A lengthy conditioning period in bourbon barrels creates a silky smooth chocolatey mouth feel enhanced by the use of oats and brown sugar. Noticeable sweetness gets balanced by roasted malt and hop bitterness. Additional flavors include bourbon, vanilla, and oak.

Bottle at RBSG. Look and aroma is pretty much the same as the rest of the series. Taste brings the coffee, very lightly. Still sweet, a bit lighter on the back end.

The beer pours a good-looking creamy head that a brownish tan color. The beer itself is an opaque dark brown color that looks very nice. Overall, the beer looks like it has a very clean texture to it.

The smell is pretty good. It has a moderate chocolate and brown sugar smell that dominates the other smells. There is a light coffee bitterness that comes out towards the end.

The taste is very good. It starts off fairly sweet with a chocolate and brown sugar note but the more bitter coffee notes and wooden oak come out towards the finish. The bourbon and vanilla are surprisingly light.

The feel is good. It has a heavy body but an incredibly smooth bordering on slippery feel to it. It also feels clean.

Overall, this is a delicious beer worth getting.

The pour is quite nice, with the tan bubbles maintaining a bit of structure after the pour. A quick sip reveals a thin sheet across the glass from my lips that is reclaimed as I return the vessel to upright.

Opening aromas are lightly roasted malts that give a bit of a bitter chocolate and some hints of licorice. Impressions of tart, dark fruit come through a tad more than any specifically from the barrel. Coffee and barrel grow throughout the pour, but work in what I think are appropriate proportions to the roasted malt throughout.

Back to a couple sips finds the coffee starting to come through, lightly sweetened and perhaps with a splash of whiskey. The nose is opening with the same increase in barrel influence. Back-end bitterness is starting to blossom, as well, with a drying effect on the feel. I'm starting to get a more consistent and interesting evolution from the beer - lightly sweet opening to a dark roast coffee, followed by a bit of barrel tan that evokes thoughts of fruit, leading to a well-integrated whiskey presence, and finishing with high-cocoa dark chocolate bitterness. Quite nice.

In review: 2021 Vintage

A - Pitch black pour with very dense light tan lacing.

S - Heavy on the roast and chocolate char followed with light coffee ground and Bourbon.

T - Chocolate roast, chocolate char, coffee, and Bourbon from start to finish. The barrel aged presence is definitely there along with heat in the back of the throat.

M - Big medium body that's dry on the back of the tongue.

O - This is a pretty fantastic Framinghammer variant. Recommended.

Bottle poured into a minor goblet. Heavy coffee nose. Minimal barrel. Lots of chocolate taste in the front. coffee in the aftertaste. Pretty good porter, would like to try the rest of the Framinghammers.

Very dark, with a tan head. I get a lot of coffee in both the smell and the taste. Not so much bourbon. I'm not bothered by that, as bourbon can overpower other flavors. But it's amusing that "Bourbon" is more prominent on the label than in the beer itself. The roasted malts are right there, along with vanilla, and some bourbon flavor to be sure. The ABV isn't very noticeable.

Overall, it's quite a fine beer, well balanced, and well executed. Especially recommended if you like coffee beers.

500ml bottle into a goblet. Etched date on base of bottom of bottled hard to understand, not that it matters much with this beer.

Looks splendid in the glass. No light can penetrate the darkness, small tan head dissipates to a ring and sparse covering. No lacing to speak of.

Rich coffee aroma and warm alcohol.

On tasting, smooth, sweet, lovely coffee taste. Barrel aging restrained, which I appreciate. Faint roast, slightly warm. Superbly balanced.

Mouth close to Full, finish warm coffee.

Overall, a really enjoyable beer in front of a fire as the snow falls in NE Pa. Balanced, and probably goes down a bit quicker than it should.

Barrel Aged Framinghammer – Coffee from Jack’s Abby. Purchased 10/20/20 for $10.59 (Including tax) for 16.9 oz bottle ($ 0.627/oz) from Shangy’s in Emmaus, PA. Reviewed 12/11/20.
Undated. Below the left edge of the label etched into the glass in near-microscopic characters “80114V2122208”. On room temperature shelf at store and stored at home at 42 degrees. Served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 60.6 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When held to direct light, same.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.1 cm, aggressive center pour), fawn, high density with a rocky top, average retention, diminishing to a five to eight mm crown fed by effervescence, and a thin complete cap. This lasts throughout the entire consumption. Second pour produces a tight 0.8 cm head.
Lacing – Fair. Broken spiderweb fragments hang on the glass.
Aroma –3.5 – Weak coffee, no malt no hops, no yeast. Lasts but becomes ephemeral.
Flavor – 3 – Begins slightly bitter with extremely weak coffee and no roasted malt, no hops, no yeast. No bourbon or barrel flavor. No alcohol (10 % ABV, according to BA, NOT marked on container) taste or aroma, although an annoying gastric reflux-type warming does occur. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends with weak coffee, like iced coffee after the ice has melted.
Palate – 4 – Medium, on the cusp of creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3, after deducting 0.25 points for no date and 0.25 point for no ABV – I shouldn’t need a secret coder ring to see how old and what ABV my drink is. Both the appearance and the palate are what keeps this in the average range – aroma and flavor fall short.

A charcoal black brew with a finger of tan froth.

Aroma full of treacle and dark fruits such as prune and black grape. Graham cracker and herb are also noticed.
Super complex flavor with syrup and and other sweet treats up front and doses of pine and herb following. Dark fruits and a fusel spiciness throughout.

Medium to heavy but definitely lightens up as it warms.

This is the King of the remind me to check the cellar more often beers.

Pours opaque, jet black in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is big dark roast coffee and light barrel. Heavy bodied, moderate carbonation, slightly sweet and roasty. The coffee taste is very pronounced in this variant--moreso than other variants. Tasty and a solid entry in the Framinghammer series.
