22oz bomber poured into a Trillium pint glass.
Pours a cloudy golden-amber crowned by an impressive three-finger bone-white head. Head fades over approximately three minutes to a sudsy film and collar atop the beer. Sticky curtains of lacing.
In the nose, a massive bonanza of grapefruit flesh, pineapple, mango, melon, and lighter notes of pine, pale malts, and a light rye-like spiciness. Juicy and inviting, practically jumps out of the glass at me.
Taste follows the nose, only more so. Bitter citrus and grapefruit juice on the front of the palate yields to a delicate and nuanced balance of tropical fruit, passionfruit, melon, and light bready maltiness. Finishes fairly dry and piney, with hints of rye spiciness and bitter grapefruit pith.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, smooth and creamy on the front- and mid-palate but finishing dry. Prickly carbonation, ABV is well-hidden.
On the whole, color me very impressed. I like Backlash in general, but on this one they really knocked it out of the park. Galaxy remains one of my favorite hop strains, and this is an excellent example of its unique flavor profile at work. Highly recommended.

Tap at Horseshoe Pub in Hudson.
Nice creamy 1+ finger head fades pretty slowly with nice soapy lacing, semi hazy golden honey orange color.
Nose fresh hops, very floral and mild grassy earthy, some citrus with mild orange rind and hint of grapefruit, little pith and gets quite rindy, with a pretty big sweet malt underneath, little candied orange peel.
Taste starts with more hops, fairly bitter at first, lots more orange rind and grapefruit pith, some orange juice and little tangerine, as well as mild floral earthy hops. Then a fair sweet malt, little candy like sweet malt and reddish fluffy like malt, with good balance... at first. Sweetness attempts to mask the mild alcohol but it comes through a bit. Finish dries and gets very bitter, astringent bitterness with spicy chewy hops, earthy, lots more citrus rind, also a sticky feel.
Mouth is med to fuller bod, nice carb, hint of warming booze.
Overall not bad, glad I got a pint at a bar rather than pay a ton for the bottle, it's pretty good though, nice balance at first with a huge bitter aftertaste, hits everything pretty well for a big dipa, lots of Orange peel though.

22 oz. bomber poured into the larger version of the Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Liquid comes out an extremely hazy orange color. You can't really see through it unless you hold it up to the light. White head with various sized bubbles at first, but it's the smaller bubbles that stick around the whole time leaving small film and a ring around the top. Not a bad looking beer, but it looks more like an unfiltered Belgian pale ale than a double IPA.
Smell is pretty good, doesn't smell quite as hoppy as the average double IPA. Dominantly citrus hops come out. Fresh tangerine and ripe orange peele. Strong bready aromas, probably pale and wheat malts. Slightly spicy, maybe a little bit of Rye.
Taste is pretty much on par with the smell. Maybe the hops are a little more prevalent. In addition to the citrus and citrus peel flavor there is a grassy/earthy tone to it as well. Not too much in the way of sweetness. Wheatey breadiness to that would make it almost seem like a Belgian IPA.
Mouthfeel is ok. Full bodied, heavy and a lingering flavor. Good carbonation level, but it's fairly gritty and an unpleasant bitterness to it. Drinkability is ok, it actually grew on me as I kept sipping it. More of a summer beer than a year round IPA. Not bad, but not great. I'm curious to try more from Backlash.
