on tap at the brewery - served in taster

Pours an opaque darkness with a thinner layer of beige head. Coating of film rests on top, leaving a few spots of lacing.

Spices and apples in the nose with pears and dark fruit. Burnt sugar, bread crust, Belgian yeast, alcohol warmth.

Sweet and spicy up front with cinnamon, coriander and apples. Pears, raisins and dates with some burnt sugar sweetness. Full malty backbone with dark fruits and boozy warmth.

Fuller medium body, well carbonated, sticky and full on the tongue. This is decent, but the apples seem to overpower some of the more delicate flavors.

From 11/21/12 notes. Picked this up in Middletown, NY at Whole Foods about a month ago but wanted to wait to open it with my sister. 750ml bottle poured into a Chimay chalice.

a - Pours a deep reddish brown color with one finger of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of apples, fruity malts, cinnamon, spices, gingerbread, pumpkin, Belgian yeast, cloves, bready malts, and toasted malts. Lots of apples and fruit to it, as well as spice. Was surprised to get a little pumpkin-ale type flavors to it, but the nose is pretty nice.

t - Tastes of apples, fruity malts, alcohol, apple brandy, spices, Belgian yeast, cloves, bready malts, toasted malts, cinnamon. Taste has more apples and more alcohol than the nose. Still quite nice, thought not quite as good as the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Very light heat in the taste.

o - Overall a pretty interesting and good local fall beer. You can definitely smell and taste the apple cider used, and it has a lot of fruit and spices to it. Some light alcohol in the taste but nothing too bad. Would buy it again next year.

Poured into an Arrogant Bastard pint glass. Nearly opaque and murky dark brown body with ruby highlights, initially topped with a voluminous sand-colored head that quickly subsides into a very thin layer. Lacing forms decent rings, in light of the ABV.

Dark fruit confronts the nose, with apple lurking under, and a light Autumn-profile spicing. Bread notes emerge as it warms, and apple becomes more prominent.

Medium body and an above-average champagne-like fine carbonation greets the tongue. Dark raisin and stewed plum, toasted bread, Belgian yeast, and moderate clove phenol, with a slight apple tartness make an interesting flavor combination. Finish is somewhat lackluster; just a memory of a sweet dark fruit.

Alcohol is hidden very well, and it's very easy to drink, though a bit on the sweet side, and the clove phenols are a little too strong relative to the rest of the palate. New Jersey apples are awesome and definitely make a difference here. There's room for improvement to that next, mindblowing level, and knowing that it's so close makes it a little disappointing in that respect.

750 mL bottle thanks to NJBeerNerd. It was allowed to warm a bit before being poured into my NEBCO tulip.

Kane Malus pours a very dark brown, with a scattering of ruby highlights present. Three plus fingers of khaki colored foam rises up and threatens to topple over the lip of the glass. Once the initial rush subsides though, the head disappears quickly and there's not much in the way of lacing left behind. The nose has a bit of raisin to it, but that blends in to an apple note. The spice aroma has a bit of clove and a bit of whatever Kane spiced this beer with, I'm guessing some allspice among others. I like how the incorporation of apple cider plays out in the flavor, some of the traditional dark fruits of a BSDA are replaced by a musty apple taste. Phenols are again present on the back end, with the clove augmented by the spicing. The spices aren't quite pumpkin ale level intense, but they're a little too heavy handed for this beer in my opinion. They do play off the apple cider nicely though and give the brew a very authentic autumn feeling to it. The body is just a touch too sturdy for me, though I'm not surprised to see that it was bottle conditioned with champagne yeast given the wonderfully spry carbonation. I had very high expectations for Malus based on the other Kane beers I've had, and it didn't quite live up. Still, with some refining I think there's some real potential in this brew and it's good to see these guys bottling.

Pours an extra dark brown color with a small light beige head.

Aromas begin with apple cider, Belgian yeast and brown sugar. As it warms you get some nuttiness and brown bread.

The tastes begin toasted bread, Belgian yeast spice, toasted bready and nutty malt. The apple comes in in the backend after the caramelized malt flavors. Apple works decently well with the dark fruit flavors.

The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with medium carbonation. Finish is lightly sweet with a bit of emerging alcohol.

Overall this is an intersting beer to sample but not something I would want to drink in large quantities. The apple cider makes an already sweet beer a little sweeter to the point of almost being a bit too much.

A: The beer is hazy dark brown in color. It poured with a finger and a half high dark beige head with some darker yeast particles on the bubbles. This quickly died down but consistently left a thin head covering the surface.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of dark fruits and apples in the nose along with some hints of cinnamon.
T: Similar to the taste, the smell has flavors of dark fruits and apples along with some notes of Belgian yeast. There are also lingering hints of spices in the finish.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied and a little smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: It seems that this beer could use a heavier body to accentuate the interesting mix of flavors in the taste.

A: Pours a cloudy dark reddish brown in color with some garnet red highlights and light amounts of gentle visible carbonation near the surface. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy beige head that slowly reduces to a thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Strong aroma of dark fruits (plum) with the addition of apple as well. There are light amounts of spices including cinnamon and clove.

T: Similar to the smell but even more intense - strong flavors of dark fruits and apple. There are some lighter notes of the flavors of spices including cinnamon and clove. Very light amounts of Belgian yeast flavors.

M: Medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: Easy to drink as the alcohol is very well hidden (considering this beer is 9.5% ABV). A good offering from a new (at least to me and in bottles) NJ brewery. Nice complexity to the flavors and smell. I appreciate the addition of the apple cider.
