Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Two years into our brewery and we're fueling the fires surrounding extremely hoppy beers. In celebration of our anniversary and in support of our fans, we're brewing this extra hoppy Double IPL. Together, we have taken a journey to redefine the term "lager". Prost!

Called Mass Rising when released, but that name was later used for a new recipe lager.

Bottled earlier.

Dude at bottleshop (Todd) told me this was really dank.

It's light gold with a solid sheet of whites and near brilliant clarity. Smells absurdly dank, marijuana, pine, weed, dankness, the dankness, my high school years, etc. Flavor is a little less hoppy, but dank nonetheless. Lots of resiny hops, some nice pilsner malts, and a bit of bitterness, but really, really hoppy flavor for the style. Medium on light with hi carb and a wet finish. This beer is seriously tasty, but appears not to give a fuck about a poorly defined styles guidelines. Cheers to Jack's Abbey.

Bottle sent to me thanks to Jesse, thanks a lot man! What a treat! This may be one of the best hoppy lagers I've had bar none, to my intense american palate this is what I'm looking for.

The beer is a beautiful hazy golden color with a very good ring of head and some sticky lacing, a really nice sudsy look that is just so attractive.

The smell is super fresh and hoppy, very clean and robust at the same time. Lemon tinged grassy hops dominate for me with a slight biscuity backbone with some coriander and nearly minty piney notes too and then some more citrus of the tropical; variety. A very awesome aroma, it is really appetizing for a hop head like me.

The taste features the hops nicely as well, but there is more of a sweetness I wouldnt have expected, though it is tempered by the dry yeast and bitter hops, leaving a aftertaste that is a good mix of bitter and sweet at the same time. Also some cereal type notes as well that compliment the tropical citrus pine resins nicely.

NOTE: I found that at the start of drinking this it had more edge and kick to it, and as it warmed it got a bit more malty and sweet for me (but I still loved it); I'd recommend having this on the colder side as opposed to letting it warm at all out of the fridge.

Mouthfeel is nice, it has a great creaminess to it and an appropriate amount of carbonation, it leaves a nice aftertaste and hits all tastebuds nicely!

Overall a very nice beer, very glad to try it and wish I could easily get more and try it on tap as well. cheers!

500ml bottle poured into a New Belgium globe.

A: Golden-amber in color, leaning a little harder toward golden. Two fingers of creamy white head display excellent retention. Lacing forms a scraggly collar on the glass, and also leaves a few small patches here and there.

S: Extremely dank. Sticky bud, orange and lemon pith, white grapefruit, mango. Hint of spicy alcohol. Clean. Underlying biscuit malt is very hard to pick out.

T: Gripping bitterness. Dank, resiny, oily hops body slam the palate. Hemp seed, spicy and oily herbal hops. White grapefruit, lemon pith, notes of pineapple and mango. Soapy. Spicy alcohol has a stiff jab toward the end. Grainy and toasty malt character is all but choked out by the hops. Finishes with a relentless oily and herbal hop bite that leaves a spicy impression on the tongue.

M: Medium body. Somewhat fluffy and filling in the mouth.Oily, astringent, and enamel-gripping. Somewhat aggressive carbonation cuts through the oils, but also plays up the spicy nature of the hops.

O: This has got to be very high up on the priority list for all the hop-heads out there. It’s got all the bitterness you could want and then some. A very well-executed hop bomb, 2nd Anniversary is more than just a beer with hops piled in. Clean, crisp, and focused: this took some skill. Bravo and congratulations to Jack’s Abby.

Appearance: bright yellow in color, 1 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: pine and citrus hops

Taste: pine and citrus hops, rind, and light toasted malt

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sweet start with a big bitter middle and a less bitter end, dry

Overall: 100 IBUs and showing it. This will not disappoint those who love hop bombs. Much like the rest of Jack's Abbey's brews, it is very clean. Nice beer, but one is good enough for me.
