Doppelbock |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
A dark strong interpretation of a double bock. Full bodied with a raisiny, dark fruit, slightly roasted and chewy malt character. Lagered for two months, a smooth malt character balances the high ABV of this strong beer.

Serving type: 16.9oz dark brown bottle. Served in a tall stein.
It pours a deep coppery amber color with a rather large foamy beige head. The lacing trickles and slides slowly down, leaving patches and webby lines behind.
Smells of plums, figs and raisins floating in dark rum mix with smells of brown bread and light whiffs of resinous, spicy hops.
The flavors are definitely malt forward. I’m thinking of rum-laced Figgy Pudding. Tastes of prunes and raisins in fresh baked bread are quite noticeable. The spicy hop bitterness does its job in keeping the malty sweetness in check, but eventually fades into a distant memory towards the end (in a good way).
At 9% ABV, Saxonator doesn’t even attempt to hide its boozy nature. You won’t be tricked with a sneaky alcoholic punch with this brew. Alcohol is present and accounted for in the smell, taste and aftertaste. It is exactly what you expect from a big, beefy Dopplebock.
What does surprise is the fluidity and gulpability of Saxonator. Looks are deceiving here. Some Dopplebocks can become a bit too thick-bodied and/or cloying in the mouthfeel. Not this one! Creamy, velvety, but very drinkable! Maybe too drinkable?

Deep reddish brown in colour with an inch of fine, medium beige foam. Good head retention. Malty aroma with a bit of alcohol, raisins and dried fruit, biscuit and toast, slight sugary character. Really nice flavour, balanced combination of aroma characteristics along with mild to moderate bitterness. Malty throughout with bready and biscuity notes, grain and dried fruit, alcohol in the finish. Full bodied with soft carbonation, smooth texture, mild warmth. I liked this quite a bit. Another solid beer from Jack's Abby -- they continue to impress me.

a: Semi dark chestnut brown with orange edges; poured with a medium sized fizzy head.

s: Fairly strong heat, stewed raisins, hints of chocolate, toffee, and nutty malts.

t: Lots of good things going on up front; sweet bread, toffee, raisins, cocoa. Ths sharp, dry, lingering heat is a bit of a drawback.

m: Yes this is a bigger doppel, but it still comes across as a bit heavy.

o: Plenty to like here. This is more densely flavored than a typical doppel. To tbe point that I think it comes on a bit too strong. Still, I'd gladly have another.

Half liter bottle served in pint glass. Beer is reddish brown in color with a moderate tan foam. Rich malt aroma typical of the style: sweet but powerful. Flavorwise I think this hits a bunch of really nice notes. You get the typical malt bomb of a dopelbock, but first you get the nutty roasted malt flavor of an American Nut Brown, and afterwards you get a pleasant hop bitterness. I can't believe this is only 25 IBUs. The alcohol (9%) plays off the bitterness really well and you get finish which isn't at all clean, but it is tasty. There's even a little bit of sweet dark chocolate in there. This is a rough, aggressive style, but Framingham's finest have made a totally worthwhile offering.

Note that the label clearly uses the Americanized (Saxonized?) spelling "Dopplebock".
