Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: jbertsch on 10-15-2012

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

The 2012 harvest on our Mom & Pop’s farm was fruitful and this brew uses 100 fresh pumpkins and 40 organic squash. We prepared, cooked, and pureed all the gourds with the help of our friends at Carrie Anne’s Modern Diner. A blend of autumn spices adds to the intense pumpkin flavors. Uses locally grown Triticale from MA.

Bottle > Alpine Spring bow-tie glass

A - Semi-hazy amber in color with a finger of white soapy head, no lacing.
S - Aroma is pretty nice, lager yeast, warm inviting pumpkin smell, some very light pumpkin pie spices, cinnamon, vanilla. A little earthy tones.
T - Taste is very good, creamy smooth pumpkin flavor, light on the spice, which i really enjoy, just a touch of the cinnamon and vanilla, has a more meaty pumpkin flavor than sweet.
M - Very smooth, creamy, good feel.
O - Very good pumpkin seasonal beer, does well with a lager base.

October 2013.
Clear reddish copper - nice colour - with a quickly dissipating beige cap that hung around the rim of the glass throughout. Pumpkin spice in the aroma, but more subtle than in most pumpkin beers. There was still room for the vegetal character of the gourd to be noticed in among the cinnamon and nutmeg. Light flavour, pumpkin/herbal up front, changing to spices towards the end, and finishing with moderate, lingering bitterness. Malt wasn't a prominent player, but there was a grain/malt backbone that held the beer together. A bit slick or soapy in texture, probably from the spices, medium/light bodied. Overall, one of the better pumpkin beers I've had recently.

Deep red/brown body with a decent white head and good lacing around the glass. The smell isn't really inviting. Smells like a commercial lager really until you agitate the glass then you get a bit of spice note. The finish on this beer finally delivers a bit of roasted gourd taste and a hint of spice. I like the lack of overt spice on this beer. It is very easy to drink. It just doesn't really deliver the seasonal pumpkin flavor. It's a suitable fall beer. The body is well made.

Consumed 11/1/13, purchased at the brewery on 10/12/13

Appearance: Darker than expected, a deep amber with some serious garnet - pours with a very small, off-white head, fades to virtually nothing - not much lacing, either - definitely clear, but not the prettiest Jack's Abby beer

Smell: Fresh, nicely cooked pumpkin - some lightly toasted pumpkin seeds - a nice background of typical pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove), but this is really about the pumpkin flesh - nicely toasty, lightly bready, very interesting malt backbone - very, very clean

Taste: Clean, tasty pumpkin - nicely cooked, fleshy pumpkin - kind of squash-like as well - nice spice profile (pumpkin spices noted above), not too much, fits quite well with the other elements - toasty pumpkin seeds - toasted malts, bread - nice complexity to the malts, kind of wheat-like (but probably not) - light sweetness - finishes extremely clean

Mouthfeel: Medium body, low carbonation, very smooth, almost creamy, superbly clean

Overall: Mmmm... crop...

At first I thought this was overly mild, but this beer grew on me. It's not the best beer from Jack's Abby, but that is far from an insult. This is a great pumpkin beer.
