The cage on this is wound really tight and as I'm fighting with that it gets loose enough that the cork is able to explode off the top of the bottle and hints me on the side of the head. WTF! I still can't find the cork, or maybe I have a concussion. Seriously at fridge temp it came off like a champagne cork. I poured this quickly because I was afraid of the mess it was going to make, but surprisingly most of the carbonation stayed in suspension, I'm thankful I opened this right out of the fridge. Pours a solid slightly hazy dark brown with a huge foamy tan head that takes forever to recede and leaves some stickies on the sides of the glass. The aroma is sweet and fruity with a roasty edge to it. Lots of plums cherries and raisins with a fair amount of caramel and brown sugar and a hint of coffee and chocolate. Spicy yeasty esters remind us that this is a Belgian inspired brew. The flavor follows the aroma quite well, but adds a bit of oxidation and a hint of ash to the mix. Medium to thick body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a sweet bubbly mouthfeel. Not a bad tasting brew. Its obviously way over carbonated which affects the mouthfeel, and based on the residual sweetness I can only see that getting worse. Thanks to Alex M for giving me the opportunity to be impaled by cork ;)

Bottle pour at the pre-FWIBF bottle share held at the Adelaide Inn in Paso Robles, CA.

2012 vintage.

Pours a murky reddish-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, dark fruit, brown sugar, and slight bourbon aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour malt, dark fruit, and brown sugar flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a slight sourness all around that isn't bad if it wasn't intended.

From 07/23/13 notes. Picked this up back in October at the Whole Foods in Middletown, NJ. After hearing horror stories of Kane beers popping on their own and being gysers, I popped this in the fridge and opened it rather than hold on to it. 750ml bottle poured into my Bruery tulip. Huge pop from the cork, but I had a glass ready and didn't seem to be a gusher at all.

a - Pours a deep brown, almost black color, with tons of tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Loads of head and retention, and lacing left on the glass.

s - Smells of sweet dark fruits, roasted malts, molasses, sugar, chocolate, oak, toasted malts, fruity malts, plums, and figs. Tons of dark fruits and sweet, with some nice roasted notes. No bourbon in the nose; seems very much like a Belgian dark ale.

t - Tastes sweet plums, raisins, figs, sweet dark fruits, roasted malts, bitter chocolate, toasted malts, burnt malts, light oak, and veyr light bourbon. Bourbon is there a little bit unlike the nose, but barley. Again, just like a Belgian dark ale.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. No heat to it at all which is nice.

o - Overall a nice beer, though the Belgian dark ale dominates the BA stout portion. Not a big deal as the Belgian dark ale is nice, with tons of sweet dark fruits and roasted notes throughout, but if they want to make this a more interesting beer and have the bourbon and stout come through more, they need to revisit the blend and %'s. Worth checking out, especially if you like Belgian beers, would try it again.

750ml bottle from FreeBridge.

After the geyser adventure on the Fourth with Night to End All Dawns, I learned. I cut the cage off this bottle in the sink, and was ready when the cork popped and hit me in the chest. Lost only a few sips to the sink, and poured out the first cup of foam into a tulip.

The body is perfectly black, capped by three fingers of medium tan dense foam.

Aroma is dark fruits and licorice. Some candy sugar in the background.

Taste follows the aroma. Dark fruits. Licorice. Candy sugar. Then some Belgian chocolate. Deep roast coffee. Warming alcohol in the belly.

Rich slick smooth as silk mouthfeel.

Another terrific beer from Kane. Now if they could just fix things so I decided when the corks came out of their bottles.

Thanks to dfclav for sending me this in a big random box of goodies for another essentially. Shared with rudzud and others.

Decent fizzy head rises quickly and fades quickly, just about pitch black beer.

Nose had a slight infection sour or possibly just a very acrid roast mineral character, then dark malts, some roast and super dark malts, bit of roast, char, faint hint of bourbon barrel.

Taste starts rich with dark malts, little creamy, light choc and roast, fluffy, earthy char, bitter roast and light barrel char, hint of bourbon barrel, super dark choc and creamy choc. Some Belgian dark stout flavours too. Finish is sticky sweet and syrupy, light booze and bitter dark choc lingering.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, nice carb, hint of booze.

Overall not bad, but not super special, nice dark malts and Belgian dark malts, faint barrel notes, interesting beer
