Bridging the Baltic and Caribbean Seas, Jolly Russian is a rich Russian Imperial Stout stowed away in Rum Barrels for aging. Dark as night and thick as the raging sea, this brew boasts notes of coffee and cocoa with waves of oak, spiced molasses, dried fruit and vanilla from the planks. It’s dangerously delicious!

L: Pours a thick black color with a small tan head and no lacing on the glass.
S: Notes of rum followed by sweet molasses some roast chocolate and a touch of toffee and vanilla.
T: A strong rum, mixes with notes of strong rum, sweet molasses, a bit of roast chocolate, some caramel, boozy but not overly boozy.
F: Smooth cola like and large body.
O: This is a very nice Russian imperial stout.

4 plus years later and it is freaking delicious as ever. Strong barrel aromas, robust texture and smooth flavours. Rum is but a nuance in the profile and one would easily say it was a whisky barrel beer; technically is was before rum was in it. Smooth is the key word. Sip it slowly or it will be gone. Alone or with something like dark chocolate; goodness either way. One of the top beers of the category, for me.

Jolly Russian is another BA stout I was able to find from Odell. I picked up a 2017 bottle so this one had some age to it, creating a very smooth 13% ABV. There is a ton of dark rum in this beer. It is followed up with molasses and brown sugar sweetness.

12 ounce bottle. Pours black with a decent tan head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, vanilla, and rum. Taste is chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit, vanilla, and rum barrel. Nice.

Black in color with no penetration to the light. There’s a fingernail of brown around the rim and covering most of the top. The aroma is of light rum, plums, and black malt. I’m tasting a burst of light rum, plums, figs, black malt, and a bit of booze. The mouth is sticky, chewy, and warm with alcohol.
