Doppelbock |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
A dark strong interpretation of a double bock. Full bodied with a raisiny, dark fruit, slightly roasted and chewy malt character. Lagered for two months, a smooth malt character balances the high ABV of this strong beer.

A: A dark brown pour with some dark red in it. Decent offwhite head that fades somewhat quickly. Good lacing.

S: Earthy toffee aroma. Some sweet caramel. Maybe a touch of brown sugar?

T: Wow, big earthy toffee and molasses mixture up front. Sweet, thick caramel takes over and carries out after that. No bitterness, no hint of alcohol, nothing. Just smooth and creamy decadence. As it warms I get just a hint of cocoa in there as well.

M: Perhaps the best feature of this beer (hard to believe since the taste is so good). It's like drinking silk. Super creamy and super smooth. Just slides over the tongue like pure luxury.

O: Damn, I thought they couldn't top Kiwi Rising but this is just amazing in a totally different way. Never had a doppelbock that even comes close to this beer. Very unique style too, again unlike any other beer I've had.

Appearance: orange brown in color, 3/4 inch head, hazy, high carbonation

Smell: deep caramel, alcohol, and deep dark fruit

Taste: deep caramel, alcohol, light roasted malt, and dark fruit

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, medium-high carbonation, sweet with slight bitterness

Overall: Good combination of sweet caramel with a touch of bitterness. Excellent value for the price. I will pick this up again even though there are others I prefer in the style.

16.9 oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a clear dark copper with an ample light cream head. Average amount of visible carbonation.

S: Initial aroma is dark fruits such as raisin or plum with a mix of roasted and sweet malts. Real fermented fruit sort of aroma going on here with that touch of booze in the backend.

T: Balanced and very well done dopplebock. Malt is quite rich giving you both roastiness and a carmel sweetness. Low hopping which is appropriate for the style. Hints of raisin, plum and chocolate but don't overwhelm just blend nicely with the malts. Alcohol is well hidden.

M: Smooth body with low carbonation. Has a nice creaminess giving it a full body. Remains quite easy drinking considering the ABV.

Overall this one is very true to the style and a great example of a finely crafted lager. All the flavors meld nicely together and deliver a solid beer.

Half liter bottle served in pint glass. Beer is reddish brown in color with a moderate tan foam. Rich malt aroma typical of the style: sweet but powerful. Flavorwise I think this hits a bunch of really nice notes. You get the typical malt bomb of a dopelbock, but first you get the nutty roasted malt flavor of an American Nut Brown, and afterwards you get a pleasant hop bitterness. I can't believe this is only 25 IBUs. The alcohol (9%) plays off the bitterness really well and you get finish which isn't at all clean, but it is tasty. There's even a little bit of sweet dark chocolate in there. This is a rough, aggressive style, but Framingham's finest have made a totally worthwhile offering.

Note that the label clearly uses the Americanized (Saxonized?) spelling "Dopplebock".

A - A deep, smoky red after the first pour. The foam quickly dissipates and you're left with a dark amber beer.

S - Full bodied aroma of raisins. As advertised, you can tell there's a lot of time behind this beer. 'Lagered for two months"... and it's obvious. Very nice.

T - Muted carbonation compliments the malt very well. Sweet and delicious.

M - Packs a punch while not being overwhelming. Lingers and hangs with you well after a sip.

O - Exactly what I was looking for to compliment a roasted potato and steak supper. The high ABV certainly sneaks up on you... very tasty beer.
