Big, Bold, and Black. This unusual lager style has many similarities to Imperial Stouts. A lengthy conditioning period creates a silky smooth chocolatey mouth feel enhanced by the use of oats and brown sugar. Noticeable sweetness gets balanced by roasted malt and hop bitterness. At 10% alcohol by volume, this beer is sure to keep you warm on a cold winter night.

A - Poured from the bottle into a goblet - my tulip was in the dishwasher and I didn't bother to hand wash it. I can't differentiate appearance on many of these dark beers. There was a relatively small head that vanished fairly quickly. Lacing was minimal, if it existed at all.

S - Nice bit of a knockback here. The 10% alcohol level is definitely present in the nose. Also a dark, mildly sweet chocolate smell. Little bit of roastiness.

T - Starts off semi-sweet chocolate. Some roasty characteristics build in very quickly forming a nice blend. The alcohol comes in on the finish with a nice little bite. Definitely some heat here.

M - As advertised. It is silky smooth and full-bodied. Jack's Abby has nailed the mouthfeel on so many of its beers.

O - Another excellent beer from Jack's Abby. The alcohol in this one is a little stronger than I like, and the couple Imperial Stouts that I've had recently compared favorably to this one.

Beautiful clear, dark brown brew, settling to very dark, nearly black in the glass. Topped by a 1 finger dark tan head with good retention.

Strong, inviting aroma, teasing dark fruit and equally dark roast. Coffee comes to mind.

Flavor follows, with enormous roasty notes hinting strongly at rich espresso, coated in prunes and bananas. Bitterness provided by the roast.

Medium to medium-thin mouthfeel while cold, with a long, wet, lingering finish.

This is an absolutely delicious Baltic Porter, on par with some of the best imperial stouts out there. Flavor really reminds me of Founders Imperial Stout.

12oz. bottle into a Cigar City snifter.

Pours a thin, cream colored head with moderate to low retention. Beer is pitch black and semi-viscous. Lacing is spotty and stringy with little stick but thick, oily legs. Solid.

Nose is hazelnut, roast, smoke, liquorice, dark chocolate, and cocoa. Dense and aromatic.

Opens chocolate, roast, smoke and hazelnut shells. A fudge sweetness in the middle mixed with molasses, liquorice and more dark chocolate. End is cocoa powder, vanilla, coca cola and tobacco. Pretty good.

Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth and full in the mouth and goes down rich and slightly hot. Messy finish with a filmy, lingering aftertaste. Could be a touch less carbed.

I'm not convinced of the hype over this beer. The taste is there. Complex, with nicely complementing flavors. However, everything else is just average. Worth trying but not a standout among its peers.

Thanks to kmurray8621 for this one.

A - Black with brown edges, dark khaki head.

S - Baker's chocolate, coffee, roast, booze, toffee, mixed nuts.

T - Milk chocolate, toffee, coffee, alcohol heat.

M - Silky, medium full body. soft but pretty viscous heat from the booze in the finish.

O - Smooth beer, very solid Baltic Porter, not extraordinarily complex, but very robust in the flavors and characters it does express.
