My contribution to a barley wine bottle share on 1/31. Pricey, but worth it for a special occasion. Super smooth and velvety, lots of wood accents on top of the malts and mild hoppiness. Get it for a special event and enjoy.

Pours copper with a large beige head. This one was in the refrigerator for a long time. Has a sweet aroma with caramel, vanilla, oak, and brown sugar, Tastes like it smells. Very sweet with a somewhat bitter finish. Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. I wish there were more Barleywines made today and fewer NE IPA, but that's just my opinion.

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep mahogany beer which is topped by a dense and slightly rocky finger of tan head which retains well and leaves some lacing
S: Smells of sweet caramel, vanilla, oak, and some faded hops
T: Taste is caramel, vanilla, slightly bitter faded hops, hint of pine resin, and some nice oak. On the swallow there's some pleasant faded bitter hops, a slight tea like flavors, caramel, vanilla, and oak.
M: This beer is fairly full in body with a slightly creamy feel on the palate. Carbonation is soft and slightly effervescent while the beer has a drying finish which is expected for the style.
O: Overall this is a really solid beer that has held up well over time. The flavors are well integrated and play well together and the beer has a really nice amount of complexity. The beer also doesn't show any off flavors from 5-6 years in the bottle which is pretty impressive. This one is drinking pretty well right now if you're still sitting on one.

Almost 6 years old. Pretty damn good, and I'm not a big fan of barleywines. I wish I'd gotten to it sooner so as to get a little more hop character but still, well done, Odell.

I'm not usually a big barleywine guy, but since Odell made one, I thought it would be worth a shot. Great flavor and aroma, though the bottle I bought had a lot of sediment in it. I know I had one sitting around for a long time before finally opening it, but I didn't expect that much to accumulate in the bottom. Went great with a hearty beef stew though, that's for sure. I wonder how it would have been if opened closer to bottling date, but that's half the fun of aging a beer anyway, right?

Oaky. Would have been better in bourbon barrels. Definitely not worth the price.

Caramel, toffee, dark fruits, oak, and vanilla.

Good, just not $20 good. Way too basic.

super lucky to have had a buddy keep this in the back of his fridge since it was released a few years back and bring it over the other to share with me. i have to say, this is drinking perfectly right now, so if you are lucky enough to have one, let it rip! wow, this is incredible. not sure why i thought it was in bourbon, but it is in new oak, and the aroma and flavor of the wood is amazing. clear copper colored beer, a little thinner and a shade lighter than i expected. smells like fresh chopped oak, light barrel char, toasted almond and coconut, molasses and maple, vanilla and booze. its extraordinary in the aroma. the alcohol is just a little hot, i imagine this has mellowed significantly, but its still a bit hot. the oak is insane, its like drinking lumber, easily the woodiest beer i have seen in the series, pure white pine, home depot lumber yard status. there is some sugar here, but its not too sweet, the grain part is a little more simple than anticipated, but the flavor from the wood is understood better this way, and i can see it was designed to be this way on purpose. only a medium body, lots of toasted earth and nut, brown sugar as it finishes, vanilla of course, and just so much oak. carbonation is right there, even high for the style and age here. in the end this is one of my favorite of the woodcut beers so far, and as good as any barleywine in the world after a couple of years. has the series been discontinued? this is the latest i have seen and its old now. hopefully not, these beers have represented some of the best ever made in colorado, it would be a shame to cut it off. not sure if there are still bottle of this around or not, but if you see one, buy it!

Had this in my cellar for the last 12 months.
Poured into a snifter.
A – Pours a clear brownish red with 1 inch of foamy head.
S – The aroma is dark fruit and boozy.
T – The flavor is outstanding. There’s a lot of barrel, then boozy and quite a bit of sugary sweetness on the finish.
M – Mouth feel is a little bit sticky, the flavor hangs around for some time. Carbonation is medium.
O – I bought this hoping it would taste this good. This is a grown up, boozy beer. Might be even better a couple years down the road when the sweetness rounds off a bit.

Pours a lovely brownish-red with a dense and bubbly, long-lasting tan head with sheets of lacing left on the glass.
The aroma is malty sweet -- toffee and vanilla, with a little bit of dark fruit and leather.
Taste is toffee and caramel, a bit of vanilla and a touch of raisin. A bit of bitterness at the close. As it warms, a touch of leather comes through.
Mouthfeel is medium and smooth.
Excellent beer.

I have been looking forward to opening this $20 bottle, but I got a dud.Funky and Sour. I taste some bourbon barrel but this tastes nothing like a barley wine. More of a barrel aged sour - maybe my bottle got infected. Bummer

This overall was a good example of a BA American B Wine. It had the little hop youd expect from a American but you could still taste the malts. Seriously much better then BA Bigfoot. So if your looking for a American style B Wine give this a try.

Pours an attractive amber with a finger of cream-colored head that leaves moderate lacing and a thin haze of foam across the top surface of the liquid. Smells pleasantly complex but confusing--I get some light vanilla and brown sugar aromas, but they're subsumed by oak, lemongrass, orange pith, pepper, a saison-like funk, and roasted corn (not the buttery popcorn of diacetyl, but actual corn). The flavors are similarly disorienting, with the most prominent addition not noted on the nose being red jujube.

This does not hit the style of an American [nor English] barleywine, as there are too many completely uncharacteristic smells and tastes. Releasing those expectations, it is still quite an interesting experience, but for its price tag and low likelihood of encountering it on a shelf ever again, I'm not likely to pursue acquiring another bottle.
