In the spirit of our local history we are revolting against the status quo. We are writing our own story by fueling the fire surrounding extra hoppy beers. We infuse Mass Rising with increasing amounts of American hops during the kettle, hopbock and dry hopping processes. Together, we have taken a journey to redefine the term 'lager.'

M: very creamy very nice

O: very good beer they make hoppy lagers like nobodies business I wonder what one of their straight up IPAs would be like. Fantastically fruity and great mouth feel

Serving: Bottle into pint
Served: 14 Feb 2015

Appearance: Wow does this beer look great. Deep gold color with a foamy one finger head that leaves incredible lacing all the way through. Really an incredible looking beer.

Smell: Lots of big hoppy notes- citrus and pine are the two biggest ones I can identify. Little to no lager biscuitiness or anything in the nose.

Taste: Smooth and crisp, as one would expect from a lager, though not as clean as a traditional one. Malts seem to be improved by the lager yeast and lagering over a DIPA- they are a bit sharper, cleaner, and crisper, which I think lets the hops sit on top of the beer rather than feeling saturated with cloying sweetness like many DIPAs.

Feel: Medium-high to high body with a distinct crispiness.

Overall: A great beer, and probably my favorite from Jack's Abby so far. Really like how the lager yeast and lagering affected the DIPA flavors and made a crisper, cleaner but still massively hoppy beer.

Got in a BIF from ZebraCakez. 12 ounce bottle into lager glass; bottle dating is worn off. Pours hazy deep golden color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big lemon zest, orange peel, grapefruit, citrus rind, pine, herbal, floral, grass, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of bright citrus/pine hops and light-moderate pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, herbal, floral, grass, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, lemon/orange zest, citrus rind, pine, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of bright citrus/pine hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a great bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors with zero yeast ester notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very excellent IPL style. All around great complexity and balance of bright citrus/pine hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Appearance: Poured from a bottle purchased from the brewery. Hazy golden-yellow; a thick, billowy head with spotty lacing as it was drunk. Visible carbonation, with bubbles continuously forming.

Aroma: One of the most pungent pilsners I've tried, smelling strongly of tropical fruit, but also piney hops. Breadiness is also evident.

Taste: A distinctive layering of flavors comes through; first breadiness and crispness, and then as the beer finishes, piney, resiny hops and a tropical finish. Delicious, and not a hint of the 8% ABV.

Mouthfeel: Sticky and resinous like a potent IPA, but crisp on the lips like a lager. Pleasant.

Overall: A delicious, sessionable lager that sneaks in fantastic hop flavor and relatively high alcohol content. I'd drink this any day of the week.

This is what an IPL is supposed to be, this is the king of IPL's. No other comes close to this in Aroma, taste, look and feel, it gives you all the amazing characteristics of a world class IPA but with the lightness and stunning crystal clear picture perfect quality of a pilsner. If you can get a hold of this beer do so.

It's a step up from the harsh imbalance of Kiwi, but I still think it doesn't work as well as Hoponious. The lager yeast/heavy hopping combo creates a shrill effect. Losing hold of the malt character isn't super surprising for the style, but without it here the shrillness is especially stark. Wouldn't reach for this, deferring instead to the aforementioned Hoponious or another more balanced option from JA.

I am beginning to really like this style. I received this on as an extra on trade. I have no idea if these fall off like IPA’s supposedly do, but it tasted pretty damn nice considering it is an elderly 4 months old!

Appearance: Light yellow and hazy, pours with a huge pillowy head. Very much like you would expect from a lager.

Aroma: Floral and tropical notes. Hops are present but not in your face either. Pleasant aroma.

Taste: Once again this brewery has hit a homerun with this beer. You get the nice tropical mango notes from the hops and some floral notes as well. But, the lager component smooths this one out, it has a bit of bite on the back end but it is full and juicy.

Overall: Well made beer totally enjoyable! I would seek this on out again for sure

Pours a pale yellow with a white soapy froth that leaves a sheet of lacing of the glass. The aroma is hoppy but also with gassy, bready lager notes. Herb, bathroom, and lemon scent.

The brew is bready and also quite bitter with an earthy, dry hop flavor. A one two punch of lager sweet and hop carnage, Bitter, piney, herbal, bready and smooth. No trace of 8% alcohol really in the taste,

Overall, this is a nice full bodied double IPL with ample hop flavor. Not the most complex, but great for what it is.

Look: Faded lemon color. White pillowy head. Nice looking bottle.
Smell: Smells like a Lowenbrau.
Taste: This has a Germanic taste combined with light hops. Light and somewhat refreshing. A hoppy Lowenbrau.
Feel: Excellent. Crisp. Dense carbonation. Light to medium body.
Overall: An interesting tasting beer. For me, this tastes like a nice session beer with a high ABV. I would like more. I like it a lot.

This beer has won me over ... When I first had this beer I didn't put this beer up there with Kiwi Rising BUT I put them both right up there with each other.. Mass Rising has a nice strong hoppy smell to it... Very distinct taste and smell.. Such a great beer..

A- pours a clear bright golden color with a creamy one-finger head that retains nicely, leaving some nice lace behind

S- spicy hop aroma with some grassy and herbal notes, hints of lemon peel, yeasty, slightly bready malt

T- spicy saaz like hop flavor up front with some grassy and citrus notes, spicy herbal notes transfer into bready malt flavor, dry finish with more grassy notes on the linger

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a creamy almost chewy dry finish

O- fresh and hoppy, with the drink ability of a lager, another winner

L - poured into tulip glass. Hazy golden yet not super cloudy. Thick head on the initial pour, dissipated a bit. Lacing sticks around.

S - I'm picking up on malts here - bready I'd say. Not a big hop aroma.

T - smooth. bready. hoppy yes. floral too.

F - light carbonation

Awesome beer. As advertised, a hoppy lager with a crisp refreshing finish.

Best beer I've ever had? no.. but the best lager I've ever had by far. Hence, a high rating, number one in that class.

This is a very good beer, with one exception...carbonation. The aroma was very good and the taste is stellar, my issue is the carbonation. To me this beer is slightly over carbonated. With all that said I would still buy this hoppy, golden , well balanced beer.

Bottom Line: The brews good.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a very large white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick but spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains grassy hops, fruity citrus, lager yeast and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with a floral burst of hops bitterness followed by mildly sweet flavors of citrus and caramel. Then some breadiness from lager yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character comes in and creates a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a very flavorful beer worth drinking for a long time.

Pours a bright gold with a rather foamy head that leaves plenty of lacing.

Smells of grapefruit, and some apple. Standard hop fare here.

This beer bites back, citrus on the front, bitter finish. Not getting too much by way of complexities.

Medium body, crisp exit.

Not my kind of brew, but one of the better IPLs I've had.

Pours hazy yellow with a fluffy white head. Big time lemony aroma here with some grassy pine to go along with a hint of pineapple and honey. The flavor is lots of lemon bitter hops, a bit of pine, some fruits, and low sweetness from the malts. Finishes smooth but with a funky note left on the palate. High carbonation, light or medium body, super easy drinking, and slightly dry. Overall extremely solid and dangerously crushable.

This is really good beer, pick up a sixer if you can get it. It has the hoppiness of a good IPA but it's significantly smoother. It doesn't have that biting astringincey. Really well balanced, just a hint of sweetness. Remarkably drinkable at 8%.

From 09/16/14 notes. Had a 12 oz. glass of this at Lord Hobo in MA for $8...very good.

Pours a hazy golden color with one finger plus of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident. Nose has a ton of citrus hops, oranges, floral hops, fruity malts. Taste follows the nose though not quite as hoppy. Some tropical notes as well. Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Easy to drink and smooth.

Overall I liked this a lot...I thought it was really good and had an amazing nose to it. Easy to drink and worth checking out, would drink this all the time if I could.

Bottle poured into a snifter. It pours a slightly hazy dark straw color with a big white head. The head lingers for a bit and leaves nice lacing down the side of the glass before dissipating slowly. The nose is a little lemony with notes of grass and grapefruit. The taste is a little more herbal and grassy than I anticipated but the citrus notes still dominate the palate. Lemon and grapefruit come through the strongest. Light bodied and clean on the finish.

A great IPL that I would love to have regular access to.

A: This head. Blows my mind! Thick pillow of sea foam atop a hazy, pale straw liquid. This is what beer should look like! The type of lacing you'd kill for and the head just won't die!

S: Grassy and herbal, with some light grapefruit and citrus, Smells dry and intense.

T: Surprisingly bitter and hoppy, but good. Lemon ring, grape fruit and grassy notes, with lots of pith and some herbal elements like marjoram and, even a hint of lavender. Mildly astringent.

M: Medium body with soft carbonation, the mouth-feel is sturdy, yet gentle.

Overall, a little bitter for my palette. Somewhat astringent and the herbals are a tad medicinal, but, sometimes you need your medicine! I'm impressed that this is a lager.

poured 12oz bottle into snifter

A - Hazy and straw colored with a 2 finger white head. Fades into a thick collar and there is webbed lacing aplenty on my glass.

S - Lighter malts similar to Pilsner, some grains and pleasant yeast. Hops are bright and fruity, hints of pine, citrus, and lemon zest.

T - Starts off with the light sweetness of a Pilsner and moves into a nice hoppy bitterness. Malts are light and cracker like, bits of grain before the hops take over. Nice and bitter, with pine and good amounts of citrus, including grapefruit and lemon zest.

M - Medium bodied, well carbonated. Clean and dry with some hop residue.

O - I would bet that few could tell this apart from some of the best IPA's on the shelf. I almost thought I was indulging on a Toppling Goliath IPA for a moment.

Served on-tap in a 10 oz clear glass snifter at The Reservoir (Waterbury, VT).

A: Clear honey-golden with 1/2-finger cap of foamy, light beige head with good retention and a think collar of lace. (4)

S: Noble hops dominate with grassy, minty aromas combined with slightly sweet pilsner maltiness with a light grainy edge. Alcohol is well-masked. No yeast esters. (3.75)

T: Clean and crisp despite the high ABV, it drinks more like 6% than 8%. The minty, herbal nature of the hops carries through all the way from early to the finish with a clean lightly grainy and sweet pilsner maltiness that is bready. The flavor, while enjoyable, is not terribly complex. Bitterness is medium at most. (4)

M: The feel is amazing for this big of a beer -- still crisp and drinks lighter than its true heft. (4.25)

O: I liked this beer but wish it had more complexity -- it is a one-trick pony flavor-wise but it does that trick with noble hopping well.
