The nose is not big. There is some caramel, dark kettle sugars, and light grain. There is no smoke, no big fruit aromas, no diacetyl, and no big alcohol aromas. It pours brilliant ruby tinted chestnut under a very thin white head that quickly dissipates. Big malt flavors supported with kettle sugar caramelization, English malt spiciness bordering on anise, and a gentle nuttiness. The upfront sweetness dries out somewhat on the finish. Hops are fairly low. The overall palate is clean and smooth. The body is chewy supported by medium to a little less on the carbonation.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish ruby amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of off white head that settles into a thin patch.

Smell: A toasty and fairly sweet malt forward aroma with hints of caramel and biscuit. Toasted barley malt with hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, nuts, and yeast. Sweet hints of brown sugar. Fruit hints of apple, cherry, fig, raisin, and dates. Decent hints of leather, tobacco, and peat. Subtle earthy hop hints. A very solid malty aroma.

Taste: Like the smell, a nicely toasty and sweet malt driven taste with good notes of caramel, biscuit, and fruit. Toasted barley malt with notes of biscuit, caramel, toffee, toast, grains, nuts, and yeast. Sweet taste of brown sugar and molasses. Fruit undertones of fig, apple, raisin, cherry, and dates. Also some Scotch notes of peat, leather, and tobacco. Light notes of earthy hops in the background. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very creamy, silky, and drying on the finish. Alcohol is barely noticeable.

Overall: A very good take on a Wee Heavy/Scotch ale. Good biscuit malt flavor with solid fruit tones and a smooth body.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep amber. Small white head. Thin collar.

Smell - Toffee. A hint of oxidation. Caramel with that distinct scotch ale aroma.

Taste - Sweet caramel. Toffee. Buttery. Nutty. Slightly bitter in the back with just a hint of oxidation.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy. Medium low carbonation.

Overall - Tastes good, not very interesting, though.

Dark amber color with a red tint. One finger of head that slowly settles to a thin cap. Moderate amount of spotty lacing is left down the glass.

Not the strongest of aromas. Get the caramel, toffee, and bready malt with floral and earthy notes. No sign of alcohol.

Flavor is smooth, rich, and clean. Wonderful caramel and toffee flavor. Minor earthy notes. Alcohol is well hidden with barely any warmth. I wonder if the brewer used an American yeast? Do not get much for fruity esters or buttery byproducts.

Big body with excellent carbonation that gives the body a creamy mouthfeel. Well done.

Nothing too special about the flavor of the beer but still well done.

Brownish murky red wine type body, thin finger of off-white head retains briefly, good amount of alcohol legging.

Loads of toasted grain and hard water / brown ale notes, sweet soft caramel qualities, extremely soft and approachable for an 11% beer - zero booze on the nose, maple syrup, earthy faint hops, nice.

Caramel apple, leathery toffee, some fresh tobacco, they warned that the booze was still pretty hefty but I don't pick any of that up... peat moss, a touch of black licorice, easy drinking.

I'm not typically a scotch ale drinker but this is nice.

750mL bottle from BeerMeDuffMan (thanks!). No discernable bottling date. Served in a goblet.

Pours a deep crimson hued chestnut with a two finger cap of manilla froth. The head fades completely, leaving no retention and no lace whatsoever.

Smells of caramel, fruit skins, mildly earthy grains and hints of oxidation. Neither smoke nor alcohol play into the nose, a bit of a surprise for the style.

Flavor has considerably more going on than the nose. Caramel, vague fruit- more like apple or pear but slightly dark fruity, toasted grains, nutty, slightly bitter dark tea, a mild earthy grit, burned sugars, English malts, faint metallic notes, a little buttery and some booze. Sweet malts all day long.

Medium full bodied with fairly low carbonation. Caramel, butter and vague fruits play of the palate in the aftertaste.

Steel Toe's Wee Heavy is a respectable take on the style. I appreciate that they didn't go the over used smokey route. Still not enough to make this a style I crave.
