Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Two years into our brewery and we're fueling the fires surrounding extremely hoppy beers. In celebration of our anniversary and in support of our fans, we're brewing this extra hoppy Double IPL. Together, we have taken a journey to redefine the term "lager". Prost!

Called Mass Rising when released, but that name was later used for a new recipe lager.

A-Pours a fairly cloudy straw yellow. Big, fluffy, doughy head sits atop the beer. Its really quite pretty actually. Great, thick lacing.

S-Not surprised by the hop explosion that hits my glands. Mosaic, Amarillo, Apollo, Citra, Calypso and Simcoe hops create an awesome, unique hoppiness. I can really grab those Citra hops too. Awesome, exotic fruits, moss, pineapples, mangoes, everything I want.

T-The flavor is truly unique and it is spectacular. Herbal and fruity hops transform their flavors several times. Definitely a unique flavor and I can see some people finding it to be a bit to forward with its individual hoppy flavors but I love it. Lager yeastiness settles in on the back end along with some sweet, crackery maltiness. I set aside a small pour and let it warm considerably and after all that green, mossy hoppiness it turns into a legitimate clone of peach juice. Shocked at how peachy it tasted at room temp.

M-Bitter but not searing. Very drinkable; even during a hot night, this beer drinks clean with no trace of booze.

O/D-Kiwi Rising is one of my favorite beers ever. ABCS was awesome too. This one is in the middle. Easily one of their best beers. Happy I grabbed more than one bottle of this beast.

Thanks to Jeff for splitting the Jack's Abby goodies. The 2nd Anniversary Lager pours out like liquid sunshine; golden yellow with a moderate haze that swims throughout the entire body. Surprised by the lack of clarity, but it still looks decent enough. A soapy, beaming white head rises up and only take a few moments to gather into a thick collar and thin ring on top of the pale brew.

As expected, based on the description as well as their regular IPL, the aroma is filled with pines and peppery spice. There's some pretty dank hoppage going on, and even a mild cat urine aroma that's floating about. I'm thinking Simcoe and/or Summit are being used somewhere in here. White pepper covered white grapefruit peels (wut) with mild orange and other, more nebulous notes of bitter citrus. Nothing in the aroma notes at much lager yeast or even malt. This bad boy is all about the hops, through and through.

Resinous and full of pine is the first sip with a tongue clenching bitterness that strikes immediately and takes its time mellowing out into a much softer, underlying, bread malt sweetness. When the raw, oily hop flavors start to fade, they also begin to reveal their fruitier side - citrus, grapefruit, orange, more on the bitter side still, but a touch of juicy flesh is hidden in there somewhere. As mentioned previously, cracker malt is notable in the finish.

So far, it seems like a hoppy lager that might as well be an ale, since the only real tell that this is a lager is the crisp and dry finish. Carbonated well, thin bodied, and super clean after each sip, though the initial look might not hint at that exactly. I wish for a little more taste from the yeast itself, or perhaps even a stronger, bready malt presence from start to finish, though the beer is still pretty nice if your goal is to have something indefinitely hoppy.

I've enjoyed the three Jack's Abby lagers I've had up to this point in my beer drinking career, although I've gotta say that many of them could probably pass for ales. They've all got a nice, crisp, clean finish, but I've seen similar palatable qualities achieved with ale yeast, or at least close enough to not require extended and cooler fermentation. In any case, another good brew, though I prefer the less aggressive, more drinkable Hoponius Union.

Appearance: bright yellow in color, 1 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: pine and citrus hops

Taste: pine and citrus hops, rind, and light toasted malt

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sweet start with a big bitter middle and a less bitter end, dry

Overall: 100 IBUs and showing it. This will not disappoint those who love hop bombs. Much like the rest of Jack's Abbey's brews, it is very clean. Nice beer, but one is good enough for me.

Dark golden pour. Very strong citrus flavors. Crisp feel and finish. Foam retention on this one was impressive. Visible carbonation.

Jack's Abbey clearly knows their lagers and this is a good example of an extreme lager. Very solid offering.

Poured into a nonic tumbler from a bottle- pours a bright golden orange color, clear, visibly effervescent, an abundance of foamy off-white head, great retention and nice streaks of lacing. Beautiful.

Smell is mild but enticing- definitely get a good dose of pine resin and faint traces of pilsner malt and yeast.

Taste is excellent- very hoppy yet incredibly well balanced with malt and yeast flavors. Super drinkable, even at 8 percent. Pine resin up front, followed by orange citrusy hops, then a mixture of malt sweetness and yeast fighting with the hops and it finishes unsettled, leaving a long, very enjoyable aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is really awesome also- medium body, well carbonated, a good dose of resin but not too sticky. Only reason I didn't give a five on mouthfeel was because it's perhaps a tad bit too sticky for my taste but it's really an exceptional brew. Go get it!
