Served on tap at Pinocchio's Pizza in Media, PA.

A: A hazy honey-like hue with a 1 1/2 finger slightly off-white head. Head retention is a bit weak and not much lacing is left behind.

S: Lots of tropical fruit notes. Pineapple and mango, namely. Lots of grapefruit aroma melded in as well, with a little bit of grassiness and earthiness underneath.

T: Some bready malts upfront with a bit of mango seeping through before being overrun by the grapefruit characteristics of the hops. Lots of floral and grassy notes underneath it all as well. Finishes a bit citrusy and piney. Lots of standard flavors, but the mesh in a rather unique way, if I can be honest...

M: This brew was a bit on the full side, which made it kind of a chore to drink at the bar... Lots of creaminess to be found with a subdued carbonation. Normally this is a texture that I'm quite fond of, but I prefer my IPAs and DIPAs to have a little bit of a bite and crispness to them, and I didn't find it here.

O: I'd feel like I was lying if I called this world-class, but I'd also feel like I was doing an injustice if I didn't give it the praise it deserved. It's a complex brew with some great flavors that drinks decently, even though it has a bit of a clunky body. It might be better to sit at home and have a bottle of it whilst relaxing, but I didn't find myself enjoying it too much at the bar. Perhaps a re-visit will result in a better impression.

Helltown Brewing
Idle Hands Double IPA

Pours a perfectly clear golden color, with white head that dies down to a small lace. Aroma of grapefruit, mango, pine, herbs and alcohol. In the taste, a nice sharp hop bite, with piney, earthy resins. Herbal elements, more citrus and a solid bitterness. Malt body is pale and sweet, almost honey like. Alcohol is well balanced by the other flavors, but this is a big beer. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, crisp and well carbonated. Overall, a very solid imperial IPA. Local, fresh, and tasty.

A - Golden body, slightly hazed, white head has some retention and little lace.

S - A little weak for the style. Some tropical fruits and caramel sweetness with a touch of pine.

T - Green, herbal, leafy, pine hops with a bready, caramel malt backdrop providing a nice balance. Light on tropical fruit notes, but has a nice bouquet while maintaining a relatively low bitterness level.

M - Medium body and carbonation. Finishes clean and dry with little lingering bitterness. Not a palate ripper by any means.

Appearance: Arrives a hazy amber with a decent cap; some lacing is left behind

Smell: Very resinous and pithy aromatics

Taste: The beer starts out resinous and pithy and gets more bitter as the liquid hits all the tastebuds; a slight bit of residual sweetness in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Quite a nice DIPA though I didn't get the fruit flavors that other reviewers tasted; definitely worth a try

A nice pour from the tap into a standard cheater pint.

A: golden clear with 2 finger white head. A good bit of lively caronation. Lacing evident and thin disk lasts throughout.

S: some dank lively hops, a lot of the mosiac and simcoe found in new age east coast IPAs. Very nicely presented.

T: Follows nose, getting that earthy cumin/cilantro (A-hops?) and that now classic mosaic style hops straight up.

M: Creamy, medium filling. puts the whole thing back to what an east coast dipa is evolving into. Very smooth, slightly slick.

O: The east coast guys are proving once again that hops are not exclusively a piney resiny punch in the chops. Nicely executed delicate DIPA.

Draft poured in to a snifter.

Hazy goldish-orange color. One finger white head that didn't stick around for too long. Settled in to a thin film that left a little bit of lacing.

Big grapefruit and citrus. Nice bitter hops. A bit floral. Light sweetness.

Lots of citrus with a mellow sweetness that follows. Lingering bitterness, but an ultimately clean finish.

Pretty carbonated, but the finish is sharp and clean. Kind of resinous. Very smooth. A little bit of alcohol warmth.

A very nice drinker from a local up-and-coming brewery. Perfect amount of hops mask the booze pretty well. Can't wait to try their next offering!

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served a lightly hazed golden-amber color with a one finger of white foam atop the surface. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a great level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer a nice mix of sweet and hoppy. The sweet is a blend of tropical fruit smells of tangerine, mango and pineapple with just a hint of apple in there as well. The hop aromas are heaviest of a grapefruit smell but also have a good showing of a pine hop aroma. Rounding out these smells are a light bready and caramel aroma as well as just a hint of earth.

Taste – The taste begins with a bready and tropical fruit taste. The tropical fruits are mainly of a tangerine and mango nature. Along with these flavors are a rather moderately strong bready taste and a decent showing of pine hops. As the flavor advances the pine grows slightly stronger and is joined by a grapefruit hop flavor. While the pine is heavier than the grapefruit upfront, this quickly changes with the grapefruit soon surpassing the pine and really making a strong presence in the taste. A lighter bit of an earthy flavor works its way onto the tongue as well, mixing with the strong grapefruit and moderate pine flavor as well as the tropical fruit flavors of the brew to leave a nice resinous bitter but balanced hop flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is average. Overall the mix of a thicker body and moderate carbonation are quite nice for the blend of sweet and hop flavors of the brew, making for a rather nice medium for the flavors.

Overall – A nice somewhat resinous, but very balanced and good drinking double.

Cloudy dirty amber with a yellow-orange glow. A little lip of head.

Holy tropical fruit blast! Pineapple juice, grapefruit juice, and mango nectar from the hops. Mega-fruity and oily. Immensely delicious nose.

Crushing hops on the first sip. Bitter and fruit sweet. More citrus and peach and pineapple. Doughy malts and a persistent yeast character. Resinous hops and malts like a glazed doughnut. Tastes great.

Very thick for a DIPA and hardly the carb to compete. Light tacky stick from the sugars and suspended yeast. I kind of like how big it is.

Appearance and feel drop it short of exceptional class. Certainly not one of the elite, but a damn fine hoppy imperial.

I had this on tap at Federal Taphouse.

a murky looking hazed IPA with sunny shade and thick cream. The smell is loaded with Galaxy hops, lots of tropical fruit and passionfruit scents in particular. The feel is very good bitter but not wrecking with one glass.

The taste has lots of Galaxy, actually it tastes like that was all that was used, very tropical and moderately bitter -extremely drinkable for an 8% IPA

Good. About time I come across a new (to me) Helltown brew. Solid dipa heavy on the citrus with a strong tang going on as well. Consistent and smooth flavor. This is an extremely solid dipa. As long as you like citrus tones, I can't see why you wouldn't like this one. Great balance.

Had this on 2013-08-18 in Columbia, PA

A - Hazy golden peach with a 1-finger white head and moderate lacing.

S - Fresh and juicy pineapple, peach and orange, light malt, touch of pine and hop floral.

T - Initial pineapple and peach, some pine, light malt. Bitterness comes in pretty quickly and lingers but not too long. This is very fresh tasting. Dries nicely leaving a fresh tropical and orange zinger tea flavor to compliment the bitterness. Alcohol almost unnoticeable.

M - Light-medium body and carbonation. Pretty soft. Hint of prickle and resin but doesn't cling to the mouth.

O - This is a wonderful DIPA from our home state. My son-in-law turned me on to this and I'm glad he did. Ranks quite high on my list of favorite DIPAs.

On tap at House of 1000 Beers, New Kensington, PA.

Poured into a shaker: Golden-amber, with a finger of off-white head & a few slow nucleation bubbles. Cloud, webbed lacing.

Smells of very fresh grapefruit, dried flowers, slight lemon bar kind of sweetness. So fresh, keep going back for more.

Taste is bitter citrus peel @ first, quickly sweetens & gets a little bready momentum, like a lemon sorbet with that dry bitterness grounding it, very good.

Starts with just a flash of abrasive affront in the mouthfeel, then mellows, smooths, & fills out, goes down so nicely.

This is one great DIPA, if you ask me. A lot of up & down going on here, kind of teases with just enough challenging notes before getting pleasant & really turning into something nice. Helltown's been one that's really impressed me so far, & this is a high water mark for them up to this point.

At Piper's Pub, Wednesday 2/1/12 at day that put Helltown on the map for me. I also got to try their Brown Ale, Insidious IPA, and this beer Idle Hands DIPA. This one pours almost a clear golden/brilliant copper hue, a bright white head that dwindles slow leaving bands of lacing around the sides of my glass. Aroma has deep citric notes of alcohol with a slew of tropical fruit including papaya, mango, and a touch of juicy pineapple, extreme tropical fruit from the hops. Flavor is sweet upfront with honey malts but the tropical fruit combinations hit with ample bitterness balancing out this beastly beer into somethin extraordinarily enjoyable. Candy coated hops with a bit of booze in the back end, only 8% not nearly as kicking as some of the DIPAs out there. Mouthfeel is not cloying, carbonation is even medium to fuller bodied DIPA a solid solid big hoppy beer possibly the best brewed in the greater Pittsburgh region. Overall, I'm a fan of Helltown needless to say the cream of the crop of the newcomers flooding the scene.

A- Pours a hazy orange-gold color, with a frothy off-white head that laces nicely down the stemmed glass.

S- Citrus, mainly grapefruit, honey, pine, hops, etc..

T- Sweet honey, citrus hops, a little bit of pine, finishes between bitter and sweet. it's hard to tell. Regardless, nicely balanced.

M- Medium bodied and relatively smooth. The ABV (whatever it is) is pretty well-hidden, but you notice later (especially after 2, which I had).

O- This was a very good DIPA. Idle Hands has a nice sweet taste that is well balanced between the hops and the malt. ANOTHER GREAT IPA from Helltown. For a small operation, Helltown continues to put out high quality beers.

A-hazy dark gold with a thin white head

S-smells amazingly delicious. Fresh citrusy hops. Just a really strong and high quality scent.

T-comes in with a slightly more aged taste of citrusy hops and grains and maybe a touch of weeds. It has a good touch of creaminess and peppercorn to it. It's definitely a complex beer. Definitely a high quality IPA. After-taste is mostly hops.

M-medium creamy carbonation with a nice creamy finish

O-this is an awesome IPA that I recommend to any hop head. The taste has a good blend of bitterness and flavor with out ok much focus on either, but it reaches an awesome level of complexity. Drinkability is quite high.

32 oz. Growler into DFH Signature glass. Growler was filled this afternoon, 8/14/13.

A - Pours a hazy apricot color with just over a finger of cream colored head. The head sticks around for a while and peels back to reveal a painted coat of lacing.

S - The aroma was apparent as soon as I started pouring. Huge ruby red grapefruit and nectarine, coupled with overripened tropical fruits. There is a distinct bitterness lingering behind the sweet, tangy fruits. Just a touch of light grain to round it out. Smells very similar to some of my favorite Vermont/Maine IPAs.

T - Picks up right where the nose left off. Citrus dominates along with some cereal grain. Tropical fruits in the back of the throat. Bittering hops of the pine and citrus varieties add a drying quality to the finish. The flavors improve as it warms just a bit. Amazing.

M - Maybe a little bit undercarbonated but I credit that to the growler pour. Dry, crisp, and refreshing.

O - I was excited to see this on draft at Whole Foods. From the first pour, I could smell the hoppy goodness that is Idle Hands Double IPA. The citrus and tropical fruits are in full effect with just enough bitter hops to keep you honest. Malts take a back seat, but that doesn't diminish the high drinkability of this beer. Reminds me a lot of MBC Lunch and, dare I say, the great Heady Topper. Grab this one if you have the chance, it is THAT good.

Pours a clean yellow to orange-ish color with an off white head. In the aroma, orange citrus hops. In the taste, pine to orange citrus hops. A hop bite and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a semi dry pine and orange citrus hops in the aftertaste. HOPS, HOPS, HOPS!! Love it!

On tap - I stumbled into this gem at Ten Penny's in the Strip

A - A touch lighter for an IPA with low carbonation and a decent head

S - Smell was wonderful. Grapefruit, tropical fruit, a touch of onion, and dank hops. It really had a wide spectrum of earthy and citrusy hops.

T - Very similar to the nose. Almost no malt presence. Huge hops up front, very prevalent, no malt presence to speak of...just how I like it. Citrus is the most forward flavor.

M - 8% is very well hidden. Pretty light on the tongue due to such low malt.

O - Overall this is the best local IPA I've had. I find it very similar to Sculpin and Jai Alai which are 2 of my favorites. I really recommend this one.

Very excited to have a Pittsburgh area brewery finally make an outstanding IPA. I usually do not enjoy 2x IPAs, as they are generally more abv and less hops, but this fantastic brew does an awesome job of blending a higher abv with an incredible hop taste & flavor. It is 1 of the best doubles I ever had. Well done Helltown.
