bottle picked up locally, enjoyed from a jack's abby snifter.

brew pours a transparent, rich ruby chestnut. thin fizzy head.

nose is toasted crystalized malts...hints of caramel with an alcohol tingle.

taste matches the nose. amber toasted malts. little nuttiness with some piny bitterness on the finish.

mouth is a bit fizzy...malty with a bite

as the amber take on a lager, for what it is, this is nice...but not a combo that appeals to me. i am blown away by jack's abby and the variations on a lager theme that they do...an amber just doesn't appeal to me.

12 oz. bottle poured into a chalice.

Appearance - Hazy reddish brown body. Big off-white head. Leaves remarkable sticky rings of lace. Thick collar and layer of foam.

Smell - Grapefruit hops. Musty pine. Nutty caramel and brown malts.

Taste - The malt profile is dynamic. Starts off with a light sweetness and grapefruit citrusy flavor. Turns much deeper and nuttier later. Full dark caramel sweetness in the middle and a bitter finish balances it out.

Mouthfeel - If I think amber lager, it's heavy. If I think bock, it's medium and just right. I was looking for something a little crisper than this, but that was just my mood deciding what to drink.

Overall - Just on the cusp of too heavy and malty. It turned out to be pretty good, despite not being what I expected at all.

Thanks to Kegatron for gifting me with a bottle of this. 12oz bottle poured into a standard pint. The brew appears a deep copper color with a yellowish stained finger of khaki head. Some spotty lace sticks to the glass.

The smell is piney with hops, slightly vegetative, herbal and catty. It is somewhat spicy with grass and a touch of solvent alcohol to round things out.

The taste is pine forward, quite resinous, herbal, grassy and carty. A light amount of fruity alcohol before getting somewhat solvent with alcohol.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is interestingly bitter and solvent for a lager but worth trying if you get the chance. Thanks again Heath.

500ml bottle poured into a New Belgium globe.

A: Pours a very clear amber/red color with a towering, creamy off-white head. Retention is awesome, and a thick blanket lacing covers the entire glass. This is a good-looking beer.

S: Aromatic pine and earthy, leafy hops. Underlying tropical fruit scents of mandarin orange, tangerine, and white grapefruit. Bubblegum and berry fruits seem to be malt-derived. Malt base smells a tad grainy with a touch of brown bread, but stays sweet and sugary overall (crystal malt?).

T: Hops start off by laying down some nice tropical mandarin orange and tangerine tastes. Bitterness builds as the hop tastes shift to leafy, earthy, oily, and piney. Herbs and a touch of pepper. Grapefruit rind and pith. Malt base is on the sweet side initially. I do pick up a bubblegum taste as I did in the nose, though I'm not quite sure where that's coming from. Dark bread and mixed nuts. Maybe a touch of coarse wheat? Things dry out toward the finish as cocoa, grain husks, and a slight woodiness begin to dominate. Finishes with a dry graininess and fading oily hops.

M: Medium body, slightly firm, very creamy. A little bit chewy and dextriny. Moderate carbonation.

O: I'm not quite sure where they were trying to go with this one. The name would suggest a bock kicked up a notch with American hops. Not a bad attempt by any means, but I still find it a bit confusing on the palate. It dries out a bit too much toward the finish, presumably to showcase the hops more, but that kind of curtails the bock aspect of it. Unless my palate deceives me, it seems like there's some specialty malts at play here too. The malt base just doesn't taste as complex as a bock's should, and it makes for some odd flavors (maybe that bubblegum?). Having said all that, this is still a worthy beer at the end of the day.
