This was served from the tap at The Blind Tiger (labeled “Chili Pepper Extra Pale Ale) in New York, NY. It arrived in a Boulder Mojo IPA pint glass, showing a pale orange coloring. It held a creamy white two finger head, showing nice retention, but leaving no lazing around the glass as it went. There was no sediment noted, but a thick permeable haze. Carbonation appeared average. The nose was huge with whole raw jalapeños, pale sweet malts, and light citric hops. The pepper spice was so authentic, and the aromas so simple, it just clicked effortlessly here. It did, however, drown almost all flavoring out of the nose, but it was in a good way. Our impression was that it was crazy spicy with hot peppers!! As we sipped, the heat and spice of those same raw, dirty jalapeños hit with the flavoring of an actual pepper. The middle peaked with a bittering malt bite, wheaty grain, orange flesh sweetness to cut, and that persistent peppery vegetable quality. Booze began to seep in here, with hints at fresh ground black pepper, as well. The finish was with lemon bite, citric hop freshness, and sour pale grain. The aftertaste breathed of that same spicy jalapeño pepper, wet pale malts, and juicy citric hops. The body was on the full side, and the carbonation was medium. Despite this, the latter allowed big froth and creamy slurp when moving the beer around your mouth. There was additional nice slurp and glug to each sip. The mouth was left hot with spice, and the lips were tingling with the same. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the spice and authenticity of the pepper. The nose and the flavoring showed uncanny raw, real flavoring. There was a nice malt backing to hold up to the spice, and the froth and sting of the heat kept you coming back for more. By far the best chili beer we’ve ever had, and a damn good beer across all categories.

Very light beer of some sort with a nice white cap of foam. Light body but heavy on the peppers. Actually quite a nice taste of jalapeno. I don't taste anything much else. Hot enough to put it down after a couple of sips, but it's certainly interesting. Not much aroma. Not much anything else but maybe some wheat. This might be drinkable if they tried moderately hot green chiles instead of the nacho flamers. OK, I admit I miss the point of this except maybe to soak your cheap chuck steak in it.

They have brought this back for fall, having won, amazingly, a bronze at 2010 GABF for Herb and Spice or Chocolate Beer. On tap at the Linkery for SD Beer Week.
