Poured into a globe.

A- Black with a fast cream head. Lacing is perfect. Looks light but for a Baltic Porter this is expected.

S- Bourbon, vanilla, faint coffee, sweet malt, alcohol and light roast.

T- Bourbon, vanilla, oak and coffee. Finish is rich espresso and chocolate.

M- Medium to light body. Excellent carbonation and its chewy for a lager. The chocolate fudge and coffee flavor resides for some time after each sip.

O- Amazing. One of the best Baltic Porters I've had. It makes me excited to drink the rest!!!

Looks like Framinghammer (no surprise) - dark with ruby highlights, fine tan/brown cap, lacing. Lots of coconut in the aroma, some roast and coffee, chocolate and malt, slight alcohol. Less coconut in the flavour, moderate bitterness with cocoa and malt, alcohol and chocolate, mild coffee and roast, balanced sweetness. Nice texture, creamy and smooth, moderate carbonation and full bodied, a little warmer than regular Framinghammer. Quite good, but the coconut in the aroma was turned up a little high in the balance.

Good, thick head that settles slowly, leaving many chunky spots. Deep dark brown where no light shines through.

Strong dark cocoa aroma with a bit of chalkiness. A touch alcohol as well.

Very rich body and flavor. Complicated malts of chocolate and some black patent, giving a definitive coffee flavor. Lots of alcohol warmth. This is particularly notable in the aftertaste. Light on the carbonation.

2014 batch. Tulip glass.

A: Pours a very dark brown color with a half finger of light, foamy tan colored head. Good retention, with a thick, large-bubbled collar of head with some streaks and dots of lacing.

S: Rich, dark roasty coffee up front. Delicious. A touch of dark chocolate bar, vanilla, cinnamon, and graham cracker.

T: Coffee is again up front, along with the melted dark chocolate, cinnamon, finishing mostly dry and a touch on the watery side. A little bit of an alcohol bite, esp. as it warms.

M: Medium-light body and carbonation.

O: In both the taste and aroma, the coffee is the dominant flavor. Everything else takes a back seat, which means this isn’t as balanced or complex as it could be. This is more like a delicious coffee porter sans the barrel aging.

A: Black body, brown highlights, one finger of tan head. Good retention and lacing. Very nice.

S: No surprises: rich coffee dominates from front to back, with some vibrant bourbon spixiness underneath. Charred oak as well. Intense and great.

T: Roasty, vibrant coffee up front; spicy whiskey and vanilla oak in the middle; harsh booze and bitter char on the finish. A little rough, but tasty.

M: Soft, well-carbonated medium body. Luscious.

O: My favorite of the three (this, Vanilla, and regular BA), but still not terribly great. These 10% brews were considerably hotter than many (if not most) 12-14% monsters. Rare disappointments from a great brewery. Forget the hype, give me a regular Smoke and Dagger any day.

500ml bottle poured into a New Belgium globe.

A: Pitch black. Three fingers of bubbly beige head. Lacing sticks in broken rings and patches.

S: Nutty coffee. Rich mocha. Fudge sauce. Hints of wood and vanilla. More layered chocolate aromas. Chocolate chips and fudgey brownies. Roast and a bit of starchy oats. Whiff of bourbon.

T: Fudge sauce. Mocha. Nutty coffee builds, but never dominates. Layers of chocolate: fudgey brownies and double chocolate cookies. Chocolate caramel chews. Barrel flavors pick up steam, first with caramel, then woody flavors, and culminating with a big warming bourbon presence that never feels hot. Bourbon and barrel flavors are strong on the finish.

M: Medium thick. Full in the mouth with a silky and slightly viscous feel. Tame prickling carbonation. Warming bourbon.

O: Not as coffee forward as I expected, but that's actually a good thing. The beer strikes a nice balance,though the barrel takes over in the end. A sipper you absolutely must seek out if you love a good bourbon barrel aged beer.

Updating for the 2015 batch. (I had 2014 as a 4.25). Incredible improvement on an already very good BA baltic coffee porter. I feel like this batch stood up with the KBSs and Parabolas of the world in all categories.

Picked up from the brewery a couple weeks ago and poured into a snifter...

A - Very dark brown with a half finger head on a hard pour. Pretty good lace retention

S - Coffee, chocolate, bourbon are the primary winners here. They are right at the forefront

T - Coffee, tasted marshmallow and chocolate shine with a bourbon character finishing it off. I also get oats, vanilla, espresso. Not as complex as can be but the characteristics work great together

M - Probably my only gripe, feels pretty thin for a 10% barrel ager. With that said, it is creamy and smooth

O - A fantastic offering. I missed out on last years version but not this time. Drinks pretty damn easy for a 10%. I love the coffee and bourbon blending but the thinner mouthfeel brings it down a tad down for me. Overall, an excellent brew and Jacks Abby continues hitting home runs. Nice job!

A-Pours very dark brown. Body is clear, however. A very aggressive pour yields a slowly dissipating army of tan bubbles. The head dies off significantly leaving very light lacing.

S-The coffee absolutely mollywhops you upon the first sniff. Just a cold cup of java. Behind the espresso and dark roast coffee is an oaky bourbon. Hints of chocolate pop up as well. They really nailed the coffee aroma here. The Vanilla Barrel Aged Framinghammer's nose was more complex but I actually enjoy this one more just because of how aggressive the coffee is here.

T-The coffee simmers down a bit here and let's the rest of the beer speak its piece. The bourbon is more vocal here, which is a great addition to the overall flavor. Don't be fooled, the coffee is everywhere. The oakiness and coffee remind me so much of an Irish Coffee. I find the Vanilla variant to be more complex but sweeter and less dynamic than this version.

M-It drinks too easily. The body isn't viscous at all. It has the flavor and alcohol of a big time Imperial Stout but it drinks like a beer half it's ABV.

O/D-The Framinghammer family of beers is exquisite. This is my favorite one...it's close, though! Trying the variant next to the coffee variant is a good time. I personally enjoyed this one the most but honestly, it's splitting hairs. Jack's Abby is a temple!

I brought the whole 2012 set to our monthly tasting.

A - Pours pitch black with a nice one finger tall tan head, slowly dissipating down to a light film, leaving small streaks of lace down the sides of the glass.

S - Smells of strong coffee, vanilla, bourbon, oak, coconut, chocolate and smokey dark malt. The coffee is quite strong while still being balanced with the other aromas, very nice work.

T - Starts off with the strong fresh brewed coffee slowly being joined by some mild sweetness, - mainly the chocolate and vanilla - toasted coconut, smoked malt and warming woody bourbon. Finish is pretty roasty with some mild sweetness, lingering long after the finish. Not as well balanced as the nose but still really nice.

M - Heavy body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, roasty feel with some nice sweetness to even it all out. A bit of tannins and very light booze dry the palate at the end of each sip.

O - This was probably my favorite of the three, just barely beating out the vanilla. The coffee really accentuated the base flavors and yet it remained easy to consume. Glad I could try this one and share it with everyone.

Bottle. Brown-black pour with a nice off-white head. Aroma is deep espresso and milk chocolate. I also find layers of butter and cream that makes it exquisite. Taste is roasted malts, coffee and cream. So rich without being cloying and overly sweet, oats adds a nice creamy touch. Extremely well balanced imperial stout. The most intense (and best) oat stout I've had.

A - Looks the same as the others more or less.

S - Coffee, vanilla, coconut, roasted malts, marshmallow, and oddly enough there's more bourbon here compared to the other versions. Coffee is well-integrated, and doesn't overwhelm like the vanilla does.

T - The taste has lots of roast, with some coffee, but more in the way of espresso bitterness, smoke, and charred oak. Reminds me a lot of the regular version, as the coffee integrates well with the pre-existing flavor profile.

M - Similar feel to the other variants, although the coffee and vanilla versions were a bit more tannic than the regular versions, presumably from the adjuncts. Still quite smooth in texture, with light residual stickiness and no obvious alcohol.

D - Good stuff, although I think this may be my least favorite of the three variants. Still, it's a delicious beer that I'd happily drink again at any opportunity in the future. Perhaps a bit more coffee would bump this up to world-class.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black, but not inky. Medium khaki head.

Smell - A ton of coffee. A little bit of green to it. Sharp. Less barrel. Some bourbon though. Booze.

Taste - Nice bourbon. Coffee blends better. Dark chocolate, vanilla. Less of that nuttiness and oakiness.

Mouthfeel - Nice body. Chewy, but boozy.

Overall - I enjoyed this just as much as the barrel aged without coffee. The coffee is almost too strong, but well blended.

Shared by alexfields at our tasting last night. Poured into a Bell's tulip.

A: Deep, dark, brown color. The pour created a minimal tannish head that dissipated rather quickly.

A: Notes of dark chocolate, earthy grain, and coffee. The coffee is prominent and well received. The bourbon almost takes a backseat to the coffee in this one, which is rare.

T: Great roasty coffee flavor supports the malt profile. Notes of Chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, and earthy bitterness. The bourbon is not overpowering, it just adds depth to the beer and accentuates the rest of the flavors. The beer finishes sweet and bitter just like a beer of this magnitude should.

M: Great carbonation levels. Full body.

O: what a fantastic brew! We had all three variants of the beer, and this one was my favorite. Will be trading for this soon.

From 06/02/13 notes. Got to try this side by side with the normal BA and BA Vanilla versions. All 2013 vintage, 0.5L bottles, poured into taster glasses.

a - Pours a deep mahogany brown, almost black color, with one inch of light tan head and moderate carbonation evident. All 3 variations look exactly the same, pretty nice.

s - Smells of great fresh coffee, coffee grings, milk chocolate, roasted malts, sweet bourbon, caramel malts, oak, and toasted malts. While the normal version has a little coffee to it, this one has a ton in the nose, very fresh and up front. Love it, better than the normal BA version.

t - Tastes of fresh coffee, espresso, milk chocolate, vanilla, cream, cocoa, roasted malts, bourbon, coffee grinds, oak, coffee, and toasted malts. Again, like the normal BA version but less chocolate and a lot more awesome coffee.

m - Medium to full body and low carbonation. Smooth and creamy, with no real heat. Very easy to drink for 10% ABV.

o - Overall I really liked this one; I liked it more than the normal BA version, though not as much as the vanilla one. Tons of fresh coffe in both the nose and taste, a great coffee porter that continues to improve on a great beer. Would highly recommend checking out.

16.9oz bottle, poured into my Rock Island snifter, and shared with NO ONE...Adam, you are the man...

A: Dark brown body with tawny/ruby edges; half a finger of tan head caps the beer and leaves some lacing.

S: Fantastic aroma, without being overpowering; big chocolate presence complements a very fresh, roasty, espresso/coffee bean. Bourbon barrel is underneath that and unites the flavors, but isn't really at the forefront. What is essentially a nose full of mocha is very inviting, with some dark caramel and vanilla hiding underneath that.

T: The coffee profile asserts itself here, roasted beans and fresh espresso shots, with the slightest presence of sweet alcohol and a complementary bitterness. Bourbon barrel is well-integrated but on the mild side, and again layers of mocha, chocolate, caramel, vanilla, and brown sugar all round out the flavors.

MF: Nearly full bodied, but not heavy; very drinkable.

O: Extremely impressive - excellent balance of flavors and barrel. The coffee is there and tastes very fresh, but doesn't overpower the other components. This isn't quite BCBCS (mostly because Framinghammer lacks a boozy hotness), but this IS a bba coffee beer I could drink all the time (unlike BCBCS). Just awesome stuff.

Very dark, with a robust tan head. Settles nicely leaving decent lacing and a ring of head around the glass

Smells like it should, rich alcoholic coffee. There is a very awesome roasted coffee scent and just a touch booze. The coffee smells so fresh, it's fantastic!

Taste is again (I'm not a coffee expert at all, BTW), fresh quality coffee right away. It's a raosted and decadent coffee with no smoke flavors. I can pick up on a slight chocolatey taste and just a little from the BAL treatment, thats a good thing for me as I don't like when beers are dominated and overpowered by the barrel. This is there, but a little more subtle than most.

It feels great in the mouth. There is a silkiness smoothness, with just the right amount of dryness as you swallow. Thew carbination is near perfect. The ONLY thing I would point out, and it's minor, is I personally felt it was just a tad thin in the body.

Overall, this shit is awesome!! I really enjoyed the 'regular' BA Framinghammer, and this took it to the next level! Can't wait to try the vanilla!!!

Without a doubt, this is worth seeking out.

Served in a snifter

A tight, creamy, bubbly, one-finger, mocha colored crown topped the dark brown liquid. The head quickly fell to a film of large bubbles. Sheets of lacing initially coated the glass with every sip. The lacing eventually transformed into spotty drops.

Intense coffee notes dominated the nose. Somewhat roasty and espresso-like. Freshly ground espresso beans came to mind. Super smooth and fragrant. A touch earthy. Aside from the coffee, I also picked up some brown sugar-like sweetness along with hints of vanilla. Mild bourbon notes appeared as well.

Like the nose, the flavor profile was also quite coffee-forward. Tons of freshly ground coffee beans. Some espresso-like earthiness. Lots of dark, roasted malts and brown sugar sweetness. Caramel notes came through as well. Bourbon appeared on the back end and in the finish and lent a pleasant alcohol warming. Earthy hops and roasted malts were also noticeable in the finish. Overall, quite well balanced.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied. Slick, creamy and smooth but slightly thin for the style. The liquid contained a fine, moderate carbonation.

After trying Framinghammer and Bourbon Barrel Aged Framinghammer and being hugely disappointed by both offerings, this beer really surprised me. The addition of coffee really rounded out the flavor profile and gave this beer the balance and complexity that the other versions lacked.

A: Pours a dark, robust brown with a big and persistent tan head which leaves lots of lacing. Gorgeous.

S: Amazing. Fresh dark coffee first and foremost, followed by dark chocolate. A bit of charred brown sugar and a little bourbon.

T/M: Coffee again dominates, and it's excellent -- glad I didn't age this one. Roasty but not bitter. Malty chocolate is powerful, too. A little woody and vanilla bourbon flavor that's more pronounced as it warms. Some dark fruit comes out as it warms, too, which actually doesn't compliment the coffee all that well. A little booze burn. Mouthfeel is close to perfect. Silken, slick and very thick.

O: One of the best coffee aromas/flavors I've ever had in a beer, but it seems like a slight mismatch with the base beer (though the base beer is outstanding, don't get me wrong). I rank it a little behind Bourbon County Coffee overall. But still excellent.

Appearance: Like the standard BA Framinghammer. Again, rich, dark, brown with a frothy tan head that actually hangs around for a bit.

Smell: The coffee is forward with the bourbon lurking just underneath, again chocolate.

Taste: Rich coffee which actually takes some of the heat out of the standard BA Framinghammer, all on a very good way. The roast and mocha flavors really balance this beer well. Strong, strong mocha all with the vanilla and oak from the barrel. Again, as it warms the mocha flavor intensifies.

Mouthfeel: Excellent body, and very, very, smooth.

Overall: I really like the BA Framinghammer but I liked this offering even more. Incredible coffee porter!

Split with rudzud.

Decent creamy dark head hits almost 1 finger and fades at a med pace, some lacing pitch black beer.

Nose wow, ridiculous coffee, it's like fresh ground espresso bean, nice roast, fresh coffee, no booze, plenty more dark choc, nice vanilla oak barrel, all the base beer with loads of coffee in top.

Taste is nice but a bit boozy, again base beer with lots of coffee, but the booze kicks in quite a bit, lots of bitterness too, tons of fresh coffee grinds but almost like chewy on coffee grinds with roast and bitter coffee, but not burnt. Plenty more dark choc, bitter dark choc, light creamy choc, just a bit of barrel that gets drowned by coffee. Finish is long bitter coffee, earthy coffee grinds, light roasted flavors from the coffee, more bitter dark choc lingering.

Mouth is same as the other beers.

Overall great nose but that same crazy coffee grinds overpowers the flavors and gets a bit too bitter, booze is a bit strong, and the coffee drowns the other flavors too much, but I'm still nitpicking at a great beer.

Bottled March 2013 but just released last week.

A: Pitch black pour with a large, dense medium brown head. Head fades away slowly and with great retention. Solid walls of lacing too.

S: Lots and lots of fresh roasted coffee. Mild char and some dark fruits mix in nicely. Mild bourbon hiding behind the coffee with some caramel, burnt sugar and a hint of oak.

T: Oh yeah, this is nice. Coffee is more subdued here and the bourbon stands out a little more. Wow. Wonderful coffee flavor, one of the best in a beer I've ever had. Silky dark chocolate joins it with hints of char. Caramel and burnt sugar sweeten it up and just a dash of dark fruits. Smooth throughout. A little vanilla kicks in in the middle. Coffee turns a little sharper in the finish with just a slight acrid edge and a brief booze hit from the bourbon. Lingering burnt sugar and oak in the finish. Masterful. I originally scored this a 4.75 but after finishing the bottle I upgraded to a 5. I just can't find any flaws, it was a dream to drink and I'm literally sad that the bottle is gone now. How can you ask for anything more?

M: Fairly heavy, silky smooth and decadent. Wonderful.

O: Wow, I thought the regular bourbon barrel version was amazing. This is somehow even better. Coffee is delicious and a wonderful additional layer of complexity. Yet, not overpowering like so many coffee beers. Despite being so fresh, flavors are very well integrated and complementary. Taste is smooth and mellow despite the strong flavors and goes down so easily. One of the best beers I've had in quite a while. I can't find any real flaws.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a deep dark black brown hue with a nice quarter inch mocha head that fades to leave a thin wispy blanket and light lacing.

S - Gaaah! Aromas just explode. Coffee to the Max, rich freshly roasted and ground coffee. So so deliciously smelling. Lots of dark chocolate notes, faint Bourbon, soft malts. Super balanced.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with very nice dark chocolate, sweet malts, caramel, bitter roast, nice ground coffee. Just incredible. Like the vanilla though there is a fair amount of booze.

M - Mouthfeel is good, nice and smooth but relatively boozy..

O - Overall this was a solid beer, but as good as some of the notes are I still prefer the base beer to these.

A- Pours a midnight black with a full mocha head, looks fantastic

S- This is the best part of the beer for me. Everything comes together for full, well rounded notes of vanilla, cold-pressed coffee and dark chocolate. Reminds of a vanilla mocha, fantastic

T- The taste is not quite as well rounded as the nose; the coffee becomes dominant along with some heat. I love coffee so this isn't too big of a deal and I treat the alcohol presence as just a reminder to sip! I could see this deterring others though from giving high ratings.

M- For some reason just did not come across the same as regular barrel aged framinghammer, seemed a touch lighter, but not in a serious detrimental manner

O- There is some heat still, so setting this aside for maybe 6 months may be ideal to ease that and if you don't like coffee- dominant brews, that could help as well. As a coffee fan, I think it is great now, but will likely try to keep one or two for a bit just to see how it ages. Fantastic brew and look forward to the next batch
