Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

This lager is brewed in the French farmhouse style. We add our own twist by adding 30% Rye Malt, locally grown Triticale from MA and amber Belgian candy sugar. We leave this beer slightly hazy to accentuate the mild fruity yeasty character. Copper in color, a spicy Rye flavor emerges in a dry yet malty finish after lagering for five weeks near freezing.

S: Rich, grainy maltiness, some black pepper, earthiness, slight papery notes, perhaps a touch musty.

L: Amber with a light tan head with decent retention. Ok lacing.

T: Slight fruity malt up front, estery. Medium low earthy bitterness, with a crackery rich maltiness. Finishes slightly spicy with white pepper notes. Rye graininess comes through more as it warms.

M: Medium bodied, medium carbonation.

Great beer with nice complexity. Love what this brewery is doing.

Bottle: Poured an amber color lager with a medium size foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light caramel malt with light spicy rye notes with light rustic cereal notes. Taste is also a mix between some cereal notes with some light spicy rye notes and some chewy light caramel malt notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Interesting experiment from a brewery that I would wish to know more about.

Cheers to Bilco for giving me a bottle of this

Consumed 6/30/13

Appearance: Mostly clear, lightly hazy, somewhere between dark orange and dark copper - pours with an above-average sized, creamy, off-white head - retains an impressive amount of head, leaves some nice gobs of lacing

Smell: More or less smells like a lager with some Belgian influences - clean, crisp, malty lager aromas (the typical quality aroma from Jack's Abby) - some rye aromas - some citrus and other fruity esters, I'm guessing from the yeast - light, sugary and malty sweetness - smells more like a Biere de Garde as it warms up, with some light funk, earthy, and musty aromas

Taste: LIghtly sweet, lightly malty, and lightly funky - pale, lightly grainy malts with some bread and some rye - some sweetness - lightly fruity, with oranges - some yeasty notes, lightly phenolic, with some spice - earthy and a little musty, with a touch of funk, just enough to keep things interesting

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely carbonated, very smooth

Overall: Bros with Sergeant Wheat... or something

I must admit I haven't had many beers of this style, but for what I've had, this seems like an above-average Biere De Garde. It's refreshing, very drinkable, and interesting. I may seek this out again in the future.
