Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: jlindros on 01-15-2012

Deep golden in color, this low ABV lager balances Pilsner and Munich malt with an aromatic American hop aroma. This beer starts hoppy but finishes unexpectedly malty with very low bitterness. Impressively flavorful and drinkable for the lightest beer we brew. We dub this beer a "Session Lager," as we once again brew a lager in a beer style of its own. Uses local Soft Red Winter Wheat from Four Star Farms.

The closet comparison I got is Millstream's Schildbrau.

This is paler, though--a dark, filtered gold with a soapy white head. Smells of rounded, lightly nutty malt with a bit of citrus hops.

Tastes like it smells, crisp and punchy. Rounded, lightly nutty biscuit malts dominate, offset nicely by lightly floral American hops, finishing cleanly with zero esters and a light, lingering kiss of the hop.

Very well brewed, but I wish they had given us a little more.

Serving: Bottle into pint
Served: 14 October

Appearance: Pours a clear golden-rod yellow with strong orange hues. Good 1.5 finger head that dies down quickly but leaves some laing.

Smell: Light bready maltiness with some sweet citrus hoppiness.

Taste: Much like the smell- the beer's malt body is quite light and is definitely characteristic of a traditional lager- there's some of the 'edgy' characteristics giving it a distinctive crispness. The flavor, however, is much like a session IPA, meaning full floral and citrus hoppiness, which a slight bitter astringency. Finishes drier than a session IPA.

Feel: Crisp, light, and bubbly.

Overall: A pretty great beer, and one I certainly would enjoy again. However, given the availability of cheaper session IPAs, if I want a hoppy, low ABV beer, I'll probably reach for one of those over this, as I find the lager style adds little to no obvious complexity to the beer, as the lager subtleties are drowned out by the hops in this one.
