Ancient timelines talk of dark days, plagued by hardships and Kingdom demands. When hope was all but lost, a legend emerged. A plumber. With copper pipes and an uncanny wit, he battled fierce foes and saw to the brewery’s opening. Our Octoberfest is malty, smooth and exceedingly drinkable. It is perfect to celebrate and honor today’s legends. We use locally grown wheat from MA, Munich malt and noble hops.

Pours a golden color with orange hues, small but decent head, fades at a moderate pace, no lacing on my glass.

Smell is mostly sweet malt with a subtle hop character, nothing that grabs my nostrils attention.

Taste is surprisingly smooth and slick, the body is excellent with a nice creamy feel it to, carbonation is near perfect, taste is mostly malt but does has a decent hop balance in the aftertaste which helps to smooth it out, neither flavor is overwhelming but just the right amount, very easy drinking with a semi-dry finish that keeps you refreshed and coming back for more.

Ha on tap at the Corner Bar in Back Bay. Typical seasonal beer - Oktoberfest is everywhere it seems. Pours a great copper color with a decent head. Very malty and breast type of smell and the taste carrys over. Not hoppy at all. Pretty carbonated beer and tasted artificial to me- I wasn't overwhelmed with this one. I like this brewery a lot, but this one was just ok for me.

Copper in color with a nice head of near-white foam. Appropriately pretty Oktoberfest.

Earthy, bready, and mildly hoppy beer. A touch of floral and sweet notes as well.

Biscuit and a bit of sweetness combine with low to moderate bitterness, and just a touch of floral, grassy hops. Quite nice. Very drinkable.

Medium to near full in body, at least for the style. Moderate carbonation.

Very drinkable, tasty to-style beer.

Jack's Abby Brewing - Copper Legend, poured into a stein.

Look - Pours a clear filtered bubbly copper amber with a decent sized fizzy head that dissipates quickly and leaves sparse lacing.

Smell - Sour lager yeast, smooth sweet malt, some slight hints of roasted malt, and a touch of bitter Noble hops.

Taste - Creamy and malty with a nice hop bittering pine finish.

Mouthfeel - Rests hop bitter but wet/creamy. Low carbonation. Light to medium body. Slightly warm boozy but it's pleasing. Good drinkability.

Overall - I am not a huge fan of this style in general, but I appreciated what they did here, particularly with the hoppy finish. I am willing to admit that I am a huge fan of this brewery and will try anything they put out at least once. Would recommend this for fans of hops that want a seasonal treat, would also recommend for those into the style, though they might be put off by the interpretation of it.

A: copper color, off white pillowy 2 inch head a bit of lace left behind
S: rust/slight metallic, nutmeg,ginger
T: true to October brews, light and not aggressive on the alcohol. Slight nutmeg and smooth malt tones throughout and limited bitterness

Overall easy drinker, true to style and won't disappoint

On tap at the Old Toad in Rochester, NY.

Pours an unsurprising copper color, with a half inch head and minimal lacing.

Smells very earthy, with some sweet malty tones as well.

The taste upfront is bitter floral hops, with some grass as well. The back end is very malty and satisfying, with caramel, toast, and a good amount of sweetness.

Crisp mouthfeel, could be a little drier.

Not surprised that Jack's Abby nailed this style. One of the best American made versions.

Missed reviewing this last year but always up for Jacks Abby reviews, probably my favorite brewery overall from MA. On-tap at Dive Bar in Worcester.

A- Golden light amber pour into a pint glass. One finger foamy white head with decent retention. Small ring remains atop the beer but only a few spots of lace are deposited around the glass.

S- Smooth toasted malty aroma. Caramel, toasted nuts and some fruity raisin-like hints. Brown sugars also come to mind with a good lager yeasty base.

T- Smoothed out slight buttery malty caramel base. Toasted nuts, raisin, fresh cracked grains and light caramel sweets in a maltier overall flavor profile. Hops in the finish are grassy and spicy, Noble varieties.

MF- Creamy, silky texture in a body that has a light-moderately thick feel. Moderately high carbonation with a super creamy, smooth feel. Light bitterness in the finish.

Good malt character with a nice complimentary Noble hop finish as well as lager yeast. Good buttery, toasted caramel malt feel.

A - Arrived with about a finger's worth of head that quickly dissipated. The beer is a bold copper color with a mild haze to it. Some carbonation is visible in the glass.

S - I'm still working on identifying the distinctive smell/taste characteristic that I detect in German beers. This is the first American Oktoberfest that I've tried that has had it. Floral hop quality with sweet malts. Mostly caramel type.

T - Follows the nose. No surprises. It tastes quite authentic.

M - A Jack's Abby hallmark. This one doesn't quite rise to the level as others that I've had, but it is silky smooth and finishes clean, with just a little bit of flavor that lingers in the back of my mouth.

O - The first American Marzen I've had this year that gives me hope. Still not as good as the Germans make them, but not far off, and it tastes quite authentic.

Copper indeed. Bright orange around the edges with a dark copper center. A finger's worth of white bubbly head. Not much retention. Good amount of carbonation

Smells of slightly roasted grainy malt. Lager yeast. Caramel. Faint candied fruit aromas

Taste is yeasty with a big grainy malt bill. Wheat is evident. Hops are mild (noble variety) with floral notes

Feels crisp and smooth. Robust. Medium bodied

Overall pretty good. Not my favorite style but a standout marzen. Would get again if in the mood

Bottle from Andover liquors.
Pours a deep copper color with a huge white head that quickly dissipates to a cap. Smells of rich caramelized malts with lots of bready pilsner and subtle spicy floral hops for hints of balance. The flavor is rich sweet and malty with lots of melanoidin and hint of prunes and plum with a light earthy spicy hop flavor. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Nice Marzen! Not overly hoppy like some American versions, but rich and malty like better German versions. I enjoyed the hell out of this beer.

The beer pours a fiery caramel color, moving between amber and red tones. It pours with a lovely head of medium sized, lightly yellowed, slightly rocky bubbles that sit at a half finger’s width and slowly fizzle away. The head leaves a negligible lacing on the sides of the glass. In body the beer is lager-clean but darker, with a lazy stream of bubbles working to the top of the beer, and no particles present (just as there shouldn’t be in this style). On the nose, the beer smells spicy with a beautiful caramel malt blanket on the back of the smell. The caramel is layered and sweet, gracing the nose with just a touch of maple syrup and biscuit notes, and the hops are properly noble with a strong spice character, alongside fresh cut grass notes. The malt is the bigger player in the nose, however. On the tongue, the beer tastes mellow, with light bitters and sweetness which give way to a nice dry finish and only the slightest hint of acidity. In flavor, the beer tastes remarkably similar to several ESB’s I’ve had. The flavor begins as sweet caramel malt with a touch of apple juice, this moves into sweet bread, and then quickly to stale bread, and then bitter, herbal hops with just a touch of residual sweetness from the malt. Toffee notes also dance across the middle of the palate. The finish is dry, but is a nice blend of the malt and hops. In the mouth the beer feels medium in body, with a light, syrupy mouthfeel and softer carbonation that gives a quick bite and then caresses the tongue with velvet. The mouth is left dry except for a very faint trail of saliva, though it is by no means bone-dry. Overall this is a great beer to drink a lot of, it’s not too sweet, it’s not too bitter, and sits on the palate nicely with enough flavor to make you want another sip, but not enough to fill you up, etc… This is a good drinking beer, and would work very well in an Oktoberfest environment.

Marked Fall 2013, even though it's only August. Judging from other posts, this seems to be brand-spanking new production.

Pours deep copper--almost red. Plentiful cream-colored head that vanishes quickly. No noticeable lacing or visible carbonation.

Smells malty with candied orange peel notes. A hint of yeast comes through, but generally a clean bock-like smell.

Taste malty with slight bitterness (wheat?) upfront, some orange and spice notes follow, but fairly muted. Clean finish with only mildly bitter orange aftertaste that quickly dissipates.

Moderate to medium body, mild carbonation (at least, compared to the Samuel Adams version). Slight winy quality, showing off the alcohol, but not overwhelming (unsurprising at 5.7%)

Nicely rounded, pleasant representative of the style, but a bit short on malt and spice, compared to the original. Tastes clean, fresh and dry--and, given the blend of ingredients, likely to hold up under moderate aging. Stunning color, even for beers that are normally copper/orange/dark amber, immediately evoking the season (despite the fact that's it's still virtually middle of summer). Pleasant, sessionable beer that may win over more than a few cross-over drinkers, although the price is clearly a deterrent (the 4-pack costs nearly as much as a Samuel Adams 12-pack). Would drink more of it, budget permitting--and share with as many people as I can. Not as heavy or as flavorful as some other Marzen, but will do nicely for any Oktoberfest gathering.

Bought on sale at Four Seasons Liquors in Hadley Mass. Label indicates it's a Fall 2012 product, which may affect this review.

a: Translucent amber, finger thick white head dissipated quickly to a moderate surface foam film and moderate lacing.

s: Mild citrus.

t: Nicely balanced malt/hops, slightly sweetish, very easy drinking.

m; Light to moderate, heavy carbonation.

o: Though perhaps lighter than some Octoberfests, a good one to have while the weather is still warm. Refreshing and quite tasty, really hard to tell this is close to a year old.

Poured into a Harpoon Octoberfest mug.

Pouring it into the mug, it appears as an earthy orange with a humongous frothy head, light cream in color. Huge maltiness on the nose – pie crust and barley soup. Taste is reminiscent of burnt crackers, bread crust and porridge. This is a terrific showcase of the malts used. It’s rich, earthy and tastes of iron. The mouthfeel is wonderfully crisp. Jack’s Abby knows lagers. The depth is not huge, but the flavors that are there are wonderfully tied together and makes for a great Oktoberfest beer.

1/2 liter poured into a Sam Adams glass

One finger of foam which quickly settles down to a thin white cap. Faint lacings.

Fresh beer, faint citrus, malt and grains. Fresh is the predominant aroma.

Good taste, faint carbonation, light to light medium on the tongue. Clean finish, refreshing. Would like more malty sweetness taste.

A good , drinkable beer. I could have more than one. Very enjoyable but not best in class, but worthy of repeating.

Poured from the bottle into a goblet.

Appearance: The beer pours a clear amber color with a thick layer of off white head. The head fades quickly to a ring around the pour.

Smell: The overall smell is very mild. I'm getting a slightly sweet caramel malt note, but that's about it. Not particularly interesting.

Taste: Almost as mild as the smell. There is a fairly nice malt note, just a touch sweet and rather bready. The finish has a slight bitterness to it.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with tingly carbonation and a finish that is slightly dry.

Overall: This is a quite unremarkable beer. Nothing particularly interesting going on here. I don't need anymore.

This was an OK beer in my book. Easy drinker, nothing super special. Poured a deep gold/coppery color, nice head that lingered. Somewhat thick mouthfeel, maybe a touch of honey sweetness. A little hoppy and a little malty. Nothing extraordinary, but a very solid lager.

Thanks to cbeer88 for sending this one to me. Appearance is a deep clear orange with a razor thin layer white head. The aroma is malt forward with some significant sweetness present, notes of grapes, grains, and that festive autumn earthiness that is common for the style. The taste delivers every bit of the sweetness that the nose promised with notes of fruit and maple. This is countered by earthy grains and dry lager yeast. The mouthfeel is smooth with mellow carbonation. Overall, this leans a bit far on the sweet side of things, still enjoyable though.

Copper Legend opens with a largely grain-based aroma, full of toast, biscuit, Grape Nuts cereal, wet wheat, and hay. Slight touches of fruit esters – apricot, berry, orange – and pinches of brown sugar linger at the edges, difficult to notice. Even fainter are piney, citrusy notes from the hops. Obviously grains are dominant here, but even those aromas are relatively light, and one needs to place one’s nose fairly close to the beer to catch a whiff. As a whole, the aromas are nice, and feature just enough sugars to balance the grains, but the beer could use a bit more oomph to produce a stronger aroma.

On the tongue, the beer does continue to primarily feature grains, with wheat, toast crust, Grape Nuts cereal, yeasty dough, floury baguette, and even a bit of dark brown bread coming to the front. The sugars here are thankfully far more present than they were on the nose, adding good measures of orange, apricot, and berry fruits, as well as brown sugar and a touch of wildflower honey. The hops add a further citrusy note, as well as a pinch of pine, and gain a little strength in the latter part of the mouthful. In subsequent sips much of the finer nuance of the sugars is lost, and the beer comes across more like bread and hay. The aftertaste is mainly bread and hay, with a distinct bitterness from the piney hops, and lingers for a short time. Mouthfeel is medium-light to medium, and carbonation is medium to medium-high, fizzing up in the mouth.

Overall, this is a good beer, and certainly far better than standard Anheuser-Busch fare. But it does lack a certain amount of punch, and the sugars are low enough that they become easily lost under the grains – especially in subsequent sips. A better sampling of orange, berry, and apricot notes would have served this brew better, and helped to balance the affair.

A: Pours a clear copper color with golden highlights beneath a finger of off-white head. A long film lasted after the head faded, and a few streaks of lace were left down the glass.
S: Dry roasted grains, grain husks, bread crust, with a hint of earthy hops. Malty and dry smelling.
T: Follows the nose with dry grain notes, lightly sweet malts, earthy hops, hop spices, and a hint of citrus. The finish is sweet and earthy, and the aftertaste is drying and full of bread crust.
M: Medium body, sweet but not cloying, with bubbly carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel.
O: Straightforward and easy to drink. Another solid beer from a solid brewery. Thanks again SneezyAchew.

A - great copper color like the name suggests. Not a lot of head but ivenoticed that withthis glass.

S - nice biscuity malt smell with a good hop backdrop. Smells like a nice day in thecountryside but near a country bakery. Grassy.

T - Malty but not not a malt bomb. Hops on the backside.

M - good carbonation. Slightly heavy. Good hearty drink.

O - awesome local marzen. Super stoked to have access to this for years tocome. Cheers!

Thanks to gn0sis for this one. Served in a pilsner glass.

A - White foam settles to a solid cap and a few splotches of lace. Transparent copper-gold body with plenty of fast-moving bubbles visible.

S - Earthy and spicy hops, toasted grains, wheat, slightly floral, a little bit of toffee sweetness, some mildly fruity apple and grape skin notes.

T - The taste is sweeter, with more biscuit and honey-drizzled bread. There's some nebulous berry fruitiness, along with a kiss of floral and grassy hop. As you'd expect from the style it's malty but not cloying, with a kiss of hops. The finish lingers a bit longer than your typical festbier though.

M - Surprising heft for only 5% - verging on medium-full in body. Pleasant moderate-to-low carbonation, with a creamy and smooth texture that finishes a tad sticky. No alcohol presence.

D - Not totally what I was expecting from an Oktoberfest, but a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed the sweeter flavors in this one, although I could have stood for a little bit crisper feel. No problem drinking a half-liter on my own though.

Finishing up the 4-pack of 500mls, trying everything I can from this brewery.

Pours copper orange with a big ol off-white head, which eventually reduces to a half-finger and retains fine.

Smell is simple, clean, lagery. Straight up grainy, bready, caramel malt.

Taste is similar, maybe a bit too clean for an oktoberfest. A bit on the sweet side for the style. Caramel and buttery malts dominate, with some light toastiness on the finish.

Very smooth mouthfeel with just the right amount of carbonation. Good thickness to it.

Pretty decent, but a little simple and sweet for my tastes, reminds me of alot of other American oktoberfests, great malty mouthfeel is a highlight.

Pours orange with a small white foamy head. No lacing.

Smells of caramel with some earthy dirty aroma. A bit off.

Sweet caramel malts with a bit of apple and unfortunately a metallic dirty finish. Upfront flavors are ok, but the finish leaves a bit to be desired.

Thin bodied with good carbonation. I'd like more mouthfeel here.

Despite the words above I did enjoy drinking this beer. There were just little things in almost every aspect that made it average instead of good.

Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass

Appearance: 1/3 head, medium carbonation, golden brown in color, clear

Smell: toasted malt and grain

Taste: toasted malt, mineral, and earth

Mouthfeel: sweet with a good deal of earthiness, high carbonation, light bodied

Overall:A solid mineraly tasting lager. Good for the style, and if I want a marzen I would look for it. However, I will probably not rush to pick this one up again.
