American Pale Lager |  5.20% ABV

Availability: Fall

Notes/Commercial Description:
Using 100% locally-sourced ingredients, this lager features hops grown by our Mom and Pop on the family farm in VT, and MA-born hops too. Malted barley and unmalted spelt and wheat provide the finishing touches for this all-local brew. A mild, earthly hop aroma mixes well with malty cereal notes. Not to be confused as an extra hoppy beer, this is a nicely balanced and pleasantly hopped lager.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Pours a medium gold, medium fluffy white head, no lacing.
S - Lager yeast, a light citrus, pepper, a little fresh bread.
T - Biscuit malt, yeast, baking flour.
M - Buttery texture
O - This is a pretty bad miss at the target, there's essentially no real good hop quality at all in this beer, especially flavor.

500ml bottle (I believe the date is 09/16/13, but difficult to read) poured into an Idle Hands tulip.

A - Pours a pale straw colored gold, decent clarity, tall two finger cap of fluffy white foam that falls slowly over a couple of minutes and some nice webs of lacing on the glass. Nice looking beer.

S - Very earthy aroma, not much complexity...a bit grassy, very mildly citrusy in the background.

T - Crisp bitterness, earthy hop flavors, a touch medicinal in its bitter quality. Very dry. I would describe this almost as an overhopped pilsner. A bit grainy, a touch of phenols. Not well balanced at all - just feels wrong. Not undrinkable, but I'm not eagerly reaching for my glass for the next sip either.

M - Medium bodied and a firm higher than average carbonation. Quite pilsner-like in feel with an overabundance of hops that seem a bit out of place.

O - I am a big fan of Jack's Abby and until now, everything that I have sampled from them. This one really isn't hitting the mark for me tho. I find it out of balance and lacking in complexity/nuances. The hops are quite earthy, a touch medicinal, sharp in bitterness and don't play well off of the grainy malt base. Made with local hops, so varietal choice is low...I think the varieties used don't work well in this beer. Personal preference maybe, but not working that well for me.

500ml bottle labeled September 2013, extra'd to me by Respirologist. My first Jack's Abby beer. Poured into an unlabeled snifter today, 10/24/2013 as a way to relax.

Pours a clear straw body, very much like a typical lager with bubbles filing their way to the head. Which is a substantial 1cm white head, very thick and leaves some lacing. Nothing super special, but a nice looking body nonetheless.

Smells very bready, with some floral and earthy hop aromas permeating through. But this is predominantly bready with a little bit of toffee and nuts.

The profile on this beer is pretty much an earthy bitterness throughout dominated by a bready maltiness and floral flavours. Very very balanced lager that tastes like a typical lager yet brings a little bit more to the table. Not über impressive, but flavourful and crisp.

Thinner bodied, still a bit resinous. Very good carbonation, with a mildly dry finish that is refreshingly so. As far as beer goes, I have had better bodied lagers.

Solid lager, nothing super impressive. It isn't that hoppy but its not intended to be. An easy, relatively sessionable lager that is refreshing and not difficult to drink.

Consumed 10/23/13, purchased at the brewery on 10/12/13

Appearance: Pours clear, medium gold with some touches of light orange - pours with a average-sized, creamy, white head, fades to a semi-solid cap, leaves some nice streaks of lacing

Smell: Nice hop aromas without any actual hop aggressiveness - remarkable because it's simultaneously aromatic and mild - nicely floral, lightly herbal and earthy - hop cones - malts are decidedly cereal-like, with some malty sweetness, wheat flakes, and something corn-like (but it's not corn) - lightly cooked biscuits and lightly toasted crackers

Taste: Floral, leafy hops, and a bowl of cereal mixed with crackers - light touches of tangerine and lemon - wheat is pretty prominent, which works - some damp, earthy flavors oddly reminiscent of a saison - no bitterness to speak of - lightly toasted white bread, crackers, and more wheat - finishes clean and dry

Mouthfeel: On the light side of medium, nicely carbonated, crisp, finishes very clean, lightly dry - stupidly, absurdly, insanely easy to drink (even when compared to other beers from Jack's Abby)

Overall: How I Wet-Hopped Your Mother (and Pop)

This is an interesting take on wet-hopping. It's not intense. Instead, it's fresh, crisp, and clean. It has some nice aromas and nice flavors that combine with a stellar mouthfeel to make a beer that I could drink all day. I kind of regret not buying a growler of this (although it would probably be gone within like 12 hours).

16.6oz dark brown bottle. Served in a Pils glass.
The Lager specialists, features an all New England hops and malts brew.
Golden honey colored with a solid snow-white frothy head. The aroma of cut hay and wild flowers gives way to smells of bread and herbs. Tastes of firm pears, dried barley, honey and herbs, blend nicely with an earthy sort of whole hop flowery taste. Sweet malty tastes inch forward creating a subtle balance between spicy hops and sweet doughy malt.
This is an easy-drinker with flavor!
