a dark black pour with 2 fingers of brown head, slow dissipation and nice lacing. chocolate aromas followed by oak/vanilla/bourbon, coffee notes, brown sugar, raisins. WOW. a very strong bourbon feel, but so well mixed in with the sweetness of the malt and the rough dark notes of the roasted grain bill that this works perfectly together! a sweet chocolatey subtle base with tons of charred oak, roasted grains, lots of bourbon and a slight feel of sugary maple. this beer is FANTASTIC.
full body with moderate carbonation (the bottle was a gusher), doesn't coat the tongue as much as most other RIS would, making it a VERY easy to drink stout. though there is a lot of bourbon in the flavor, the alcohol bite is well hidden.

this is kane's best beer i've tried so far. some will dispute, but alas it is just my opinion and i have not had a few of their releases that have been talked up just yet (BBA MORNING BELL being the main one). i'm a bit bummed out that when i got this, i was talked out of even bothering to look for a second one for my friend in WI, due to the brewery warning the beer shop i frequent (and have friends working there) that there were a lot of bottles exploding at the brewery - it would have been a dumb mistake to ship it out (especially with the weird temperatures we were getting at the time). oh well, this next glass is for you buddy - at least i scored you a bottle of morning bell ;)

Picked up at the ANTEAD release day at the brewery 5/3.

Poured from a black waxed top 750 mL bottle into a Kane teku also picked up Saturday. Interesting they ditched the cork and cage for the first time in this release. I recall last year's release was quite thin and unbalanced, curious to try this year's.

Pours jet black. No light getting through this one. Aggressive pour straight down into the teku yields a 2 finger light brown head. Head dissipates rather quickly to a thin film around the top.

First whiff: bourbon. This one puts the barrel first and foremost. Chocolate is the 2nd most evident smell in this even though this is the plain variant. I can see how the cacao beans would set that flavor off.

The creamy mouthfeel is a great improvement over last year's batch. Thick but not as chewy as you could find. For a BB imperial stout, it's sitting around 6 or 7 in the thickness department. Enjoying it thoroughly.

Bourbon is at the forefront of taste as the nose would suspect. This thing is BCBS jr. For a stout nearing 13% it is dangerous. Tasty stout with no heat whatsoever. If you can snag a bottle somehow, I would jump at the chance. Very excited to try the variants.;

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black but not inky. Sizable khaki head. Medium collar. Nice surface wisps.

Smell - Whiskey, booze, caramel, some chocolate roast. Yeasty, strangely.

Taste - Chocolatey. Boozy. Caramel. Whiskey is decent here. Vanilla. Really boozy, but the other flavors are equally strong.

Mouthfeel - Very boozy. High carbonation.

Overall - I'm torn on this one. Tough to tell if it's just too big or if the flavors aren't complete.

There is a lot going on with this beer. Popped the cork on bottle and fizzed up like a champagne although it poured with minimal head, and jet black. The smell was a bit of a turn off. It was a musty oak smell that had some bourbon tones early but faded quickly. Luckily the beer didn't taste musty but there was more oak than bourbon present. It is a very smooth beer with some interesting flavors. As the beer warmed it didn't get better like a world class bourbon barrel beer should in my opinion. Overall, I did like the uniqueness of this beer but it was better in the first few sips than the last few. I might try another soon and age one to see if there is any differences. I'd buy it if you can find it. Pretty good but not great.
