750 ml bottle, number 06836-13. Pours dark brown black with a medium creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is vanilla oak and some grainy roast and black licorice.

The flavor is heavy roast, some sweet lactic vanilla and black licorice with some alcohol in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a bit watery.

Overall, an OK but pricey imperial stout.

Opens with a faint pop. Pours a very effervescent ebony with 3+ fingers of mocha colored head. Decent lacing, pretty good head retention & nice viscosity

S: Black currant, hints of baker's chocolate & red grapes

T: Baker's chocolate, raisins & black currant, plus red grapes up front & quite a bit of oaky dryness. Slight boozey fig notes as this warms, along with a touch of iron & Baker's chocolate as this warms, faint coffee notes as well & a touch of raisin. Finishes dry, figgy, oaky & with just a bit of coffee & bit more red grape, maybe even a bit of Concord

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, nice silkiness too

Pretty good, as others have raised their prices, these Woodcuts don't seem so dear. I will probably some of #8 unless it it's a strange one... No mention of grapes, but this screams out loud to me, very true to style. A sipper to be sure, very complex

Bottle # 00148 - 13

A - Pours a black body, but doesn't seem too thick. It develops a one finger dark khaki head that sticks around and has great lacing.

S - Good amount of fresh oak that really cuts through the roasted malts and dark fruits. A bit of coffee and licorice as well.

T - Dark chocolate intertwined with fresh oak. Roasted malts come off a bit sweet, there's some vanilla and some licorice to boot.

M - Medium to full bodied and a low carbonation that's really tight. Creamy and easy drinking. Minimal alcohol burn.

O - It's legit on the fresh oak and does not back down from it. I wish it was dialed back a little bit, but nothing wrong with going full boar.

Big thanks to blue_bleeder for the bottle.

Appearance: Black with some dark brown at the edges when held to direct light. Head is dark khaki/tan, creamy, and thick. Moderate retention keeps a small cap and collar for the duration. Spotty lacing. Carbonation is higher than expected.

Smell: Oak and then some. Fresh and woody. Vague sort of dark fruit with a toasted backing note. Sort of nutty, but not a particular nut. Dark fruit with some fig, plum, and dark cherry. Some cocoa dusting with some deep rich malt. Dark, slightly charred and burnt malt. Chewy and sweet. Roasted malt sweetness as well. Nice malt depth, but not overly complex or cloying. Lots of cocoa. Some licorice.

Taste: Chocolate chips and oak shards. Cocoa, bitter chocolate and some mild creamy milk chocolate. Deeply roasted with a solid punch of caramelized malt sweetness. A touch burnt with some char layered in the back. A ton of oak, but it's tempered by a big chewy malt sweetness. A bunch of dark fruit, cherry and fig mostly. So much wood and cocoa. Burnt malts ramp up a bit as it warms. Almost brownie like finish. Some vanilla and a bit of a nutty finish. Warming makes it a bit too oaky.

Mouthfeel: Creamy medium leaning to full body. Smooth with a moderate carbonation. On point.

Overall: Press it again.

A nice RIS. Oak could dial back a bit, but everything else is solid.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this

Appearance: Dark, dark brown, decidedly black from a distance - unexpected levels of carbonation, cork exploded with a huge pop, poured with a large, foamy head - keeps an impressive cap, leaves streets and sheets of lacing

Smell: So, so much wood - there are some big malts here, but the wood is so potent that it really shines through - fresh, ripe wood, so much oak that it kind of imparts some fruit - dark chocolate, chocolate malts, baker's chocolate - some roasty malts, a hint of coffee grounds - some vanilla and some dark fruits

Taste: Burly malts and fresh wood - creamy dark chocolate - bitter, dark chocolate with some hints of cocoa - chocolate malts and some caramel, roasty malts - some malt sweetness - vanilla, dark fruit, and some fruity esters from the wood - big, big oak - very, very woody, with fresh-cut wood flavor - impressively minimal alcohol - wood really becomes a bit much as this warms up

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body, remarkably smooth and creamy, great carbonation

Overall: A solid cut

The oak-aging here is very interesting. The oak flavors are more reminiscent of an oak-aged wild, or maybe an oak-aged IPA. It's a very fresh wood. The RIS at the base is good. It may be on the light side, or maybe that's the interaction with the wood. Regardless, this is worth a try.
