In a town overrun with package stores, this is the new kid on the block. Arbor Place used to be the place to go for a good selection of craft / import beer until they jacked up their prices and fired the beer manager. Now it looks as if nobody that works there cares about the beer section.
I had heard months ago that Mike's was opening and was hoping they could take over where Arbor Place left off. When I visited them last week, I was very pleased with what I saw / heard. As I entered the store I noticed an employee talking to a sales rep. After a few moments i realized they were putting together a beer order. Being nosey, I listened into the conversation for a couple of minutes before checking out the beer section. Once in the beer section I noticed that, while small, the craft beer selection was quite good for the area. Selections from Dogfish, Bell's, Victory, Left Hand, and He'Brew (just to name a few) filled two doors. I was happy to see seasonals that even Arbor Place was not carrying (Victory Summer Love just to name one) and the prices KILLED those at Arbor Place. Many 6-packs were $1 to $2 cheaper... In this economy, that makes a huge difference. In speaking to the manager, Henry, he stated that they started out with a small section and are asking craft beer buyers what other selections they would like to see. In fact, he showed me a large list of approximately 4 pages from one customer that stated she would no longer shop at Arbor. I gave him a few suggestions and made my purchase.
All in all, a GREAT looking, clean store with very attenetive employees and the building blocks of a good craft beer store.
