Pilsener Haus & Biergarten, Hoboken, NJ

Biggest downfall: all of the families with kids and smaller children in baby prams on weekend afternoons - brunch was made for nursing hangovers or enjoying an early start, not as an excuse for young parents to sneak away for a nip.
Biggest upside: great beer selection. Beers I've never seen nor heard of. Quality. Freshness.

Worst other: crowded on weekend night; hipsters. Still, always able to get a beer.
Best other: fresh grilled brats. Pretzels.

Price: well what do you expect? Yet, not bad in comparison. Final answer: value.

Decor: a touch cold, but unique and interesting. Outdoor seating is a big bonus in season.

Overall: not to be missed! And if you question that, please visit the Zeppelin Hall in Jersey City to get your head screwed on straight.

This place is great! The food is excellent, and the beer is just as good! Imported German beers like Weihenstephaner! They always have great promos going on, and great live music! If you live in the Northern NJ/NYC area this place is definitely worth the trip!

The Pilsener Haus is probably my favorite place to drink in Hoboken. They have a great German/Eastern European beer selection and you can get a 1 liter glass of almost everything. It's kind of limited on American craft beer, but hey, that's not the theme of the place. There's a sausage grill open all the time, which is great in itself, but the regular menu has a lot of quality food on it too. The atmosphere is really relaxing, lots of open space, all long tables, and good music that isn't the top 10 pop songs on repeat. It's a hike from the main drag, but definitely worth the walk.

Awesome location! Right in the heart of Hoboken although no view of the NYC skyline. However, big outdoor spaces with long table great for socializing & meeting your neighbor. Had the Paprikash Chicken which was very good (spaetzel was yummy) and a couple of the house beers. Only negative may be that you have to go inside to order items off the backside of the menu (burgers and such). Good German beer options as well (Spaten, Hacker Pschorr, etc.). If it's nice out and you want the feel of being in Deutschland - go here!

Awesome huge renovated ware house in uptown Hoboken; pain in the butt to get to because it's so far uptown. Numerous rooms, plus outside area. Multiple places to get beer and food either self-service or via the wait staff which are friendly on the eyes to say the least.

Food was very above average for a biergarden. Pretzels were awesome. Got a bunch of other sampling apps like sausage, pate, pickles, krat, brats. All were really above average and exceeded my expectations.

Selection of beers is semi-weak but authentic. 90% standard German beers that are decent but really not amazing. Lagers and Pilsners galore... Prices are better than the Jersey City Biergarden as far as the beer goes.

I have visited this place a couple of times and have been pleased with each visit. The atmosphere is very much what one would expect in a German beer garden - it has both indoor and outdoor seating at long shared tables.

They have a pretty good selection of beers (approximately 20 taps) - most are German, Austrian, or Czech. Beers are served in the full liter as well as the half liter and the prices are in line with other bars in the area. After visiting a couple of other beer halls in the area, I was pleased that they always seem to serve the beer in the proper glasses and do not revert to plastic cups even during busy times like Ocktoberfest. There are also some pretty interesting bottles when I have visited as well.

The food is really good with a brunch as well as lunch/dinner menu and a grill. The food is typical German though very well executed.

Also, they have a pretty decent house beer which I do not see here on BA but will add it once I do a proper review.

Now I've been here a bunch and I have really come to like this place. Food is authentic German cuisine, very well done. Monday night football is shown on a large projection screen with 1/2 liters of the house beer for 4 bucks and a full liter for 13 that comes with a pile of decent chicken wings. Also not too crowded for a change, we could actually have a conversation for a change. These are my previous thoughts:

Ok, this is a do over on my original review after I returned and had a much nicer second experience. It's a beer garden in Hoboken, so it has more than a touch of the "nightlife" scene you'd find in that town, but it's not too terrible overall despite a bit of douchebaggery here and there. It's a nice looking place with a huge central room with the long bar, kitchen, and a grill station in the back. The first time I came an oompah band was playing here; the other night they pulled down the big projection screen and showed the 7th game of the world series. There's also a side room for slightly quieter drinking and a nice outdoor area with heat lamps to keep you warm(ish).

I found the staff to be friendlier on my 2nd visit. The first time I couldn't stand the bartender:

The bartender was sour faced and unhelpful AND unfriendly AND neither of us could hear each other. He gave crap pours and held my credit card assuming I wanted to run an open tab, forcing me to wait around and get his attention again in order to get it back.

This yutz was working again but I fortunately was served by someone else who was much cooler. Later in the evening we got waitress service from a friendly and attractive girl in leiderhosen. We ordered the 11.00 pretzels which were worth it....enormous, hot, with liptauer cheese dip; easily the best pretzel I have ever had.

Beer selection is pretty good, typical German stuff on draft for 7 bucks per half liter; pitcher prices are better...monday nights if you order 2 pitchers you get a huge pile of wings for free apparently. Might have to make this a spot for Monday night football. Good bottle selection of american and international craft beers that are little bit more expensive. You can get a FW Double Jack here though if you like, which is pretty sweet. Beer and food menus are available online too. Still haven't tried the house pilsener; I did like that they had Ramstein Ocktoberfest on tap. Plus Weihenstephener original!

Worth checking out if you dig the beer garden experience. It certainly ain't a place to do your quiet drinking though.
