Enjoyed on tap at the Armsby Abbey. This is a double IPL (Indian pale lager). Adding this as a dortmunder as their other hoppy offering was classified as such. This was brewed exclusively with New Zealand hops (I was told Pacific Jade and a few others).

A - Poured into a standard snifter a hazy golden orange with a very creamy half a finger of off white head that leaves rich side lacing and a nice creamy blanket.

S - Wow was the first feeling that coursed through my brain upon putting my nose to the snifter. Super fresh aroma of what is New Zealand hops. Smells almost like citra hops; no pine at all lots of citrus (grapefruit, orange, and tangerine). Very light crystal like malt sweetness mixed in as well. Wow.

T - Wow again. Is this really just New Zealand hops? Loads of fresh citrus on the tongue. The grapefruit rind is much more subtle, instead I get huge orange notes. Lots of orange rind but the biggest thing for me is it tastes almost like a Clementine. Reminds me of childhood, using my teeth to start peeling a Clementine. The bitterness and slight oil from the rind followed by the sweet citrus acidic mouthful of juice that would wash over my tongue. There is a very light bitterness at the finish. That lack of a super bitter finish, truely this is a Jack's Abby larger.

M - Smooth very creamy mild carbonation. This is crazy...8.5%?! Get the hell out of here with that. I'd maybe, maybe believe 5% but 8.5% no goddamn way. This is a snifter of orange juice!

O - Overall I like this beer so much I can't stand up from the bar in fear of being arrested for indecent exposure. What the hell guys. Why...why make a beer this good, this surprising. If lagering an IPA turns it into this symphony then all breweries should play these notes. I would drink this over any nondark beet any day of the week. This is truey something magical get this while it lasts everyone because as Cinderella said: "You don't know what you've got till its gone."

FINALLY.

A-Pours a hazy brilliant golden color. Head is thick and doughy. Head retains with intimidating stature. This puppy laces all over the place. Looks excellent, and I can even smell it from about 2 feet away...

S-This one is exquisite. Lager yeast lends a rich and buttery aroma. Just like buttered buns from a restaurant. Then, the (I think I am right) Nelson Sauvin hops just floor my senses. Nelson Sauvin may be the easiest hop aroma to detect. Unbelievably detailed tropical hoppiness. Pineapple, apricot, canteloupe and honeydew. Light mango and sweet citrus. Awesome.

T-Flavor matches the aroma in many aspects but It is a bit more vegetal and grassy. Just a tropical fruit cornucopia. Piña Colada. Light cookie malt and Lager yeastiness. The New Zealand hops are so damn exotic and fruity but it also has this crazy earthy and veggie aspect to it. Back to the point; this lager is phenomenal.

M-Booze hidden excellently. Moderate to high bitterness. Flavor lasts forever. Zipping carbonation. Lightly resinous.

O/D-The "Double India Pale Lager" is better than 90-95% of the DIPAs I have had. I love the Nelson Sauvin hop (still pretty certain this is the correct varietal) and I love how they utilized its flavors in this beer. Jack's Abby is the best brewery in MA and is up there with the best in the country in my opinion. Don't let their specific niche-brewing deter you; these lagers are unequivocally world class!

Bottle thanks to ILOVESTOUTS, served in a Hill Farmstead stem.

Pour: Hazy golden yellow. Really vibrant and almost glowing. Big two and a have finger fluffy, snow white head. Leaves tons of clean sticky lacing. Beautiful.

Smell: Big grapefruit, melon, and pine right off the bat. Some light breadyness, but barely. Not super big on the nose but really bright.

Taste: Woah. HUGE grapefruit, melons, and clean pine, followed by a deep citrus bitterness. Just bright all around. This beer is standout. A nice bread dough sweetness just supplements This is no where close to balance, and I love it.

Mouthfeel: It drinks like a Hill Farmstead DIPA. To me, that about the highest mouthfeel praise there is. Incredibly juicy, this beer approaches S&S5 levels of drinkability. Great bitterness, but in the raw fruit sense. Amazing.

Overall: This beer is better than nearly every DIPA I've ever had. Just a stellar beer in every regard. Jack's Abbey hit a grand slam here. I don't want this again, I NEED this again.

I'm with the reviewer right before mine...this beer exceeded my already high expectations going in. Phenomenal stuff!

A: Hazy, golden-yellow with a huge, bright white head that's at first bubbly and then settling into fluffy, pillowy foam leaving behind crazy lacing and good retention.

S: Explosion of NZ hops bringing aromas of bright, ripe citrus, pine, resin, a bit of booze, and overall a deluge of fresh, juicy, sticky hops straight to your nasal cavity.

T: Absolutely spot-on for the style. Massive, fresh, juicy hops bursting with flavor and a balance of sweet, sugary malt and booze to make every drop of this incredible. Seriously. Divine. I love the finish.

M: So incredibly smooth, sweet and delicious. Every sip is savored. Perfect carbonation. The lager backbone makes this beer a dream.

O: Top class Double IPA/L. The lager and NZ hop qualities put this beer over the top. Such a pleasure to drink. Thank you Jack's Abby!

Heard both good and not so good things about this brew so I was skeptical. Especially after loving BA Framinghammer....gotta say this is an absolutely exceptional beer. The aroma fills the room after pouring...a nice 1 inch white head....I'd never thought I'd use the description of 'grass' but that's a great descriptor....as well as a beautifully well balanced IPL...Great hop flavor with a delicious malt back bone....Thrilled that Jacks Abbey is here in NY! Well done!!

Bottled November 2012 (doesn't say exact date). Poured into a snifter.

A: Hazy yellow/orange color. Small white head. Beautiful lacing as I'm drinking it.
S: Citrus, grapefruit, mango, grassy smell.
T: Wow! Explosion of hops! Well balanced, fruity, bitter hops. Fresh and juicy tropical hops flavors (those New Zealand hops are magical, I swear). Sweet malts with a crisp, semi-dry finish.
M: Smooth mouthfeel. Never would've guessed this was a lager apart from the nice crisp finish.
O: World-class DIPL. Doubt I'll ever have one as tasty as this! In love with this beer and with Jack's Abby.

Wow. I will come right out and say it - this beer blew me away. I had pretty high expectations going in - and this surpassed them.

Poured a beautiful hazy golden color. Very bright and refreshing looking. Some sediment visible but barely.

Smells of delicious fresh hops, some alcohol, and citrus fruit. Very pungent and flowery. Almost a sweet-tartish smell to it as well.

Taste is incredible. Wow. Super fresh tasting - definitely a presence of pine and grapefruit. I pick up some bitter tea tastes as well. Truly complex and delicious. Awesome.

Mouth-feel is spot on for the style. Alcohol burn can be slightly detected but is pleasant.

Wow. I love this beer. This is up there with some of the more mainstream favorites such as Heady Topper and Pliny the Elder. Incredible beer. The fact that it is fermented as a lager adds a level of crispness that I find amazing.

Well done. Well, well done.

2012 batch. Growler straight from the source.

I am going to preface this review by recognizing my love/obsession of Kiwi hops...

That being said this beer is freaking awesome stuff.

Bright orange colored nice long lasting head. Clear not cloudy. You could read a newspaper through the glass.

Wonderful citrus aromas. Did some cut up grapefruits in the room?

Extremely bitter but non by any means over barring. Oranges Pineapples Limes Kiwi's and Grapefruits are present. Very drinkable for the high ABV. I took down a growler no problem. Quite the quaff.

Absolute homerun for JA. Better than the bottles last year which is saying a lot cause I liked last years batch a ton.

World class beer. No joke. Do this year round! PLEASE.
