Big, Bold, and Black. This unusual lager style has many similarities to Imperial Stouts. A lengthy conditioning period creates a silky smooth chocolatey mouth feel enhanced by the use of oats and brown sugar. Noticeable sweetness gets balanced by roasted malt and hop bitterness. At 10% alcohol by volume, this beer is sure to keep you warm on a cold winter night.

Long, long overdue review on this one but that happens to breweries that are so close by. I have been impressed by this one in the past and this is kind of just the official note taking essentially.

A- Motor oil black pour into a tulip and a snifter with a thick body. Light mocha brown head rises to about a finger or two and has nice retention. The cap falls to a foamy, medium thick ring. Lace deposits are spotty all around.

S- Intense roasted malts with just a bit of yeast and hop influence in the back end. The grains bring dark, burnt barley, dark cocoa powder, toasted, nutty and slight caramel notes. Hops and yeast just round it all out, a bit earthy and fruity.

T- Malts carry over from the nose nicely to the flavor. Deep roast grains give off charred grain, dark cocoa powder, fudgey, toast and nutty notes that make up most of the flavor. Hops and yeast are off some importance to provide a balance with dark cherry fruity, raisin, earthy and slight floral hints.

MF- Thick and super silky smooth body. Carbonation at a low-moderate level and it suits this texture and flavor perfectly. Finishes with a tiny bit of warmth on the palate as well as a dark cocoa bitterness.

It is no wonder that the BA variants are so good. I am glad I had this a few times before reviewing it because it just seems to get better and better each time. Jacks Abby is the best brewery in MA for a reason, well many reasons. (1,422 characters)

Beautiful clear, dark brown brew, settling to very dark, nearly black in the glass. Topped by a 1 finger dark tan head with good retention.

Strong, inviting aroma, teasing dark fruit and equally dark roast. Coffee comes to mind.

Flavor follows, with enormous roasty notes hinting strongly at rich espresso, coated in prunes and bananas. Bitterness provided by the roast.

Medium to medium-thin mouthfeel while cold, with a long, wet, lingering finish.

This is an absolutely delicious Baltic Porter, on par with some of the best imperial stouts out there. Flavor really reminds me of Founders Imperial Stout. (610 characters)

12oz. bottle into a Cigar City snifter.

Pours a thin, cream colored head with moderate to low retention. Beer is pitch black and semi-viscous. Lacing is spotty and stringy with little stick but thick, oily legs. Solid.

Nose is hazelnut, roast, smoke, liquorice, dark chocolate, and cocoa. Dense and aromatic.

Opens chocolate, roast, smoke and hazelnut shells. A fudge sweetness in the middle mixed with molasses, liquorice and more dark chocolate. End is cocoa powder, vanilla, coca cola and tobacco. Pretty good.

Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth and full in the mouth and goes down rich and slightly hot. Messy finish with a filmy, lingering aftertaste. Could be a touch less carbed.

I'm not convinced of the hype over this beer. The taste is there. Complex, with nicely complementing flavors. However, everything else is just average. Worth trying but not a standout among its peers. (904 characters)
