Notes/Commercial Description:
We aged last year's Leisure time Lager [a spiced, wheat lager] in wine barrels with wild yeast and souring organisms. Through this process, the beer is transformed creating a lightly tart, funky and dry beer. Prost!

A. - Hazy golden yellow with an off white head that sits on top

S - Lactic acid, sour lemon, light wheat and straw

T - Light tart sour apple, wheat, light white vinegar and lemon. Reminds me of a Berliner

M - Light body with minimal carbonation. Actually a nice and soft mouthfeel

O - Nice easy drinking sour from Jack's Abbey.

thanks to pjl44 for this awesome extra!

poured into tulip glass.

Appearance: brilliant yellow bodied beer that is slightly opaque, but overall its more clear that it is opaque. It looks like slightly concentrated urine or lemonade with a white head on it. 1 full finger of bone white head. Drops quickly to a thin cap. Spotty lacing.

Smell: Very bright citrus. Straw / hay notes and slightly sweet wheat malt. Mild spicy and lightly fruity yeast. Smells like it fairly tart.

Taste: Almost has moderate tartness levels, its on the high end of low levels of tartness. Orange zest and lemons! Citrusy and bright flavors just like the nose. White grapes, hint of oak, hint of musty funk, earthy, and a slightly bit of acetone in the finish. Acetone is very faint and is not distracting to the flavor profile in the least, but it is definately there.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with moderate carbonation. So crisp, so light, so refreshing, so drinkable, very bright, and very clean. Carbonation is impressive. Its soft and its delicate, but it comes alive when it hits your tongue. Drinkablity is off the charts.

Overall: Love the diversity shown here by Jack's Abby. As far as I know, this is the first attempt at a sour beer. I really enjoyed it alot. I honestly dont know of many "sour lagers" as the brewer calls the beer on the label. It is a unique beer. I have only drank a handful of beers from the Biere de Garde style, but this is easily one of the best. It is a really memorable beer. It goes down really easy, but still has some nice complexity. Watch out top new beers list... here comes Sour Time Lager. Bravo Jack's Abby!

500ml bottle into an over sized wine glass. Huge thanks to skittle34 for grabbing me some bottles from the release. Opens quietly and with zero carbonation or foam drama. Pours a clear golden yellow body with the last ounce or so of sediment hazing it up. A fingers worth of white foam simmers down into some sticky edging with large bubbles. Loads of gorgeous lacing.

S - An incredibly clean and refreshing aroma of lemons, chamomile, bread, and grass. Funky brett and white wine notes subtlety hang out in the background. About as inviting as a beer gets, this thing screams summer.

T - Wheat bread and tart lemons. The coriander and chamomile of the base beer are still hanging around but are very subdued and faint. A layer of grass and mild cheesey funk washes over the beer before finishing off with a touch of white wine and oak. A lactic twang in the aftertaste. There is a lot going on here however each element is very mild and subtle. Tasty and refreshing as all hell. Medium bodied and well carbonated, this is crazy drinkable given the ABV.

O - Not exactly sure how a wine barrel aged witbier + critters = a berliner but all right, the similarities are here. It's certainly not the most exciting American Wild...lager, but it is insanely drinkable with just enough going on to keep it interesting. The wine barrel is just present and honestly if it were any more noticeable it might detract from the clean flavors of the beer. Simply awesome stuff.
