Poured into a tulip glass at the Blind Tiger.

Mad River's oak aged wee heavy pours a very dark brown, stopping just short of black. Some faint mahogany highlights are also present. There's roughly a finger of khaki colored foam crowning the beer, and it shows a bit of staying power. Lacing is very spotty though. The nose features notes of toffee and fig, with woody oak aromas providing a strong secondary character. The flavor starts off with that same malt and ester interplay from the nose. The fig fruitiness is probably a bit more subtle here though. The back end is all barrel though, with plenty of straight oak taking on a certain spicy quality. I'd be willing to guess this was aged in Hungarian, rather than French oak. I just wish the base beer shined through a little more as compared to the wood aging. The body is definitely chewy, and the carbonation on the low end of the spectrum, as they should be. Maybe a little too much so though as the beer comes off as syrupy at times. Mad River's oak aged wee heavy is an alright sipper of a beer, but my first offering from this brewery didn't blow me away either.

This beer was served from the tap at The Blind Tiger in New York, NY. It arrived in a generic tulip glass, glowing a dark chocolate brown coloring. A one finger head of latte colored bubbles was noted atop the beer. This showed nice retention, leaving bits of sticky lacing across the walls of the glass. A thick haze was noted, but without sediment, while carbonation appeared average. The nose sang with sweeter roasted malts, blueberry, fig, molasses and lactic sourness. Our first impression was that pineapple and general fruitiness, and nuttiness, were both prominent throughout the tasting. As we sipped, pineapple sweetness, sweeter grain, coconut, molasses cooked with grain, and booze started things off. The middle peaked with big bourbon warmth, wood, buttery diacetyls, and a light earthy grassiness. The finish was with more smooth bourbon and oak, all through a sweet caramel air. The aftertaste breathed of rich molasses, peppery booze, souring grain, or more of that glorious oaky woodiness. The body was full and syrupy, while the carbonation was medium. Each sip was very frothy, with great slurp, sip, and cream. The beer was thoroughly warming, as well. The mouth was coated in froth, keeping it wet between sips. The abv was big, and the beer sipped.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the flavoring. This showed huge complexity through the bourbon, fruit, wood, and general robustness of all the elements. The malty sweetness and big booze certainly make you take your time. The nose was comparatively weak, especially on the bourbon front, but this is a stand up beer for the style.
