500ml bottle ( March 2013 release) poured into an Idle Hands tulip glass.

A – Super dark brown body…about as brown as it can be and still not be black. A finger of dark tan foamy head settles in for a couple of minutes and falls slowly to the surface leaving a thick collar and some foamy lacing on the glass.

S – Tons of roasted malt with layers of chocolate, coffee and some dark fruit. Barrel does a nice job here to complement the base beer with additions of creamy and sweet vanilla and some light booziness. Smells super smooth.

T – Lots of dark chocolate up front, cocoa powder, coffee. Well placed and appropriately intense barrel contribution. Plenty of warmth and alcohol tingle on the lips and back of the throat. Noticeable bourbony alcohol in the flavor as well. Smooth vanilla, some dark fruitiness and some woodiness as well. Very well balanced – transitioning from sweet and chocolately up front to a roasty, bitter hoppy finish with a healthy dose of bourbon all the way.

M – Very full bodied with a lighter carbonation level. Well integrated bourbon barrel treatment. Plenty of warmth and tingle on each sip, although never overpowering or overdone. Bourbon plays off of the base beer and does not take over the show. Creamy and smooth feeling – a bit slick and oily on the tongue.

O – One of the better BA beers I’ve had in a while. A very solid base beer gets only better with the barrel in this case. Complex and well nuanced – potent but not overpowering bourbon addition…no problem identifying this as a BA beer, but unlike so many, the barrel only complements the base and doesn’t steal the show. Bourbon gives a bit more bite and calms the sweet aspects of the beer while the vanilla’y oak character really smoothes this out and adds to its drinkability.

Notes from 7/13/14 - Consumed from a snifter

A: 1/2 inch of dark khaki-colored head which quickly dissipates. Body is the color of flat cola.

S: Bourbon, vanilla, caramel/brulee, rich chocolate

T: Bourbon, molasses, vanilla, chocolate coffee ice cream. Slightly boozy. As it warms there's more bourbon and caramel sweetness.

M: A little thin on the front but turns syrupy on the back. Slight numbness from the booze.

O : Sweet and sippable. I enjoyed it less as it warmed, but delicious nevertheless.
