12 oz. into a snifter/ no freshness date
P: Completely opaque with a 2-fingered chocolatey brown head that looks really thick and creamy. Showed decent retention as it sank to a thin cap and left some whispy strings of lace.
A: When cold, the nose seemed really underwhelming to me, but as it warmed up the aromas really came out of their shell and regained my attention. It smelled of roasted malts, chocolate-powdered coffee beans, molasses, and citric hops. I think I'm going to like this...
T: ...and I do. Even though this bottle is obviously oxidized, I can still appreciate what's going on here. It's very roasty and full-flavored with big notes of coffee beans and chocolate fudge oozing from the sizable helping of malts. It does get a bit burnt at times, which gives off a charred astringency that is kind of off-putting. But, the sweet molasses and woodsy undercurrent does a pretty good job of taking the edge off, while the citirc hops and dark fruits work their way into the fold to deepen the profile and balance things out.
M: Extra Stout is a medium-full bodied beer that leans more toward the 'medium' side of things the more I swish it around. It's not silky smooth across the tongue, but does have a nice, slightly chewy feel that does a more-than-adequate job of complimenting the flavors.
Notes: Besides the wet cardboard and slightly burnt malts, this is a pretty darn good stout. I've been really impressed with the other Steelhead offerings that I have had (Scotch Porter & Double IPA) and this one is no different. I would love to buy a fresh six pack of this, and session the un-oxidized version. It speaks volumes about this beer when even an oxidized bottle gets high marks! Recommended

Pours a deep inky black, with no light getting through. There is a smidge of dark tan head and no lacing. The aroma is strong alcohol esters with just a little bit of roasted malt. The taste flips this around with much more emphasis on the roasted malts. It has a slicker mouthfeel and a nice smooth finish. A very good stout.
