nose with the addition of some hops bittering that lingers between quaffs. Mouthfeel is light and lively with a pleasant, palate cleansing acidity. Overall, I'm not sure if I can rate this beer to style as I think it is a bit more of an Americanized version of the style; nonetheless, this is an excellent and extremely drinkable brew. I see a trip to the brewery in my near future.

This is an awesome beer!!!

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Nice golden straw color with a big fat fluffy head. Nice lacing all the way. Pretty tight for a lager.

Smells of fresh hops. Very nice hop blend going on here. So fresh and clean smelling. Little citrus, pine amd grass.

Tastes awesome. This IPL is so refreshing. You get that fresh crisp taste with a blast of hops. What a delicious brew.

If I could find these easier, it would be my everyday beer. I just works on so many levels. It rings all levels on my palate, front to back.

huge thanks to lalaloveyou for this extra from a recent trade! Thanks Lauren!

reviewed from notes on 6/15/12.

poured into tulip glass.

Appearance: brilliant and clear yellow bodied beer with 2 fingers of white head.

Smell: Big hops profile. Grassy, herbal, and citrus, tropical fruit, floral and little bit of pine notes round out the nose.

Taste: Mild sweetness from malts and a little more prevanent hop profile, but nicely balanced. Malts are light by taste of biscuit, carmel, and saltine crackers. The hops are really grassy and citrusy. Pine and grapefruit linger in the back. Its got just a hint of yeast noted in the beer as well.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with a moderate carbonation. Super refreshing, super drinkable, and really crisp, yet remaining creamy. The hops leave a little bit of oily feel as well.

Overall: I will be seeking out this style during the warm weather months! I am really impressed by this East Coast Brewery. Great beer!

500mL bottle. Pours a hazy golden ornage color with an inch of thick, frothy head. Lots of lacing. Big hop aroma. Grassy and citrus hops. Slightly tropical as well; maybe mango. The taste is a bit more subdued than the aroma but its still hoppy. Grassy upfront with some citrus notes. Hints of the tropical fruits. Bitter, grassy finish. Orange peel aftertaste. Creamy, crisp mouthfeel. This tastes like a hopped up Lager. Overall, certainly worth having again.
