Hazy, golden body with a giant fluffy marshmallow head. Nearly perfect!

Nose is clean, cut grapefruit. A bit restrained, compared to what I expected, but still very nice.

Flavor is outstanding! Once again, near perfection. Super light, almost non-existent, malt body crowned with a clean, crisp blast of citrus hops. Light sweetness, again I have to reference marshmallows. The hop flavors are mighty and intense, but not really overly bitter. I almost want to break out the advanced hop vocabulary for a technical description, but it's too cold and I'm too tired tonight. Taste is right up there with Heady Topper or Lawson's Double Kiwi.

Mouthfeel is slick, stripping, tart and zesty.

Overall, just a wonderful taste treat. Another top notch hop bomb from the East Coast. Nice work!

To think, I nearly avoided this brew because of the L word (lager) on the label. Glad I didn't let preconceptions guide me.

Bottle into pint glass
A: Pours a golden yellow with a one knuckle head. Head doesn’t dissipate. Decently cloudy and some excellent bubbles coming up from the bottom.
S: Hope, Lemon citrus and some small wheat notes.
T: A nice overall hops profile up front pulling into a full bodies lager. Somewhat dry and stale on the end.
M: lots of carbonation and some minor hop notes combined with a dry mouthful.
O: Interesting, definitely good. I couldn’t drink a ton but very enjoyable especially with food.

Bottled November 2012 (doesn't say exact date). Poured into a snifter.

A: Hazy yellow/orange color. Small white head. Beautiful lacing as I'm drinking it.
S: Citrus, grapefruit, mango, grassy smell.
T: Wow! Explosion of hops! Well balanced, fruity, bitter hops. Fresh and juicy tropical hops flavors (those New Zealand hops are magical, I swear). Sweet malts with a crisp, semi-dry finish.
M: Smooth mouthfeel. Never would've guessed this was a lager apart from the nice crisp finish.
O: World-class DIPL. Doubt I'll ever have one as tasty as this! In love with this beer and with Jack's Abby.

Kiwi Rising opens to an intensely hoppy nose, the 105 IBUs immediately apparent in the opening blast of bitter, citrusy goodness. The hops seem nicely balanced here, swerving perhaps slightly toward the more citrusy, bitter side of the scale, with pine resin, lemon, grapefruit rind, dandelion stem, and eucalyptus dominating, with smaller touches of pink grapefruit and sweet rose hips lurking in the background. There’s an equally strong layer of sugars to help counter the massive hops, with orange, apricot, and berry fruit esters joining brown sugar and an almost candi sugar-like tinge. Slight touches of toast crust and biscuit rest far beneath, difficult to locate against the hops and sugars. As a whole, the nose is excellent, bearing all of the aromas a good double IPA should have, and in balanced quantities, marking a very well-crafted beer.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a bitter hop blast that moves far beyond what the nose would lead the drinker to expect. Here the hops are quite bitter and plant-like, with dandelion stem and pine resin dominating, joined by lemon oil, grapefruit rind, eucalyptus, anise, and an almost menthol-like astringency. The effect is powerful enough that the beer almost feels like you’re simply biting into a fresh hop cone. Only touches of pink grapefruit and rose hips from the hops attempt to counter this bitterness; the rest is left up to the sugars. But here, even with the high 8.5% ABV, the sugars are largely overwhelmed. Yes, there are orange, berry, and apricot fruit esters, and touches of brown sugar, but they are easily overcome by hops, as are the faint touches of toast crust and brown sugar. The aftertaste is, unsurprisingly, more hops, searing the tongue and soft palate in a bitter, oily, citrusy coat. Mouthfeel is an oily, viscous medium to medium-high, and carbonation is medium to medium-high.

Overall, this is most certainly a powerful double IPA, and you won’t find many more hop flavors crammed into a single bottle of beer. This does, of course, mean that many casual drinkers will find the beer utterly unpalatable. But hopheads should rejoice in what is an excellently crafted hop profile. Unfortunately, the sugars and breads aren’t quite capable of keeping up with the massive lupulin blast, making the beer seem off-balanced. Worth trying, but be aware of what you’re getting into.

i try to support my local brewers and have enjoyed the Hoponious lager from Jack's but I was a bit disappointed with Kiwi.

Yes, the color, head and nose were exciting and the taste is spot on. What wasn't right for me was the carbonation. Thin almost flat even though I got it right form the brewery. After pouring a second glass it was totally flat.

Carbonation is an easy fix so I will still Give Kiwi Rising a Big Thumb's up
