Bottle sent to me graciously by Dope, otherwise I'd never have a chance to try something like this...split with my brother into a Deschutes tulip.
A: Hazy brown with some red highlights, off-white head recedes pretty quickly.
S: Smoky wood and a good amount of sweetness, seems to be caramel but I suppose it could be maple? Barrel character appears to be pretty light as it warms, which makes sense for a low abv beer dominated by smoke. There is a touch of earthy campfire as well, but not overwhelmingly smoky.
T: A bit more smoky wood emerges on the palate, fruity sweetness as well. There is some caramel there as well, but it is buried. Slight bready maltiness pokes through, as well as a hint of the bourbon/spirit. The rauch-finish to this one isn't really pleasant to me, but overall the smoke is manageable.
MF: Thinner medium body.
O: This is a tough one to score; would have loved to find some more barrel character in the nose and on the palate, but its tough with a lower abv smoked beer, I know. For a rauch, I believe this one is a bit subdued; the smoke is there, but even without tasting the original (non-ba) version I think the time in the barrels has cut the sharp, smoky edges off of this beer. There is a bit of sweetness (maple?) in the nose and taste too, but also not as much as I would have hoped.
Overall this is a decent beer, and something I was very glad to have tried. Thanks Dope!

Barrel aged maple lager pours a clear amber color with a small creamy head on top. The foam fades quickly leaving a few spots of lace on the glass.
The aroma is smokey with some caramel sweetness and a little maple. Like hard maple candy.
Each sip of this medium bodied beer is smooth, creamy with moderate carbonation. The flavor is like the aroma, smokey with caramel sweetness and a maple finish. Some oak and vanilla notes are noticed in the background. Hard maple candy finishes off each sip. Once gone the maple and smoke lingers on the palate.
I didn't get much barrel character from this beer. It seems like the regular version to me, with a touch of oak and vanilla. Still a tasty beer that is well balanced with smoke and sweetness.
