Meet Cannonball’s big brother; we used more malt, more hops and more magical conjuring to crank up the flavour of our explosive IPA ‘Cannonball’. Get your taste buds ready for massive pine and candied orange aromas combined with bitter/sweet grapefruit and mango flavours all complemented by a deeply composed, satisfyingly malty base. Ever wondered what it feels like to be shot out of a cannon? Here’s what it tastes like.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2012 (batch 2835). Acquired from my local beer specialist. Ever wondered what it tastes like to be shot out of a cannon?
Poured into a Delirium chalice. A clear coppery-amber hue with low carbonation. Yields a small head of white foam that disappears swiftly. Aroma of fruity aromatic hops and caramel malt. Plentiful notes of citrus, tropical fruit and mild pine, along with a subtle hint of grain.
Tastes of caramel malt with an intense aromatic hop character and a strident bitter finish. Notes of tropical fruit, grapefruit, citrus and pine. A powerful, spicy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and has decent body, but too flat and under-carbonated. Highly astringent; dries the palate. Aftertaste of intensely bitter aromatic hops and caramel malt.
A reasonable DIPA, but falls short of the best. The lack of carbonation is the biggest flaw, as it impacts on the mouthfeel and probably the flavour as well. Plenty of aromatic hops and bitterness, with a decent malt backbone, but doesn't have the depth to make it stand out from the crowd. It's great to see small UK breweries taking on big US styles, but if I had to make one recommendation I'd say this needs to be bottle-conditioned. Worth sampling, but Human Cannonball is not at it's best in bottled form.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Cloudy dark orange colour, large off-white head. Aroma of citrus fruit (esp. oranges) and pine. Luscious hoppy flavour, with notes of bitter orange marmalade, grapefruit, mango and resin. In other words: Lots of hoppy flavours in addition to the expected solid bitterness, which is still not too extreme. A wonderful beer!

Hazy golden Orange pour into a Spiegelau glass. One finger of off-white head with a fairly aggressive pour, which dissipates fairly quickly. Lemon and Orange peel on the nose, complimented by tangerine, peach and a touch of pine and hop resins. There's some candied fruit in there, too.
The taste begins with orange and lemon zest, with sweet tangerines and sugar-sprinkled grapefruit. The resinous hops begin to take over alongside pine needles. Good, sharp bitterness that lingers on the tongue. The finish is fairly dank and earthy; a journey through fresh, young pine to an old deciduous woodland (...I know - sounds odd, but that's the feeling I get).
Lovely mouth-feel. Very smooth and extremely easy drinking for a 9.2% ABV beer.
A cracking beer overall. I'm tempted to score this even higher, but I'm saving the top marks until I've tried the double IPAs from the likes of Russian River, Treehouse, Trillium etc.

500ml can served in my Spiegelau IPA glass. 04/08/17 printed on the case of the can. Pours a dull, burnished orange with a hazy clarity and a fizzy, quarter inch, off-white head that sizzles and pops and quickly disperses. Nose expresses citrus rind, a hint of candied sweetness and light malts. Taste consistent with nose; however, malt profile and candied quality is much more assertive. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a brisk carbonation and a mild acidity. Overall, a decent DIPA somewhat reminiscent of a throwback DIPA from about 10 years ago.

It starts very strong in the mouth, but the aftertaste is pleasant. It is not too bitter, but the malt backbone is difficult to perceive and basically sweetness. When it heats the flavor becomes a bit artificial, like chewing hops pellets.
Detected aromas: resines, grassy elements, grapefruit, a bit of citrus. Resins are dominant, but the profile is not flat.
The 500ml can becomes far too long for a beer that has delivered everything in the first 250.

From Zombier. In Teku glass. Watching Los Soprano 6x20. First it reminds a neipa, refreshing, very juicy and without high bitterness. As you progress in the can, its becomes much more bitter

CAN
Rimming off white film over turbid dirty blonde. 4
Peach, herb, lemon zest and tangerine compote. 4
Touch of saltines, pile of citrus oil, some tangerine, nettle oil sting, pine needle, big hit of pineapple and more juicy limeade. 4.5
Lt-med, oily, smooth. 4
Centennial, Citra, Columbus, Magnum
Loads of fresh-squeezed citrus, but also lots of oil, too - lots going on. No IBUs, together with the body, puts this in Vermont territory with a lot more success than anything from Northern Monk. No heat at a scary 9.2% is yet another trick, so this had to count as a big winner. Magic Rock’s best + near the top for UK DIPA. 4.25
