Pours a deep auburn, similar to medium amber maple syrup, with a foamy white head that dissipated fairly quickly leaving plenty of lacing behind. The head settles at the surface and retains a surface presence for a good long time.

Smells quite beautiful, a mesh of citrus/grapefruit and pine and apple.

A light sweetness yields a pungent hop profile. But after that the hops overpower anything else this beer may have to offer in the background, and leaves a lasting bitterness.

Light to medium bodied, light carbonation, smooth and easy going down.

Too hoppy for my tongue, but only just. Teeters on the edge of being enjoyable before eventually falling the wrong way.

12 oz bottle, dated 2 weeks from time of review.

An amber colored beer, nearly red, almost entirely clear. Half inch off-white head that settles slowly, attractive sheet-like lace with good cling. Aroma strikes a balance between fruity hop notes and biscuity malt. The sweeter, cookie side of things is a bit more subtle than the juicy tropical fruit.

The flavor threw me a little because while this is generously hopped, and has both classic German flavors (grassy and herbal) as well as American ones (citrus, pine, melon), there is low bitterness and moderate sweetness. Light biscuit malt flavors prop things up in a nice way but there is an old-school pilsener component to the flavor as well. This is not an "ipa lager" like Mass Rising. Imagine a traditional German Pils hopped up quite a bit with American varieties and then compounded with the sweet caramel and cookies taste of a red ale. Good stuff.

Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation, resulting in a crisp and clean drinking experience. Little residual bitterness (at least in comparison with other beers that are similarly hopped). Slight alcohol note in the finish along with that lingering cookie flavor. There's almost a spiciness to this beer that's very subtle but adds to the complexity - think cloves, allspice, cinnamon.

I dug this one. Different and full of surprises.

Edit: after drinking an entire sixer of this beer over a week I'm less impressed. Something seems a little incongruous about the flavors. Definitely an original brew but im not sure the disparate elements stylistically hang together for me. I found myself liking each successive bottle less than the last.
