on tap at the brewery

Pours a lightly hazed dark golden color with a bright orange hue. Crop of white head slowly fades out into a collar of film with spotty lacing on the glass.

Citric hoppiness in the nose with orange and grapefruit. Hints of pineapple with a splash of rye spice and toasted bread. Light malty presence, soft warmth.

Bite of grapefruit and rye spiciness right up front. Orange peel and hops with a mild malt backbone. Kiss of caramel sweetness, bread crust and toasted grain. Finishes bitter and dry with lingering rye and grapefruit.

Medium body, decent carbonation, sticky and dry on the tongue. This essentially takes the delicious West coast flavors from their flagship IPA and adds a delicious rye punch. I hope they make more of this soon.

Growler, poured into a snifter

Pours a slightly dull orange through the core with some brighter shades through the outer layers. A creamy off-white cap rises and falls slowly. Some mild lacing left behind.

The nose is ultra juicy. Bright ruby red grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, mangoes, and papaya with clean malt and a hearty dose of rye.

Bold, juicy hops burst onto the palate. Bitter ruby red grapefruit, oranges, mangoes, and papaya right off the bat with a long lingering bitterness through the finish. A burst of sweet juicy fruit end palate helps to balance some of the bitterness. The rye comes out more so in the finish, with lingering dry earthy tones.

Medium bodied with compact, but explosive flavor. Smooth feel, slightly oily in spots. Big lingering bitterness that builds with each sip.

I am a huge fan of rye IPA's and this beer is pretty awesome. Huge juicy, bitter hop profile with a good dose of rye to dry everything out and enhance the bitterness.

64 oz growler filled at the brewery two days ago. Poured into my NEBCO 668 tulip.

Rye Head High pours very hazy, and the hue is somewhere between tangerine and goldenrod. Each pour yields between a finger and a finger and a half's worth of white foam atop the beer. Head retention is solid, and rings of lacing are left around the glass. The nose has loads of citrus, buoyed by just a little bit of a tropical fruit aroma. A familiar spicy rye note is also present, though clearly in a supporting role. Just wonderfully aromatic all the way around. There's a very little bit of biscuit maltiness upfront, before the earthy, peppery rye quickly comes in. A fairly aggressive flash of bitterness leads to a grapefruit and pineapple finish. The rye is a little bit more prominent than in the nose, and the hops a little bit less so, which doesn't necessarily work to the beer's advantage. The body is very dry, and the carbonation has held up well or being a growler for a couple days. The mouthfeel is well suited for highlighting the hop and rye characteristics. Kane's regular Head High is a great beer, and this rye infused twist turns out just as well.
